Title: What computer OS do you use?
Post by: bwang on July 26, 2010, 01:38:05 am
Phew, I think I didn't miss anything big :)
So, what OS do you use?
I have various Ubuntus and Linux distros, with my netbook dualbooting 7.

XP for full-volume encryption, (since I can't find any decent encryption software for Linux) Lucid Pup embeded in XP via Oracle, and T(A)ILS (Live) for anonymous operations.

Why can't we choose several options in the poll? Many people dual/triple boot...
I use XP and Ubuntu (10.04) on the desktop and Vista on the laptop.

I was trying to change it to allow multiple votes, but I couldn't find the option.
If a staff member wishes to edit it for me, go ahead.

Perhaps you the poll could be changed so those of us who have more than one OS installed can list all of ours? ;D
I'll vote after that's done, but for now I'll say I have Windows 7 and Fedora 13 (both 64-bit)
Title: Re: What computer OS do you use?

I didn't imagine most calculator hobbyists use or experiment at least one Linux distro.
It must be because we all spent time searching/reading about technologies on the web.

And I my Windows 7 is in 64-bits. It is cool to find builds for 64-bits that bring noticeable speed ups, for example, desmume (best nintendo ds emulator out there but still a few games run slowly). 7-zip 64-bit also seems fast.
I haven't seen many compatibility problems related to 64-bit in Windows. There are some Linux OSes with 64-bit builds but I won't test that soon.

Vista on both desktop and laptop.
Why are Vista and 7 the same option?

Personally Vista kind of reminds me of TI-OS 2.53.  A lot of things that worked previously don't work now.

Vista on both desktop and laptop.

Personally Vista kind of reminds me of TI-OS 2.53.  A lot of things that worked previously don't work now.
This is the same thing that happens everytime a new OS comes out. A lot of Windows 95/98/2000 prog didn't work on XP for a long while and some still don't, and some 98/2000/XP/Vista programs won't run fine on all Windows 7 versions.

I dual boot 7 (x64) and XP (x64).
never use 7 though, I have it mostly in case I ever encounter something that doesn't like XP (hasn't happened so far except for nvidia's DX10 demo's)
Previously I used to have Fedora on it as well, but not for very long.

Back when I had an nVidia GPU, it wouldn't let me use the native resolution of my screen (not even with manual override). Now with an ATI it does (by changing the "maximum size").
But it still renders text ugly, no matter what I try to do about it. It also takes longer to boot. But the worst thing is, I don't have all my programs installed there. Sure I could fix that, but I have no reason to do so.

When this thread was first created, I used Windows XP and Windows 7. My taste in operating systems has since expanded. :P

My desktop and laptop both dualboot Fedora and Windows 7 (though the laptop has F15 and the desktop F14).

I also have an old netbook running Windows XP, which I recently installed Fuduntu on as well. (Fuduntu is a Fedora-derivative distro that's optimized for netbooks and laptops).

I used to have it on my netbook, but I didn't really like it, I like the normal desktop-style more ;)
And after I have upgraded my RAM, the normal Ubuntu is fast enough ;D

Seriously, you condensed all of the BSDs into one "BSD" option?  That's a bit unfair considering there isn't only a "Linux" option for all Linux distros.  Either take out all the distro choices for linux or add boxes for NetBSD, OpenBSD, FreeBSd, and DragonflyBSD.

He also put Arch a Crux together, Ubuntu and it's variants, Debian and it's variants. It's not that big of a deal the BSD variants are all together.

I use Windows 7 and on my old computer I use Windows XP SP2 (SP3 doesn't work properly on it so after trying it I did a system restore, since everything would just freeze all the time).

@Ashbad the original author of this thread isn't around anymore, so I doubt he can fix that. Given that only one single person voted for BSD, I doubt that would matter much, though.

Ok, it's a kind of long story how I came to use Ubuntu Netbook 9.10.

I used to have Ubuntu 10.10, but tried installing Vista, which failed horribly. I got a book from the library (Ubuntu up and running) that had a DVD with 5 versions of Ubuntu 9.10 on it (Ubuntu desktop, netbook, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Mythbuntu) I burnt the first four to CDs (used my dad's comp), and since the Vista install failed, I installed the Netbook remix 9.10 on my computer which happens to be a netbook.

I should upgrade.

The moral of this story is to never erase Linux to install Windows. Or install Windows at all. :P

I use Windows 7 for my home computer, and (I think) XP at school.

I'm considering dual-booting Linux Mint with my home computer though, once I upgrade some of its hardware so it's less slow.

Hrm, random question (before I forget) -- if I dual boot both a Linux OS and a Windows OS on the same computer, is there a way to set it up in a way that they can both share each others' files (like my papers for school and stuff, and code I'm writing).

You can access your Windows partitions with Linux, but not the other way round. Except if you have your Linux partitions ext2 formated, then you can use special drivers, but I don't tested this...

Cool, that pretty much takes care of all my reservations.

I have lots of files, plus I don't entirely trust the cloud.  I also don't have a dedicated server (I'm doing free shared hosting), and according to the terms of service, am not allowed to use them specifically to host files.

I use Win7 on my laptop and Xubuntu 11.04/Ubuntu (not a dual boot) on my netbook. I'm adding KDE4 to Xubuntu soon.

We use Window 7, because, Vista is too unstable (It completely destroyed itself, and shop couldn't fix), and windows XP is too old..

Better than my school; they have a cut-down version of XP.

5/14 options are linux, good times! Esp. When windows has only 3 :P

Linux FTW! Pure Debian is my main.

@Ikkerens Lucky! I wish my school used Fedora! I prefer Debian-base, but Fedora is fine too.

Hopefully soon I'll be able to say CP/M but that is all dependent on if my dad has enough free time to mess around on the old Osborn 1 with me sometime soon.

I use Win 7 about 90% of the time, although my main computer also has Ubuntu and Windows Vista (when you upgrade from Vista->7, it doesn't actually get rid of Vista from what I can tell)
Of the other three laptops I have that work, only one do I use - it has Ubuntu and XP, but I only use Ubuntu really. The other two are dual-boot Ubuntu/XP... I think. I haven't used them in aaagggeesss. (Like, haven't turned on in at least 4/5 years)

I myself fairly recently installed Gentoo and with some luck will soon entirely replace Fedora with it.
Anyone besides jkag (IIRC) and me use Gentoo?
Edit: Given that some options in the poll have only one vote, someone mind adding Gentoo to it?

I installed Gentoo on my computer but couldn't get it to work properly. Right now I'm using Fedora, Mint, and 7.
