Title: What should I do with this computer
Post by: ruler501 on May 31, 2012, 09:58:46 pm
My aunt gave me a new computer. It is a Pentium IV at 1.7ghz with 128mb RAM not sure what to do with it. It has a 37gb hard drive with 4gb used up by windows xp. before I saw the RAM I was thinking of running it with VNC so I could access my computer and files from wherever I was with internet, but then I went and looked at the RAM. Its disk drive is only for CD's says CD-ROM but I'm gonna try it with a CD-R in a bit to see if that would work. So what do you guys think I could do with this? I want something interesting/fun to do with it. I will be able to assure it continuous Internet(wired it seems to have two internet access ports according to windows as it shows two different network connection but I only see one on the back) access as of this weekend. It also came installed with Windows XP Proffesional.

CPU Pentium IV 1.7ghz
RAM 128mb
graphics rage 128 pro ultra gl agp (reports as 350mhz and 16 mb memory)
hard drive 37gb
OS Windows XP Professional

EDIT: Looking somemore this is the model of computer http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx240/en/ug/specs.htm

Specs I found said that it was SDRAM :(
Its not great but I'm sure it can do something interesting just not sure what to do with it yet

 I have a Pentium 3 computer with 512 MB SDRAM I think.
I'll check.

I'm getting another old computer soon, so if you live in the us and i am right about my ram, I'll send you 256MB.

not sure I'll have to open it up and check. I could probably go do that in a min

please do.

I have 2 256MB SDRam cards.
If I could get the stuff you can't use, then it would slow me down less.

When I ship it, and chance you need or want 2 128MB or 256MB Laptop ram (check type tomorrow) or a 40 gig laptop harddrive?  (appreciate if you would pay shipping on the latter)

I don't need the hard drive I have a 1tb external I can hook up if I want more space. for the RAM I'm pretty sure that will depend on how many slots I have open. I'll open it up and check tomorrow afternoon after my physical which should end around noon. I'm too tired today to move it to somehwere I'd feel safe opening it up(mainly away from the carpet its on right now).

can't you just turn it on to find out?
Ok, goodnight.

Either way, I'll send you the ram if you need it.  It'd be hard to buy it.  512MB cards of SDRam are $700 used at microcenter.  Its like a museum :P

Sure just give me a sec to figure out how to find out. and wow that is expensive thx a lot for this. If i need it I'll pm you my address. How could I get you the money for shipping?

The website with specs says that it uses sdram and can have up to 1gb so I'm pretty sure I will be able to use it.

EDIT: most sites I've looked at tell me to go to the manufacturers page to find out the type and the manufacturer says SDRAM so without openign it out thats the best I can do I think. If you know a better way to check the type without opening it please tell me

naa, 256MB isn't too expensive.  And it is impossible to find a buyer.
You can google it and find some 512 really cheap ($10 after shipping).  maybe its for show :P

nothing is hard to find cheap anymore, and its no trouble.  I'll pay for shipping, its small.

thanks I'll pm you my address tomorrow if I see there is room to add more. There should be though since the manufacturer page says max memory of 1 gb in what I'd guess would be 512mb chips

Any idea what I could do with this comp. I'm thinking maybe a file server/basic testing for web dev

web server and personal (online) storage?

Having my own computer as website let me transfer files to and from school easily.

Yeah you might want to make it a server, maybe even switch to Linux, but XP might do as well.

That's what I'm doing with a broken laptop with Linux on a external HD, it acts as a router (gets internet from wlan0, feeds it in eth0), a web server and a media center (plugged with HDMI on the 40" TV). Might do the same with a Pentium 4, prolly making it boot on a NFS share.

Thats what I was thinking especially since my school next year doesn't allow me to bring flash drives I have to use online storage for everything I want to bring with me to school.

And I need/want to learn web development so I'll probably practice with that too. If I can I'm also going to see if I can set it up with VNC so I can control it without having to plug it into a monitor(I only have 1 monitors and 2 desktops now) and because VNC would allow me to use my computer from school with sites like novnc.com

EDIT: just saw juju's post. I was going to install debian testing but i found out that it refuses to boot from dvd's I'm going to try with a CD tomorrow to see if it might be possible that way if not I'm not sure how I'll get linux on it. I doubt it can boot from usb and no images that i know of can fit on floppy.

Nice.
I suggest you play with Puppy linux or mint linux for now.

can you send a picture of your good computer workspace.
You might be able to make it smaller by removing a few unnecessary things for a server (such as cd drive), and make it an attachment to your computer area, like hang from wall :P

Then you can easily switch the moniter over

Arch Linux is my distro of choice, but if you're new to Linux, you might want Puppy or Mint first.

I personally like sabayon and LMDE though I may end up with puppy linux because of the lower level of hardware. I'm used to much nicer computers. I may also get an old laptop from very early 2000's(before usb became common) which has <100 mb of ram which I plan to run puppy on

EDIT: I've tried arch but never really liked it as much as I've liked other distros though I do like its multi-arch cd. I wish more distro's would do that. It would make it so much easier for me who has a 64 bit comp and a 32 bit comp

yeah i need  to reinstall lmde on this comp i really screwed it up a while back trying out the service pack 4 testing. so many broken packages I think i may have exited at some point during an install to mess it up that much

Yeah, really like the fact they put bpth x86 and x86_64 kernels in the same CD. Well, it would work for other distros if only the whole Live CD for only one arch wouldn't be more than half the CD (about 350MB). In Arch's case, a single arch's core CD fits in 370MB I think. Multiplied by 2, minus some files shared by both and you have a 670MB CD.

Well that computer is better than the laptop I just got. Windows ME, 4Gb harddisk and 64 Mb ram :P You can make a mame arcade with it :)

I might install puppy linux and try running mame. maybe add in a controller/joystick(I have one of each lying around) and see how well it does.

EDIT: after checking the computer it has two RAM ports and has 1 128mb SDRAM chip in it
