Title: Why are headphones so expensive now?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 25, 2013, 03:49:32 pm
Way back in 2004-07, I remember we could choose between about a dozen choice of standard headsets ranging from $10 to $30, with a few rarer higher end or wireless models from $49.99 to $99.99 (usually, the $99.99 ones were from Sears, and were available for $30 cheaper elsewhere). To get anything decent at such price, we didn't have to resort to the tiny earphones that keeps falling off our ears. Now since the last year or so, almost all headphones I see ranges from $100 to 300, and it is very hard to find anything that isn't earphones under $30 (as of now, for example, Target only had two, including the crappy $30 Sony ones with overly enhanced bass and that wire that always get stuck everywhere more than any other wire, and some $15 headset)! O.O

Could anyone explain why? I mean, most technologies should decrease in value over the years unless they become collector items, right? Plus it's not like headphones really got this much better within a 5 years span? ???

(I personally would never spend $300 on headphones, fully knowing that one of the speaker will stop working after 3 months.)

I don't know why either, it's really weird :/
And I don't think that speaker technology has really enhanced that much either, I have 10 year old computer speakers and a stereo from the 90's that both are better (or similar) quality to modern speakers :P

I think it's pretty much branding and marketing. Pretty sure that just by adding Dr. Dre's name to the branding it adds a damn lot to the price.

yeah, it's almost entirely because of those dumb "beats" things. before, the only pricey headphones people could get in a target or store like that were from bose, and they don't flood things with advertising etcetera. whoever it was that came up with those dumb things, though, also marketed them well enough to sucker lots of people into buying them, and then, once people were "used" to paying more for headphones, all the other companies started raising prices as well. my advice is what it's always been: get something higher-end (but none of the "audiophile" stuff. something in the 100-200 USD price range) from audiotechnica, sennheiser, or some other equivalent company that's been around as long. headphones like those sound fantastic and last for years, and those companies have warranties and let you send them in to be repaired for a fee even after the warranties expire.

EDIT: the smaller, light-weight stuff usually isn't a good idea, but even they are pretty durable. i've had a pair of these (http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-EW9-Lightweight-Clip-Headphones/dp/B000CMTV3I) for about a year and a half now and used them every other day when i'm at work for hours at a time, and they're still working fine (despite my having lost their carrying pouch and just tossing them in with other things instead X_X).

It mostly depends. I got myself a Logitech G430 at best buy this summer for $50 and it does sound pretty good though the mic generates noise. It's pretty sturdy too. But yeah the Beats/DrDre crap is probably one cause to this (I've been told the sound is not that good BTW).

Have you tried to purchase the latest Macbook model? It's way more expensive than its predecessors, i can assure you! :P
As to the headphones, i really can't complain that much as i've lately bought myself a very cheap chinese pair for only  5€uros,Yeah! (My daughters have screwed-up all my good old headphones!).  :'(

Well, it depends. You don't have children yet do you? ;)

Yeah, Logitech, Bose, Sennheiser and friends are always a good choice.

I tried a lot of headphones for 2 entire years, I can tell you that most of them are not worth their price. There are even weird things, like the AKG K420 being better and cheaper than the AKG K430, which is meant to be an evolution of the K420.

Anyway, I tried no-audiophile headphones like Wesc ones, they are a huge joke. What you pay is the look you get when wearing them.
I tried audiophile ones like the Sennheiser HD 250, it was not so bad but the AKG K420 still was a lot better (and cheaper). What you pay there is the reputation of the brand.

Of course, not all headphones are overpriced crap, the Bose QC15 really fits my needs (and you can guess how demanding I am if I spent 2 years looking for headphones). Its "hardware" is overpriced for sure, but this time you don't pay for look or for reputation, you pay for quality and research (you have to pay the guys who created this after all).

(And I don't talk about the Beats because even in 2 years I never managed to try any. Shops always had a problem, either they were broken or they were missing batteries).

___

So yeah, if you want a good compromise between price and quality, I advise you to get the AKG K420. The only downside of it is that its isolation is really poor so you won't hear a lot of music if you are in a train next to a crying baby. But if you are at home, you'll have the best sound I've ever tried.

Yea, having cool looking headphones to show off has become a fad recently with the intro of Beats by Dre. Every other manufacturer jumped on board and prices rose as a result. I have a few decent pairs, one is a big over the ear set by Sony, and the other is a pair of over the ear Skull Candy headphones. I think both were~$30. The Skull Candy pair was bought within a year, the Sony ones are a bit older.

*Edit* I just use these at home, if I'm out I just use some cheap earbuds. It seems weird to me to be wearing bulky headphones when I'm out and about.

I actually prefer the lightweight ones as long as they aren't too tight, because of my neck problems. Just an extra weight on my head seems to render my neck very stiff after a while, so I certainly won't use huge headphones again. However, what I hate about lightweight ones is that they are either too tight (causing me headaches) or they are just iPod-like earphones that keeps falling off my ears.

Even if I choose lightweight ones, though, some are still really expensive.

If you're looking in store, BestBuy tends to have a pretty good selection.

Well the AKG K420 is lightweight (see spoiler to see is size on somebody's head), and can be found for 35€ in France. I don't know about its price in Canada but it should be 300€.
Beware though if you buy it, the foam is not really resistant. so you may want to add something on it to keep it in place.

No thanks. Over here, they mainly have the expensive gaming ones. Also although they have decent prices on some things, others are really overpriced. I mean, for example, they tried to charge me $299.99 for an HDMI switch box, when Amazon has them for like $30.

Ahh, that sucks. They are definitely overpriced on some things. :/

Dunno if they're available in Canada, but Philips SHL3000 are a great deal if you want to get cheap headphones. Been using mine for ages, still working 100% despite heavy-duty use.

I bought some really nice Republic Sol earbuds for $50 that I'm really impressed with. Definitely worth it.

Blame the hipsters, headphones are more of a fashion statement now.

This kind of stuff makes little sense to us geeks.
