The best place for HP Prime hacking/development discussion...
« on: December 10, 2013, 03:35:45 pm »
...is right here! (As well as Cemetech and TI-Planet)

Ok, maybe Cemetech and TI-Planet don't have as much HP discussion right now, but still, what is unique about Omnimaga and those two forums is that it is possible to showcase your HP Prime games, development tools or ask for help on creating them without constantly being reprimanded for turning the calculator into a toy and not using it for its primary educational purposes (when in fact, to program games, especially 3D and physics-oriented ones, you need maths/physics knowledge). People here and there share common interests, while still taking great interest towards maths.

Also, over here, you'll not see complains and complains from HP 50g/84+ people about how the forums are being flooded by HP Prime or TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition topics or vice-versa. Everyone is free to program and discuss whatever calculator they like. Heck, even on Cemetech where a big TI-Nspire CX rant was posted, you'll still be fine if you post a TI-Nspire CX project. The comments when you showcase your work will remain about the work itself (Omni may be the forum with the fewest amount of comments directed at the programming language choice or the language used for the project, but still, you get the idea). Your work won't get singled out if it's not math-related, and math work will be encouraged as well (unless you're just making a program that has already been made many times before, but that goes for games too).

Also, contrary to what certain people believe, TI calculator forum members DO take interest in maths and science; they're not just kids who only care about playing Pokémon on their calc. This is why, for example, Omnimaga has a math and science sub-forum. People who only register here to ask help to play Mario or to cheat rarely stay around anyway (and they get reprimanded for asking help to cheat if they do). Calculator programming helped students in their careers in some cases.

I can't really speak for the two other forums mentionned above, but I guess I wouldn't be wrong to mention that in those parts of the TI community that have showed interest towards the HP Prime, you have the freedom to use your newly purchased machine in whatever way you want, and if you want to showcase your projects without seeing your topic polluted into an argument about the worthiness of calculator games, then you have come at the right place! (It requires an account, though, which can be signed up with any kind of e-mail address)

As for the HP Prime material on Omnimaga itself, those would be the right places for it:
HP Prime help, programming and hacking discussion
HP Prime projects/program showcase (games, math programs, tools, etc)
Omnimaga news might have HP Prime-related news from time to time too.
Omnimaga downloads section (If you have less than 40 posts, you can also attach your files on the forums)
HP Prime Connectivity kit/firmwares: ftp.hp.com/pub/calculators/Prime/
Sprite tools (for use with DIMGROB_P): http://ourl.ca/19398

In case you are also a fan of other HP calculators, there is a sub-forum for them too:
Discussions about other HP graphing calculators

Since Omnimaga has covered TI material for over a decade, it's obvious that most discussion will be TI-centric, but we are open to all calculator brands and if HP/Casio forums ever decided to branch out to other calculator brands like we did with HP and Casio, then we don't mind. We feel that HP fans should be grateful that fans of a competing calculator brand show interest towards their favorite one.

In case you are wondering where I went, I left Omni back in 2015 to form CodeWalrus due to various reasons explained back then, but I stopped calc dev in 2016 and am now mostly active on the CW Discord server at https://discord.gg/cuZcfcF

To back up what you're saying:

I know kids who are only interested in getting pokemon on their calculator. They're kids who don't care about school or anything like that. Those people come to these sites, download, and leave.

BUT

There are the people who come to the site for different reasons. They are the ones who make awesome projects. They are the ones who came because they want to make cool stuff. They are also the ones taking advanced classes and who are doing great things outside of calculators. THOSE are the members of Omni, not the "I wantz teh minecrafts on teh calcz" kids.

That is all.
I am Bach.

True. The point of my post, however, is that not the majority of members here are just calc gamers who don't care about maths/school, unlike what some people pretend about all TI forums. The vast majority of discussion here is about development, which involves some maths in many cases. Same for the work put into many games and programs.
