Title: This is not Spam.
Post by: JustCause on July 19, 2012, 05:29:30 pm
Just a friendly reminder to all members: As a rule, on-topic and relevant discussion is still expected in this subforum. This is not a free-for-all, and members who treat this subforum like Spam 2.0 will receive appropriate consequences.

With that said, having fun is not against Omnimaga rules. :)

CLARIFICATION EDIT

Examples of disallowed material (put it in spam):

Also, I should add something about losing the game: you should post /me lost messages only when relevant and if it adds something to the discussion, otherwise it might be considered spam. (So if you're gonna reply /me lost alone, it might not be a good idea, unless you also add something that is relevant to the discussion, that is, a real reply.)

Well, so far it seems one member sometimes treat every forum section including project/news as spam anyway <_< (as in, for example, totally random /me lost the game posts with absolutely nothing else, even though no other post in the topic can make you lose)

Thanks for the reminder JC. Temporarily disabling the Spam board doesn't mean we're going to push the spam somewhere else.

I was however very tempted to reply that to this post. :P

Yeah, I agree that this shouldn't be used as a spam section. Also Deep Though, I didn't know it was temporary?

I believe it ends as soon as Omni found a way to automatically cap the board at 10% of the content (above which the spam section automatically locks itself down or vice-versa) or maybe when it gets back under 10%)

That reminds me, spam was particularly bad on the old board. During the last half of 2006, it was over 25% of the entire Omni content posted at that time O.O (about 5000 posts out of 20000)

But then again, didn't you have 2 major counting threads? :P

Don't we still have them from the Minus World Merge (hm, we need an official name for that), and that supplemented by newer threads? :P

The two number counting threads from the minus world were because it was two different databases. There was a new number thread started here before the minus world merge, but it never really took off then when the old posts were re-added to the current site people went back to the largest of the three threads.

There needs to be clarifications to humor and jokes rules, regarding what exactly is allowed and what's not, because earlier today I received a warning about misuse of the humor section, even though I believe I was within forum rights, and the thread involved was moved to spam. I did not mind the move as much because the thread, while I believe it's not spam, was at risk of starting spam. However I did not see anything anywhere in this topic's first post nor the forum rules disallowing my topic.

Would it be possible to edit this forum sticky to include clearer examples of what's not allowed? For example:

-Is it now prohibited to mention you lost the game anywhere under any circumstances, even if most of your post is on-topic?
-What kind of trolling, other than the offensive kind, is disallowed there, if any? (For example, misleading thread titles, prank softwares/links, sarcastic posts, etc)
-Are any form of forum game (9000 signs you're addicted to calcs clones, for instance, or "create a basic program by posting 4 new lines of code every post") disallowed here?
-Image-only threads (such as funny pics)
-Is moderation here done arbitrarily, where a thread is moderated only if found, or are there other criterias?  (seeing as http://ourl.ca/16663 was moved, but not http://ourl.ca/16696 )
-Possibly other things?

It would be nice to not be scared of posting in a forum section in fear that our topic might be locked. Better prevent than heal.

I agree to this. The thread was started for a good laugh, which is the entire scope of Humor and Jokes.

Imo, I don't think it qualified as spam. Spam would be more on the immature, nonsensical side of things. The thread I don't think had gotten to that point yet.

I believe he was within forum rights too, but I still gave him a friendly warning as one of the admins thought it was spam (maybe because of the game losing line, I dunno).

Well, at least it lead to this discussion about clear rules. The line between Humor and Jokes and Spam is pretty unclear, which leads to confusion. I think not even every admin agrees about how game losing is allowed.

Bump:

Does the rules in the first post mentionning that relevant discussion can happen only means that forum games are disallowed or only allowed with moderation? I am wondering since there have been quite a few forum games popping up lately and there was complain about the New Posts section being cluttered with them.

Well, as long the answers of the games aren't filled with stuff with "lolol the game", but more constructive stuff, I guess it's fine.

Yeah I was more wondering about the rate at which a forum game can be active. For example, if Omnimaga averages at 400 posts per day, but that 200 of those posts are just 9001 signs you're addicted to Omnimaga, would it be problematic? Or if for example there are multiple variations of the same forum game, is one of them locked and the other one open?

i think forum games are ok. Maybe the humor section could be excludeded from the new posts list though, as its not really relevant.

Its useful being able to see all the new posts though. At least it is for me.
Maybe there could be a forum games section?

The only way to do this is updating to EzPortal 0.6.6 which allows admins to do so. However, by doing so, you would break the latest downloads on the front page, as well as replace the links in the Welcome user box with the avatar (linking to the buggy New posts from SMF rather than the custom one we use). Another alternative would be an admin taking the code from 6.6 and adding a custom PHP block with that code.

Also yeah Qwerty.55 if games are allowed entirely, that might be problematic because people will open Word Association, Count to 4000, ban the user above you, etc, which get quite spammish fast. Maybe limit it to certain elaborate games like the few currently active ones that aren't duplicates?

Ah, I thought it was simply activating a setting. I thought i remembered new posts in the spam section not showing up before, but maybe that was just with the post notification in omnom.

Nah, the feature was only added in version 0.6.2 and Omni uses an unnoficial modified version of 0.4.1.

And yeah it was Omnom, but Omnom used to not show humor posts either. Else for spam it might have been due to how it was closed in July 2012.
