Title: A Cherry-Flavored * Draws Near (again)
Post by: Iambian on September 04, 2008, 02:15:51 pm
So, *this* is the new take on Omnimaga. I'm glad it's back up and running again, and I hope that nothing like before will ever happen again.

On a somewhat lighter note, I get to say "Hi" since this is the first time I'm on this particular incarnation of Omnimaga.

uh oh, cherry invasion x.x

er.. Hi, sorry I totally forgot to tell you about the new board, i pretty much just edited the chan topic and told people who were on in the channel but that's about it. I have yet to announce it on other boards (which might wait until the archive section is more decently complete), glad you're back and I hope you finish your shooter and Celtic III.

This board is actually meant to be a permanent board, unlike the previous one which was meant to be a temporary replacement to the Invisionfree one. When the old one is back (which is not likely to happen in the near future) we're not going back on it like what was planned on the old temp forum. If I am lucky and I am able to merge all databases together then good, else, oh well, I'll just link to the old board for nostalgia purpose. This time I also host it on my paid host so if something bad had to happen at least we would have access to backups and put back the board online ourselves without having to wait 2 years. Only #omnimaga people mostly are aware of the new board yet though, I'll prbly announce it when the download section is more complete.

(on a side note I'm still debating about reviving the featured RPG projects section because there appears to be more RPGs in the works atm in the community but this time I wonder if I should expand it to tools that can help making them as well, such as Celtic III. This generally involves a sub forum for each projects with a topic suming up what it is and a link to the original thread unless the author decided to post here as well.)

I kinda like this board already. Sure, it doesn't have some of the fancy features that I've gotten used to, but this one is pretty functional from a user point of view. It also has a nice clean appearance to it, which is something I like very much.

The idea about linking to the old board might be nice for some of the people here who want to read up on some of those really old posts just to get a handle on what they ought to do next (I'm not exactly in that position, so I can't really say for sure). It shouldn't be the most important thing on your mind at the moment, though. What I'd like to know is whether or not your staff and/or the board is tight enough to withstand and deal with a public announcement of this new Omnimaga and the "bad people" that might follow. When I said something about "nothing like before", I was really hinting on those attacks on the old board.

On another note, I *do* plan on making a "final" release of Celtic III as soon as I can iron enough bugs out and produce an application with a valid signature. Expect something like that... like... next month, maybe?

Also, I'm going to need a place to discuss the shooter that I'm trying to produce. *hinthint* :)

EDIT: Oh, one more thing. I noticed that clicking the huge Omnimaga banner at the top isn't hyperlinked (preferably to the homepage). I've gotten used that one little feature, so would it be too much trouble to add that in, or does SMF not let you do that?

moar celtic/shooter progress ^.^

lol j/k don't rush. About the banner link I could add that back maybe, I had this for a while but I didn't liked it too much, which is why I had it disabled on the 55k posts board. Oh and I do hope not too much spam attacks occurs here x.x, despite it wouldnt be as hard to counter considering the entire staff is global moderator now

Hi Iambien, keep up the good progress on *ALL* of you'r prjects :P

I'd be glad to help you find bugs and such, I found a few in DCS6 that where kinda stupid, but I really don't think that KermMartian ever fixed them because they where kinda out there  :-\

Anyway, happy you joined, hopefully when DJ_Omnimaga gets to posting on other boards, this one will be alittle more active  ;D

yeah, there's only a select few boards I'Ll announce it though, considering who visit the others and that my site isn't really aimed toward that kind of person. I'll pretty much post about it on UTI and TI-Freakware when I can get more active again there and get them to re-add the link to their link section. As for MaxCoderz and Revsoft I'll forget about it because I feel kinda weird to advertise a different TI forum on a website that struggle with inactivity alerady and the site still seems listed in Revsoft link section anyway. I added it back to ticalc.org.

Struggling? I though RevSoft was doing fairly decent... At least better than OTBP

EDIT: It looks like Outside The Box Programming didn't make it :(

Art_of_camelot chanted the spell of Cherrybane. Ah, classics never die :). Nice to see you made your way here. I look foward to seeing celtic III completed. I am also interested to see what you have in store for your shooter.

Actually Revsoft doesn't have much active staff that's what I mean. There's some progress on projects every now and then but I mean it was rarely more active than TI-Freakware since most staff are extremly busy. Maybe it changed lately though. It's sure more active than MaxCoderz though, considering that last one was down for almost 3 weeks

Oh definetly, MaxCoderz isn't that active at all, I don't think it ever has been, but those posts and topics had to come from somewhere I guess  :-\

MC used to be the most active TI forum on the web around 2003-2005, but then website moved to new URL and they didn't do promotion, they decided to remove all old games they released before from their download section then then staff went inactive and it went downhill like this.

On a happier note, Welcome Iambian!

Strange, OTBP had over 1000 posts, right? I guess that was because of when Calc84 went inactive for almost 3 months and the fact admins had to validate accounts manually due to spambot attacks and didn't (had to wait months before getting my acct approved) x.x

I'm glad he's still around though. And I hope Iambian releases a new version of Celtic III soon :)

EDIT: Ugh it appears OTBP is down x.x

Maybe someone didn't feel like paying the bills anymore? That's my guess, but it's just a guess, anything could have resulted in OTBP's downage.

Actually, it got blocked because it was running a background process on the server or something. I fixed it today, hooray. By the way, the post count is 2008. ;D

Oh, ok, maybe I should switch hosting... mine keeps going down, of course I hope it's just server maintenance...

@Calc84maniac: do the have any restrictions on PHP? I wanted to run a PHP Chan Bot bot they have certain restrictions that disallow socket connections and such (;-_-)

yeah true, at least Revsoft almost always had projects running through their lifetime, else they would probably be dead by now. MaxCoderz only has activity because it's old, forum has by far over 30000 posts and they are still well known despite their location being confusing since they never advertised the move to maxcoderz.org domain anywhere ever. They rarely ever get anymore updates for their projects, most haven't been getting real updates since 3 years
