Title: Hey Guys!
Post by: Magic Banana on June 07, 2010, 07:51:50 pm
Found this great place after I was looking into getting back into TI programming and found this awesome thing called the Axe Parser, which is just perfect for me. Seeing as how I'm a Computer Science major, it's pretty similar to other languages I've used (mostly C), all while keeping it in BASIC syntax with on-calc editing and compiling.

Right now I'm going to college and taking math classes right now, so I'll have plenty of time to code now. When I was in high school, I was pretty good with TI-BASIC on my TI-83, impressing all my friends with their TI-84+SE's by showing off all the programs I made. I remember my last project on it was an RPG done entirely in BASIC, which was unfinished because it ended up taking up the entire calculator's RAM - 1k to prevent ERR:MEMORY (most of my programming was spent optimizing and preventing memory leaks between programs).

Now with my TI-83+SE and Axe, I hope to actually finish an RPG as well as any other projects I feel like doing on my free time. I don't know if it will be at the professional level I've seen here, but if I ever get around to finishing it, I might upload it here to share.

Welcome to Omnimaga. I hope you enjoy your stay. You should be receiving some complimentary peanuts shortly.

We'd love to see what programs you have up your sleeve if you wanna share them :)

Alright, sounds delicious.

Right now I'm just getting used to Axe. I don't think I've really finished any big projects, just a bunch of small ones. Mostly because the old 83 had only so much to put on it. Once I get the hang of Axe, I'll be sure to submit a game or two here.

Welcome!

Axe really is as good as it sounds. My only complaint with it thus far is the high compiled size (for me, usually ends up about double the source unoptimized) but even that is pretty much my fault for being a lousy programmer.

Thank you for using Omnimaga airlines, and enjoy your meal!

If you get good enough by september, you might consider entering the summer axe contest!

Hi! Glad to see you around :)

I am glad you are interested into calc programming. Hopefully the new language should suit your needs.

Don't worry about not being at the level of programming here. Because of the large amount of good looking programs that came out in the past few years on Omnimaga, some new members might think we are all "pro" programmers and that the bar is very high in terms of what we consider as good when members showcase their projects, but as the front page introduction says (and as it always have been on Omnimaga), we are very open minded about what new members have to offer and it doesn't matter how good the programmer is and what language he uses to program. If new programmers need help creating their project we will be glad to help out and give suggestions. Everyone had to start somewhere, after all. ;) (I'm still an Axe Parser newbie, sort of, despite having used TI-BASIC for almost 9 years :P)

Welcome! Since you already have some programming experience (C and TI BASIC) transitioning to AXE should be easier for you. Glad to <s>have some fresh meat, and another victim to Rickroll >:D </s>  see more new faces around here! I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay. =D

Thanks guys, I can't wait to dig into those peanuts.

Hmm, Well, seeing as how I'm taking a few classes over the summer - one being a math class - I should have plenty of time to get my Axe skills up and might take part in that coding contest. I've only used it for about a week or so but I can already think of some amazing things that it can do (if only I knew how to implement them all).

I've actually already been rickroll'd a few times before registering, but I like it. It really adds some 'zazz' to the place.

The bad part is when we start embedding rickrolls inside everyone's signatures with a few occasional redirects ;D

j/k we're not that bad :P

Some randomness is cool indeed sometimes (well providing it's done moderately) otherwise it gets somewhat boring if the place is too serious D:

Thanks guys. I'll probably be sticking around here for a while because I have a lot of free time between now and the Fall semester. Even then I'm not taking that many classes, so I'll have enough time to get pretty good at Axe (hopefully) and maybe even submit a game or two here.

Nice I can't wait to see what you will come up with. I also hope after Fall you don't leave completly though D:

Probably not. Programming on the calc is a great way to keep my programming skills up, and since my major is focusing in programming, I don't plan on leaving so soon.  ;D

cool ^^

(also if you ever moved to PC programming, especially games, or even ROM hacking, the site here is kinda game-oriented and there are non-calc dev section, so people might be interested. I hardly ever did PC programming, though. The last thing I did was 3 Visual BASIC 6.0 games around 2002-03 and a RPG Maker 2003 game in 2007)

Ha ha, I remember RPG Maker.  ;D  I still have like 3 unfinished RPGs in VX.

I've played around with rom hacking a bit, but I never really got involved in it. I think the only things I've done successfully was hack some the text in Legend of Zelda for the NES and make a level in Super Mario World.

I've already taken a couple classes, mostly in VB.NET and C, but they don't exactly teach you how to make games on those. I do have a few applications from VB.NET like a calculator and text editor, but no games yet. I do remember coding a primitive RPG using the command prompt in C though.

In my case, the first VB game I made was a game similar to Myst style, where you didn't see your char, just a map where you picked items with drag and drop, but even simpler. Sadly, unless you're a lucky person who managed to find a serial of ANIGIF.OCX online (which is impossible today), you wouldn't be able to play it. That was a school project. Once I was done I made a plane shooting (very simple) in about 20 minutes. The next year I made a game similar to the first one but with tilemapping and top down view with character. It doesn,t work under Windows 7, though, it seems (missing ocx file even if present on the computer). Had I got a computer at home back then to work on the game, it would have featured RPG battles too.

That was back in 2002-03 btw x.x

The 2007 RM2k3 game I finished is available in downloads section but it's a bit simple in terms of features, but it wasn't helped much due to the story it's based on (sequel to it). I worked on another game in 2008 in it but I never finished it. That one had a real time battle system, which was rather buggy x.x

One awesome thing is if someone ported Axe Parser final version to the computer so we can easily port calc games to the computer ;D

All of those were in VB6? Nice. Nowadays with .NET, we get so many fancy features to work with that most of the code will write itself. Not saying that is a bad thing though.

I remember when I was working with VX, I found this forum where they had these 'addons' of sorts that added various functions to enhance the game, and I gt so overwhelmed by integrating all these features into my RPGs that I never got around to working on the story.  :P

Yeah, that would be awesome. Maybe even make color and sound support as well, similar to those color hacks for old gameboy games.

Speaking of sound support, I know that Axe can make sounds, but is it possible to implement it into games yet? I don't think that Axe is as touchy as Omnicalc when it comes to playing sounds or having headphones plugged in, but I've never gotten around to trying it out. I'd love to see it integrated into later versions of Axe so that we can have sounds or even music  :D in Axe games.

We can have sound in Axe games, except only one sound channel at a time and execution is stopped during the entire duration of the sound. Basically games can run much slower (altough much faster than in BASIC)

There was a GameBoy color hack?
Title: Re: Hey Guys!
Post by: Magic Banana on June 09, 2010, 06:23:46 am
Yeah, people have made some hacks which color some gameboy games. I don't know which ones were hacked, you might have to look around for them. I remember it best with Metroid II, which actually looks pretty good with it. Basically, Some people create an ips, which is than patched into gameboy rom. After it is patched, it can be run on any emulator just like the normal game.

Here's a screenshot of the game with the color hack.

EDIT: Replaced the link.

Yea, I remember seeing one for Super Mario Land somewhere, but that was quite a while ago. Metroid II actually runs with some color if played on a gameboy color or a super gameboy. Many gameboy games did this with limited pallets when gameboy color first came out in order to maintain backwards compatibility.
