Title: Hi
Post by: Scipi on September 12, 2010, 03:11:34 am
I am HOMER-16. I can program in TI-BASIC (fluently) and I am currently learning HTML, CSS, JS, and C/C++. Eventually I want to be able to program in ASM.

I love video games and I hope to be a video game designer.

Already I've found this site to be helpful. I look forward to participating in some of the competitions.

Hi HOMER-16!  Is it safe to assume that you are 16 due to your username?  By TI-Basic, do you mean the ti 83+ series of TI-Basic?  Great to hear about the HTML, etc stuff!  You should check out jBOS (http://ourl.ca/6072[/url), and help me and Eeems develop for it! :D

17 actually, nearly 18. 16 is my lucky number. Yes I do mean the 83+/84 series. And I will check out jBOS. I am in Skills USA for web design and am learning from the best in the State (but Im still at noob level right now). Actually they got 3rd in nationals last year and 7th this year.

Wow, very nice :D  Is there a link to this Skills USA thing?  I'd like to check it out :)

There are competitions for just about everything. From welding to Web design.

Computer Programming
Competition consists of project coding and output, a skill-related written test and an interview. The contestants will receive a packet that includes instructions to the written test and each of the two projects. Each project's specifications are written for Visual Basic, Java, C#, C++ and RPG. The projects will be saved on the Desktop in a folder called "SkillsUSA Contestant#_." All projects will be downloaded to a jump drive or diskette (whichever the student prefers) and transferred to a main station to be printed, both code and screen.
:D

My high school has something very similar, TSA (http://www.tsaweb.org/High-School-Competitions) (technology student assoc.)  Its got some nice competitions, but not nearly as many as yours has.  :)

Hmm. That quote you posted is interesting. I didn't know there was a computer programming comp. (Though it only makes sense that it does) I wonder if the RPG is basically games. :? Or is it just the name of some programming language :P

lol, I didn't even read that part :P  I just saw the word "program" so I copy-pasted ;)  TSA has something similar
Quote
Video Game Design   Participants (three teams per state) develop an E-rated game that focuses on the subject of their choice. The game should be interesting, exciting, visually appealing and intellectually challenging. The game should have high artistic, educational, and social value. A working, interactive game will be submitted on a DVD for evaluation.

Also:
Quote
Webmaster  Participants (one team of three to five members per chapter) are required to design, build and launch a World Wide Web site that features the school’s career and technology education program, the TSA chapter, and the chapter’s ability to research
topics pertaining to technology. Conference semifinalists participate in an on-site interview to demonstrate the knowledge and expertise gained during the development of the website with an emphasis on Internet and web history, web design (school, chapter and design brief pages), and research about cutting edge advances in technology. Click here for the design brief.

I'm glad to see you around here. I hope you stick around. I also can't wait to see what you will come up with in terms of projects  :) You seem to be interested in a lot of programming-related stuff so far. Are you planning to do calculator stuff for a while?

As for RPGs, they are role-playing games, such as Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest.

Lol NICE! E-rated? In a high-school environment? It should at least be T. ;D

I think he is referring to how RPG was listed with the other languages.  Either way, it's odd that they put that there with the rest of the languages...

Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_RPG

Edit: Edit: I know right!  I wanted to do a FPS soo baddlly.  The only workaround I thought of was to make it like bloons.  You are the monkey, and you go around shooting darts at the enemies.  That would take it down to E :)

Edit: Edit: Edit: I was about to say that they should raise it to M... but being highschool... with high school guys... yeah...

Oh ok, lol. Wow I didn't notice and I am surprised there would be a language called RPG O.o.

As for calcs, you should probably look into Axe Parser as well after you are comfortable enough with TI-BASIC. Of course ASM is a great option too since it allows even more freedom but Axe can be an alternative if you find ASM too hard to learn or code but find TI-BASIC too slow and limited for what you need.

Yes I was referring to this.

Yes Im going to do calc stuff until I get good enough with C/C++ to take over.

I already got an idea for a project. I might post it a little further into production.

Edit: Yes I saw that Axe Parser. I will try it out.

Also note, the introduce me section doesn't raise post counts, so you will probably want to announce your project elsewhere :P  (I mean, everyone wants to buy a blue lobster with their post counts.  right!? :D)
Title: Re: Hi
Post by: Scipi on September 12, 2010, 03:50:06 am
Lol I know where to announce the project. Im not too worried with post counts yet. On another forum site I got 991 posts so there's my blue lobster ;D

Nice :D  Btw, do you read xkcd.com or misfile.com?  Also, what kind of music interests you?
Title: Re: Hi
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 12, 2010, 03:52:40 am
Yeah originaly post count was enabled in intro, but then people started using the intro board as a backdoor to raise their post count with no effort, so it got disabled. It got re-enabled again when the spam slowed down, but when activity peaked, we had to disable it again D:

Also I hope that when you are experienced with C++ that you stick around for a while or even still do some calc stuff from time to time. It would suck if you vanished after 6 months :(

We have a non-calc projects section anyway, not to mention the Ndless allows you to program in C for the Nspire, meaning you could port some simpler computer C games you would make to the Nspire :D

I am interested in soundtracks mostly from games like Final Fantasy. I also listen to muse, Coldplay, and some Disturbed.

I do plan to stick around a while. I may even help develop the site when Im skilled enough.

I see.  I wonder if by edit the site, you mean make stuff like OmnomIRC (the thing at the top of the screen that shows what a bunch of us say)?
Title: Re: Hi
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 12, 2010, 04:06:57 am
Yeah it would be cool. Of course, for that, though, the user needs to have been around for quite a while, though, since we try to know them first and see if they'll remain around. However, there are occasions where some people may be able to help even without file access. E.g, Netham45 gives someone the OmnomIRC source code, the user modifies it to fix stuff and finally Netham45 replaces the old source code, making a backup of it beforehand.

And glad to hear you may stick around for a while ^^

I guess. That actually reminds me. I have an idea for the site. Ill post it in the site feedback forum.

Aah ok. But yeah, keep in mind that there are things we can do but others we cannot. I am not a website coding person, personally. I just dislike it. Hence why we are using a pre-made software with mods. :(

Just creating the forum default theme, for example, took me about 2 weeks x.x. 1 week to design the images then another to edit the CSS/do some adjusting x.x.

Ahh. My friend is more the coder. Though I am more an "idea" person and the look of a page. Again, Im still at noob level so this might b some time from now.
Title: Re: Hi
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 12, 2010, 04:15:02 am
Aah ok I see. Personally I'm more into the design part of stuff than coding. When I do games, I like to add features and stuff but not to code them. THis is why many of my calc games, despite being liked by many people (and 7 of them being featured on ticalc.org in news articles), the optimizing part of the coding was rushed. Illusiat 13 saw lots of optimizations, but many were missed, I am sure.

EDIT: Oh! I forgot!

Your peanuts, given to you the original 2006 way ;D

*before* the abundance of limited addition peanuts were found.  I bet a certain blue lobster we know was hoarding them, and giving them out to people sekrutly >.>

Edit: The peanuts are a meme from looonngg ago, when omnimaga was... idk 4 years younger I guess.  Just a friendly introduction :D

Yeah someone on the old forums (Invisionfree) started it around mid 2006 (maybe before), and it spread among all users over time, so much that around late 2007 and early 2008, it even spread on United-TI forums (which was heavily frequented by Omnimaga members at the time) and when Omnimaga re-opened after a 6 months downtime, people kept the meme alive :P

I think the sentence that started it was "Don't forget to grab peanuts at the entrance!", in response to someone's intro. Before the peanut bag, we had a peanut emoticon :P

At least we have a meme that started before rickroll ;D
