Title: Hi - And random questions
Post by: wormyrocks on September 02, 2010, 08:34:42 pm
Hi, I'm a high school nerd, know a teensy bit of programming, and have an 84+ and an Nspire touchpad. Nothing out of the ordinary.
I have... 3 questions.
-I want to run Ndless on the Nspire but I don't want to downgrade my operating system. Is there any point in waiting for a version of Ndless to be released that is compatible with 2.0 or is there some fundamental restriction that TI has figured out to prevent that from happening?
-I'm writing an Nspire document during boring classes- a compendium of dirty jokes  ;D Some of them are of the question and answer variety, and I need a way to make the answer stay hidden after the document is closed and reopened and all the answers are spoiled. Kind of stupid of TI when you think about it... how does one set the default to hide the answer when the file is opened?!
-If I finish my 'dirty jokes compilation' do you think it'll be allowed on ticalc.org? It's not pornographic but some of the jokes are pretty raunchy.

Thanks in advance guys.

Hello and welcome here.  I can't answer your questions about the Nspire, but I'm sure someone else here can.

Oh, and your peanuts should be arriving shortly. :P

Hi!

I can answer you Nspire questions for you:

1. Right now, you can only use Ndless on OS 1.1.  I believe support for OS 1.7 will be comming soon (there is not too much difference between 1.7 and 2.0)

2. If I am not mistaken, you can do a "question and answer" type setup in the notes app.  Open a new notes page, press menu, then, i believe, templates.  That might hide the answer. EDIT: Nevermid, I misread your first post, you are already using these.  I am not sure about this, as I have never used them.  You might actually want to ask TI about this, they might actually be able to answer your question...

3. Not sure about this one...

Heya and welcome on the forums!

For now, I don't think TI has found out how to prevent Ndless on OS 1.7, 2.0/2.0.1 and 2.1, but Ndless developers are very busy so development is very very slow. Hopefully it will be possible to run Ndless on newer OSes soon, but it could still take several months. You can downgrade to 1.1 but 1.1 can be a bit annoying to use (the power management bug) and a lot of stuff such as the BASIC programming capabilities are missing, not to mention new documents woN't work on it.

As for the dirty jokes program, I am not sure if it would be allowed on ticalc, though. You can post it here, though, assuming it doesn't contain actual porn or extremly offensive content.

So is it possible to downgrade to 1.1, install Ndless, then re-upgrade back to 2.1?
And thank you, I think I will :)

Yes, but only if you have the clickpad keypad.  Otherwise, you will get an "Ndless" reboot.  You can upgrade your OS at any time with Ndless installed.

EDIT:  Also, I should note that you will not be able to open any Nspire documents made on any OS higher than 1.1 if you do downgrade.

I have the touchpad... that means I can't downgrade? Or that I can't upgrade? or that it'll screw up some step in between?

You can downgrade if you have the touchpad keypad (and upgrade back without any problems), but since OS 1.1 is not compatible with the touchpad keypad, it will reboot infinately.  If you want, you can order a clickpad from TI's online store for $10 plus shipping.

What if I borrow a friend's clickpad (yes, I have friends with clickpads =/) and use that to down/upgrade, then give it back and use the touchpad? Does that work OK?
(And off topic, but how do I get things onto my TI-84 keypad without an IO cable? is it possible?)
also, here's my dirty jokes document :)

No, you cannot run OS 1.1 without actually using the clickpad all of the time.  You can downgrade fine with the touchpad, but as I said before, trying to use OS 1.1 with the touchpad will lead to an infinite reboot.

You can send things to the 84 keypad using TI-Connect and the USB Cable that connects to the top of the Nspire.

Ah okay that works.
Here's what I meant. Can I borrow my friend's Clickpad, downgrade to 1.1, install Ndless, use the clickpad to upgrade to 2.1, give the clickpad back, then use the touchpad? Or does it not work like that?

Yeah, that should work, but remember, Ndless will be gone when you go back to 2.1.

...Oh. Lol I wasn't getting that earlier.
OK thanks. xP Guess I'm waiting on the Ndless team then.

I wonder if they will have more free time this Winter? I remember the proof of concept made it to the public in December, then in late February, Ndless was finally out. TI released OS 2.0 right afterward then sent a cease and desist letter to TI-BANK website for hosting copies of OS 1.1

erm, my friend also wants ndless. he has a clickpad. anyone can hook me up with a copy of 1.1 or a link that can get it? if someone could send me a PM that would be great because i'm a noob and i'm not allowed to send 'em myself. thanks in advance cause i probably won't be able to reply to your message. xP

Sadly we cannot send it via PM either because that could get us shut down if 1and1 was forced by TI to screen the database (which, sadly, contains PMs content). THat stuff have to be done via e-mail or another way that is not on a TI site.

and if anyone would like to hook me up with 1.1, send me an email! :D

even if someone were to try to email it to you, you have your profile set not to show your email.

Got an answer to this? "wait, i have ndless.  if i upgrade to os 1.7, will i lose ndless capabilities?"

Yeah you will lose Ndless capabilities with anything other than 1.1

Good to hear! I wish they were easier to find, though. It's strange they aren't with all those networks where laws cannot do anything about piracy. Maybe Google filters them x.x

I have actually found a few 1 or 2 word google searches that produce a certain website as the third or fourth result.  It is really not too hard to find once you find a few kew words/numbers that make it pop up in searches.
