Hi!  Welcome to Omnimaga!

I think you need 5 posts or more to attach forum pictures (or send PMs).  I think - I'm not too sure.

So what kinds of things have you made in BASIC so far?

oh ok maybe later then

so are there like other places to learn basic too?

Try to avoid double posting - try clicking the 'Quick Modify' button to the right or the 'Modify' button at the top right of your post.

tibasicdev.wikidot.com is like the largest resource for TI-BASIC help (but it's forum is pretty dead right now).
Besides omnimaga.org, cemetech.com also has a large community of coders.

Edit: Sorry, it's cemetech.net, not .com

still, omnimaga has the most active forums for TI help and projects.  I suggest you stay here.

Welcome aboard!  I hope you stay for a long time! :D :D

well, we can help you with these, and like I said earlier enjoy your stay here :D

A pokemon or yu-gi-oh game would be cool.  These forums are very active, so I'm sure people would love to hear and help you along with your projects ;)

ok i think I will do the yugoh game. because it looks like a lot of people are doing pokemon and even though theyre not done i don't think anyone has done yugioh before

you're probably right on that.  Well, good luck on that! :D

P.S. not to pick on you or anything but you might want to work on your typing a bit (sorry- it's one of those things that irks me :P)

welcome here!  TI|BD is the best resource, but you can learn from meishe91's tutorial list and just from other people in general.  ;)

btw, I'm shocked you haven't gotten you peanuts yet.  :P

Welcome!  :)

If you want a picture next to your name, you can use the Profile settings and information link under "Profile" at the top of page.

By the way, if you ever feel like trying out a language much faster than BASIC, check out the Axe Parser.

Welcome here, KisforKeyboard!
You should take a look at Axe Parser (http://ourl.ca/4050). This language is similar to basic, but much much more efficient for making games.
Good luck with you project and have fun here.

Actually, I would recommend doing a BASIC project first, because Axe is difficult if you have not mastered BASIC to its extremeities yet.

No offense to contradict you Aichi, yu had a good idea, but I just want to make sure he doesn't get stuck in learning Axe before he can master BASIC :P

It's good to have a feel for BASIC, but I've found on this Team Challenge that my experience with Axe has made my BASIC better too.

Post by: ASHBAD_ALVIN on November 03, 2010, 03:43:18 pm
true, as my experience with ASM made Axe a replacement for BASIC with me :D

But still, he should take it kinda slow, unless he's sure about being extremely competant in BASIC.

Or you could learn both at the same time...BASIC has some advantages (Non-crashing, super easy external variables, no pointers) but axe definitely wins in speed and graphics.

Welcome! It's always nice to see a new face.

haha those are good ideas! i have a question though what is xLib?
my firend game me a pokemon game and it needed xlib to run i got it to work but in the readme it said the creator had a topic here and i was wondering if there's a later version

and sorry ashbad, spanish is my first language but I'll try to type better for you.
Title: Re: hi I'm good at BASIC
Post by: ASHBAD_ALVIN on November 03, 2010, 03:58:27 pm
oh, spanish is?  Then I guess you have an excuse, sorry about that :P

xLib is an app you install for your calculator that allows you to draw graphics like sprites and bitmaps 100x faster than manipulating individual pixels in pure BASIC.  It's for use in BASIC, so you could use it if you wanted to in your yu-gi-oh game. :D

ok cool but what happened to that pokemon game? it was really cool becuase you could actually battle and it had graphics and everything. but it was really old so i was wondering if he still working on it

I think he's busy right now, but there's a couple of pokemon projects going on, and I'm pretty sure one of them is active in development ;)

that sucks well i hope he works on it. i even found a youtube video and it looks pretty cool

but i'll try to make a good yugioh game so thanks!

its a running meme here.  they are comlimentary peanuts, for new members and special occasions.  ;)  its also an excuse to make you lose the game.  :P

also, try not to double post within 6 hours.  ;)

Welcome here, KisforKeyboard. I hope you enjoy your stay here.

As for learning TI-BASIC there are a few good sources around. There is TIBD (http://tibasicdev.wikidot.com/home) (TI-BASIC Developer) which is probably one of the best places for individual command learning and such. Another great way to learn is to just look over some code from games and such. That way you can see how things work and get a feel for it. Also, as yunhua98 said, I have some tutorials for here that can help get you started but I have also made a thread that has the links to them along with the other tutorials on this site, and other places, here (http://ourl.ca/4541).

As for learning Axe. It is a much faster language than TI-BASIC (Pure and Hybrid) but it can also be a bit harder to learn if you don't understand the concepts behind pointers and such and although it is recommended that you learn TI-BASIC a bit before it is by no means required (especially if you program in other languages and have experience from those already). But Axe is a wonderful language that people around here have really taken a liking to.

xLib is an assembly library which is essentially just a program that installs a hook (I believe) that lets you use a certain TI-BASIC command and it will run an assembly routine when the TI-BASIC program hits it. It is a very useful application that has been used a lot. I believe tr1p1ea is the one who created it, but I'm not entirely sure. Progress on it, to my knowledge, has been stopped though and the latest version, again to my knowledge, is v0.602b. You'd have to find the original thread or someone else that knows more about that. But as I kinda said it is used for Hybrid TI-BASIC to help run faster and with better graphics and all.

As for Pokemon. Ya, there are already a few versions being worked on. FinaleTI has one in Hybrid TI-BASIC, tifreak has one in Hybrid TI-BASIC too though it's all ASCII sprites and such (except for battles and such), and Madskillz has an assembly clone of Red being worked on. The game that you found, or your friend found, is one by JoeYoung (formally Metagross) and he isn't around Omnimaga due to some issues (he's been banned). But that was before my time so you'd have to ask one for the older members for details on that (probably DJ since he is the one who told me). He is active over at UTI though, I believe. But I'm not 100% sure.

Yu-Gi-Oh though I don't think I've ever seen being worked on but it'd be quite the feat to do with all the information that needs to be stored, but good luck.

I would also suggest maybe not start with a big project if you're pretty new to TI-BASIC as it can just get overwhelming and such. I'm not saying you can't do it as it's been done before, just don't want you to get discouraged or anything :)

Good luck on any projects you start though and can't wait to see what you can come up with. Hope you enjoy it here :D

Edit:
The lobster thing is another meme around here. It's a running joke that Netham45 is a blue lobster. Long story that I don't even really get either :P But ya, as yunhua98 said, the peanuts are another meme in which new users get a bag of peanuts. I think DJ said it started in 2004 (?) and ya. I'm not the greatest historian on the memes :P

Also ya, please try to use the Modify button that is located up in the top right corner of your posts or the quick modify button that is located in the post off to the right side. For a look at the Double Posting rule check out Rule #3 (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=ezportal;sa=page;p=2).

memes aren't supposed to make sense.  ;)  which is why they're funny.  :P  I remember I was so confused when I joined.
EDIT: wow, I got ninja'd by one long post.  :o  but yeah, what meishe said basically summed it up.  ;)  rated up.

oh jajaja joe young was the name of the trainer so it was probably him but he doesn't come here anymore :(

but yeah xlib sounds cool so i'll try it out
Title: Re: hi I'm good at BASIC

It's not that he doesn't come here anymore, it's more that he can't :P

Ya, xLib is a useful application but I would advise learning Pure TI-BASIC thoroughly before you venture into Hybrid TI-BASIC since it can be really tricky.

I'd actually recommend using Doors CS 7 (http://dcs.cemetech.net/index.php?title=Main_Page) instead of xlib. It's more stable and it contains all of the commands for xLib as well as a couple of other assembly libraries.

Wow...three pages in one day. :)
Well, welcome here.
And yeah, I would suggest starting out with something smaller.  It's your choice, though.
I tried to do something huge for my first project, and I failed miserably.
Enjoy your stay here.  And don't worry about grammar and such if you're not a native speaker.  We have lots of French speakers here (like DJ) who don't know English as their first language.

Welcome to Omnimaga! Omnimaga.org is definitely the most active website for ti calcs. Hope you enjoy your stay here!

I guess it's good to start small and work up to big!
Title: Re: hi I'm good at BASIC
Post by: Michael_Lee on November 03, 2010, 07:10:47 pm
While I agree that usually it's better to start small, then work up big, I think you shouldn't let that stop you from programming whatever you want.  Dream big (and plan well)!

Also, you don't have to be incredibly good at BASIC before starting Axe - you should just know the more important commands and be fairly confident in programming with BASIC.  I've always found that for me, Axe is more easier to use then BASIC (but potentially much more dangerous).

I check TIBD regularly because I find that the topics there deal with things I can help with. If you ever need an opcode, just let me know and I'll see what I can come up with :P I program in hex and that can be an advantage to some BASIC programmers. I get to make a bunch of random things happen...

Heya and welcome here, I hope you enjoy your stay. :) Hopefully a lot of people should be able to help you with BASIC/Axe adn even ASM over here. As other people say I suggest to learn BASIC first then you can try Axe, since Axe looks a bit like TI-BASIC but is more complex (although much easier than assembly).

On a side note there are currently 4 Pokémon projects: one by JoeYoung/Metagross111 using CelticIII/DoorsCS, one by FinaleTI using Axe, one by TI-Freak8x using ascii art and mostly TI-BASIC and another in ASM by Buckeye. Their progress is rather slow, though. Also, there were issues that occured with Metagross111 over here that caused him to not be allowed in anymore :(. Nothing really bad with him, though, it's just that he did stuff that we are less tolerant on than some other forums (which he doesn't do all the time) and it kinda clashed with some members including myself. :( Unfortunately, since we try to keep things as friendly as possible around here it didn't work very well. I'm still looking forward for his Pokémon clone. Also I think his video had like 30000 views O.O

He switched, I think,  but maybe he kept it hybrid still, to circumvent the 8 KB code/16 KB size limit

Dang it, it's Buckeye's, not Madskillz...my bad :(
