Holy Crap!
« on: July 20, 2010, 09:37:57 pm »
I...just...what?! This place is still here?

Last I was here everything was grinding to a halt. It was dead. CalcHaven just died too. I was there when it fell, then when it rose again, then fell for real. But I'm pretty sure those posts say they were posted today.
Jesus Christ. (Was that a joke?)

This is the same place, right? I remember Rivereye was there and Jc too and some guy trying to port Pokemon to the TI83 and some roguelike RPG game. I sound like Dorothy waking up in Kansas, don't I?

So, umm...Hi there. New face. New name. Don't feel like disclosing my old one because I was an immature jerk. Regeneration, har har. (The account doesn't seem to be here. New board?)
Man, it's been...4 years? A bit less, maybe. I think I'm rambling.

I was not around for the old board, so I don't know any of the older, less active members, but Welcome back to Omnimaga!  Activity has picked up greatly lately and I hope you will enjoy your stay here!

calcdude84se...you sound familiar.
...
...I got nothing.

So I assume avatars and sigs and stuff only become available after so many posts, correct?

You confuse me with calc84maniac :P
I myself am relatively new.

Hi, it is effectively a new board. It was restarted from scratch on August 25th 2008 (although the re-opening itself was never announced anywhere.)

I am a bit curious who you might be, actually. Unless you were ever banned on this incarnation of Omnimaga (meaning after the actual August 25th 2008 date, since all the forum-based bans from the Invisionfree/ZB forums were reset at the time), welcome back. I still remember the Calchaven board. I was active there for a while, then something happened, but I don't remember. Then they moved to IPB and it slowly died. As for Omnimaga, I'm happy that things went back on track around 2009. We didn't have much issues since then and it seems people are focusing again on calc development (if you check ticalc.org, you'll notice the increase in featured programs, even if we exclude the 3 programs from years ago). As for the site activity, it went up quite a bit compared to the old board, although it was a bit higher a few months ago, since a bunch of people are away with no internet right now

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay and contribute to the community :)

And yeah Calcdude84se is a different person. Calc84maniac is still around. He was the guy who made that basic raycaster as well as grayscale minesweeper. Now he made a Gameboy emu for the 84+ and a GBC one for the Nspire. He was working on a Mario and F-Zero clone, but I'm not sure if those are still alive. I remember we also had a member called Calc84 in the very last days of the old Invisionfree board :P (Calc84maniac uses his nickname on IRC).

Btw, our apologies for the inconveniences of not being able to use avatars until you reach 1 post (excluding Intro/Randomness) or any profile editing. It is a spambot protection, as bots kept putting porn links in their sig, potentially harming curious members who might click. For sending PMs you need 5 posts and the chatroom 20 (although you can just use IRC and connect to #omnimaga on EFnet). The intro and randomness sections have post counts disabled because people abused them to raise their post count and later boasted about them.

Welcome back whoever you are! I don't know if I knew you from before. You are no longer the you that you were before you became the you that you are now. Anyhow, have some peanuts on us!

DJ Omnimaga! Hello! I assure you it's been years since I've been here.

Honestly, I'd rather not be associated with my old name for (1) it's a terrible name that younger me thought was a good idea and (2) after taking a look at what immature me had to say on CalcHaven I just want to leave that behind. New name, new me, y'know?

Now I could've sworn there was a user named *something*84se.

Aaah I see, well I hope you enjoy your stay in the community anyway.

DO you still do some calc programming, btw?

And nope, we didn't have a 84se user :(, Calcdude84se joined UTI in late 2008 then Omnimaga in 2010. Calc84maniac joined Cemetech around 2006 and Omni in 2007 and the other Calc84 guy joined in December 2007, I think (the final month the old board was up).

Calc programming...I was doing an exploration-RPG-ish thing in Basic when I left, but that totally fell through. Bit off a bit more than I could chew, I suppose.
I've just been making little mini games during math class, button mashers and hangman and whatnot. Considering I've got some free time the rest of the summer and pretty much already did the first half of my Calc class this upcoming term I might start a new project. I'm giving it some thought.

As for the mysterious 84se, looks like I'm just misremembering. It's not like 84 SE is an uncommon term around here.

True, plus it seems like there are much less 83+ users than there used to now.

As for project, since this new board started, I try to make sure members won't start too huge on their first projects, because I remember back in the days, a lot of people did and then gave up. I try to not discourage them from programming, though. I did start too big once, with the very first ROL4 project, back when I was Epic Programming Studio staff, and it never went further than a walking engine and battles mock ups x.x

Also in 2005-08, there was a big misconception in the TI community: in people eyes, it seemed like everything was accomplished so they were no longer trying anything new anymore, even with xLIB around. Even in ASM it seemed like people thought the farthest you could go to was Lost Legends 1. Now calc84maniac proven people wrong with F-Zero, a GB emu and other stuff, and BrandonW kept releasing hacks and tools that did all sort of fancy things. And BASIC programmers finally got two good alternatives if they want a fast but not too hard language programmable on-calc: BBC Basic and Axe Parser. The first one has a non-user-friendly editor, though, and requires that the massive app is on the calc to run games made with it. Because of the editor, the language never got as popular as the more recent Axe Parser (which uses the TI-BASIC editor, SourceCoder or TI-Graph Link to edit source code) and compile programs into ASM. It gives more choice to programmers. This is not to mention the new tricks discovered for BASIC programmers like Text(-1, dual-layer ASCII and other stuff.

Welcome here! Hope you enjoy your stay. You should find ztrumpet's Homescreen Game Pack thread and maybe post some of those mini games and maybe he might find them useful :) Can't wait to see what ya come up with.
