Title: This is me introducing myself, as directed by the name of this board.
Post by: ZippyDee on March 26, 2011, 06:44:09 am
Hey everyone! I'm Zippy. Or Taw. Either one.

I love words.
Words are awesome.
Anathema. Putrid. Spackle. Dank. Elbow. Gaggle. Pundit. Vivacious.....

You may look at words like that and just say "Okay...those are words. Cool story." But I look at words and see things like this:
STARTLING
STARTING
STARING
STRING
STING
SING
SIN
IN
I

Remove one letter each time and it is STILL a real word. Isn't that awesome?

Or how about this:
Therein, Therein, Therein, Therein, Therein, Therein, Therein, Therein, Therein, Therein, Therein.
All those words can be seen without rearranging any letters.
SO AWESOME.
Even just thinking about every-day words is awesome. Words like "banana" and "floss."

But enough about words, I've barely introduced myself! :P

I'm Zippy/Taw (as you already know), I'm a nerd (As you probably guessed), and I'm perfectly fine with that fact. :)
I like people. I like to talk. And I love talking to people...
I have ADHD and Tourette's Syndrome, along with a few other minor things, but hey, we all have our issues, right?
I like math. I hate math classes. I love to learn. I hate the educational system.
I love thinking. Specifically problem solving.

My love for learning inspires me to try all sorts of things, leading to the smorgasbord of activities and ideas that I refer to as my interests.

Programming, problem solving, psychology, building things, playing music, composing music, singing, acting, dancing, drawing, painting, marching band, colorguard, writing, stilt-walking, juggling, spinning poi, gymnastics, aerial acrobatics, teaching things to people, laughing, dreaming, meeting new people, just generally being around people, telling jokes (usually bad puns or obnoxiously witty remarks), correcting spelling/grammar, and obviously a lot more things.

I'm 18, I graduated high school a year ago, but I'm taking a year off before college. I am currently dancing 13 hours a week doing Jazz, Lyrical, Ballet, Ballroom, Hip-Hop, Breaking, and Popping/Locking. This year I'm dancing competitively in Jazz, Ballroom, Hip-Hop, and Popping/Locking.

I'm a self-taught programmer with plans to take actual CS courses in college. I started with VB4 when I was 7 (looking back at that always makes me laugh), then I learned Flash ActionScript 2.0, then 3.0, then TI-BASIC, then a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittle bit of z80 ASM, then Java, then 4 days ago I started poking around with Axe, and now I'm here. :D

I play a lot of instruments. I won't list them all right now, but if you really want I can tell you.

I teach at a circus camp in the summer, hence the stilt-walking, juggling, poi, gymnastics, and aerial acrobatics in my list of interests.

I'm one of those people who starts a bunch of projects but is conveniently too ambitious to finish any of them before starting more and completely forgetting about the old ones. I wish that wasn't the case, but oh well.

That's basically me. If you have any questions about me or even about anything really, I'll be happy to answer them, at least to the best of my knowledge.
Glad to be on the forums :D

My apologies for writing so much,
-Zippy Dee

Also the longest word is the longest molecule chain, which would probably be some derivation of DNA. But the REAL longest word must be in English :P

Why do I feel attracted to you(as a friend)?
Maybe its because we have similar ideas: I like singing(but I don't know if I can), I like drawing, I like programming.
And when I'm busy on a project I start already thinking ideas for my next project.
I hope you will become a nice member on this forum. :)

What part do you have Tourette's Syndrome in?
In order to be diagnosed with Tourette's Syndrome, you have to have at least one motor tic, and at least one oral/vocal tic. For those who don't know, a tic is a (pseudo)involuntary movement or sound. That's a simple explanation, but it's more complex than that. Like...When you're lying down and about to fall asleep, then suddenly your leg spasms....that's not a tic. Sorry. You don't have a tic disorder because of that. :P

A majority of the time motor tics are facial tics, and a majority of THAT is eyes and eyebrows. The reason for that being that facial expressions are pseudo-involuntary actions. You CAN voluntarily move your facial muscles to make an expression, but every time something makes you upset, or happy, or surprised, small (and sometimes large) changes occur in your expression involuntarily. Therefore, pseudo-involuntary muscle movements are the easiest target, so to speak, for tic disorders. Another example of a pseudo-involuntary muscle is your diaphragm. Do you consciously breathe in and out every minute of every day? I hope not...Otherwise it sucks to be you. Diaphragm-related tics are qualified usually as vocal/oral tics, because they relate to passing of air and usually also involve making sounds.

My exact tics change all the time. They also fluctuate in severity depending on multiple factors, a lot of which is stress or stress-related.

What my tics generally consist of: Raising/furrowing eyebrows, closing my eyes tight for a second or so, blinking, wrinkling my nose, tensing a smile for a second or so, coughing (this one shows up the most often after I just get over a cold and have an actual cough, then the real cough goes away and is replaced by a tic), exhaling sharply, small inhaling and/or exhaling grunts, same as previous only higher pitched, clicking my tongue, stretching my neck (like when you see someone trying to crack their neck. This one ends up hurting like a BITCH after the first hour, but I can't stop. Tough life :P )

As I said, they change (maybe "cycle" is a better word?) all the time, so those are just examples of tics I've had.

WHAT MY TICS DO NOT CONSIST OF: Swearing, saying any words even at all, violent spastic movements.
Verbal tics (not the same as vocal) are part of what's know as Coprolalia. Only about 10% of people with Tourette's have Coprolalia. Sadly, around 85% of those people have swearing as their verbal tic(s). Why? Because swear words are the simplest words for your language processing center to use. Think about it: you smash your thumb accidentally while trying to hammer in a nail and often the first thing that comes to mind is a swear word of some kind. Swear words used in that sense (meaning used as exclamations) are effectively definition-less. They're basically a quick-access route through your language processing center for your brain to say "STRONG EMOTIONAL OR PHYSICAL DISCOMFORT!!!"

Sadly, these people are also the ones that you usually see on TV, because of their "freak show" factor. I hope reading this has made you more aware (if you were not already) of the REAL Tourette's Syndrome, and not just the Tourette's Syndrome shown to you by the media.

One last note on my Tourette's: I have taught myself to disguise almost all of my tics into my daily speech patterns and expressions. If I hadn't told you I had Tourette's, you would never have known.

My favorite word, just cause it is so long: pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis
That was originally my thread name, but I changed it so I wouldn't seem like one of those people who uses big words just to make people feel stupid...

5 consecutive vowels. Great word for Hangman. Kind of like Sequoia (which contains all 5 vowels) or Syzygy (I'm not even going to explain why this one's good for hangman).

My opinion of Tourette's Syndrome.

90% diagnosed with Tourette's Syndrome actually have it.
9% of people Tourette's Syndrome actually had a spinal injury causing the same symptoms. (I fall into this category)
<1% found the episode of south park found it funny, though they pretend to have compulsive swearing

I had Raising/furrowing eyebrows and wrinkling my nose, closing my eyes tight for a second or so, blinking, grunts, bad twitches in my neck.
After several weeks with my chiropractor, most of the conditions are gone, and I am able to suppress the ones that aren't.

Have you ever been in an accident that involved your neck/ spine.  Such as a bike accident?

I like how it comes from de, meaning down, and fenestrus, -i, meaning window.  :P

When you say suppress, do you mean completely? Or temporarily. Because if it's an actual tic disorder, then suppressing is only a temporary solution. The only way to stop ticing is to tic.

The best word for hangman is lynx.

In my experience, nobody has been able to solve it without giving the hangman new shoes and some shiny sunglasses.

Post by: ZippyDee on March 28, 2011, 05:37:40 am
Yeah, like fighting a sneeze.
Many people use this as an example. I don't agree with this. There's a point at which you literally cannot stop yourself from sneezing, just before it starts. With tics, that point comes as soon as you start ticing. Because of this, I usually liken it to a cough. Ever have that feeling like you really have to cough, but you hold it in, and it just builds up in your chest, and creeps up to the back of your throat until you can't hold it in any more and you have to let it out? That's what it's like. You CAN hold it in, but the longer you hold it in, the worse the feeling gets. The only way to make the pressure go away is to let the tics come out. I say "tics" instead of "tic" because it often ends up being more than you thought it was.

Lol no, there's a point where you physically can't hold pee in any longer too, no matter how much you want to. With this you CAN hold it in, but it just feels AWFUL.

Well, if you hold pee in too long, there's a chance it may go back into the kidneys. This is called renal reflux and it can cause serious kidney damage.

Is it just something about quality? It seems to remind me how VHS recordable tapes could be recorded in SP, LP and EP mode, but in EP mode it was a bit blurrier and quality would degrade from a VCR to another and sometimes colors would change at the top of the screen.

If I remember correctly, LPs were the first records to have multiple tracks on them. You basically had a single, or an LP. But LPs ran at a slower rpm (33)than singles (45), so EPs were released to compete with LPs. Like singles, they ran at 45 rpm but they usually held 2-3 (in rare cases 4) songs per side, while LPs could hold a full album.

I asked my dad (who was around back then) and an EP was 7" and held 4 songs, 2 on each side. An LP was 12", and held 10-12 songs, half on each side.

Post by: ZippyDee on March 31, 2011, 01:04:22 am
Yeah. As I said, EPs held 2-3 songs per side (meaning 4-6 total), while LPs held entire albums.

So you have 99 posts already, but hello! The way you play with words is pretty similar to how I play with numbers ^_^ I have a form of synesthesia that makes numbers have colors, feelings, and physical shapes and locations. I cannot really think off the numbers the match the feeling, but if I think of a numbers, I usually get a feeling ^_^
Hehe, I just changed my profile pic ♥
