Hello!

As you may have seen on tiplanet.org, SirCmpwn is working again on KnightOS.

(Please, don't talk about SirCmpwn, talk about KnightOS...)


There's an effort to translate KnightOS into various languages.

On TI Planet, we are working to translate it in french, but if you would have your KnightOS in your langage, you can translate it yourself now :)

I personnally make the charset with him, and we have incorpored accentued letters like "é", "à", etc...

 If you are interested in, SirCmpwn can create a special tree for your langage, and you are free to fork this tree to translate it. :)

That is nice to hear that it's still active. I heard that it was a while ago but I wasn't sure how much. Glad there will be a French translation. Will it be problematic to translate before completion, though? I am concerned that if most stuff constantly changes that it will be a lot more work to start translating it before it's finished or in beta stages than it would be if the translation started once KOS is finished and guaranteed to not have signifiant vocabulary changes anymore.

Yeah I heard, first SirCmpwn temporarly hopped on IRC to say the project's still alive a while ago (yeah he's banned, but as persalteas said, please don't talk about this, but the project), then it made the news on TI-Planet... So yeah, glad to hear it's not dead.

seeing a complete third-party OS is the last big thing that still hasn't been completed for the 8x series.

I remember how KOS looked, and to me I felt like it was too graphical for the TI series.  But it is nice that is being worked on.  I'd still like to see OS2 be completed (or even worked on).

Will it be problematic to translate before completion, though? We are tranlating the kernel only, the big menu, the settings menu, etc...

All Programs for KOS are still indev, we don't translate them (the calendar, maybe a program interpreter, linking, etc...)
In 1 hour Adriweb has finished the french translation, to show you it's very fast.

So, anybody for German, Spanish,  japanese, klingoln ? (You may add chars in the character set, no problem :D )

I can do/help with Spanish. No Klingon, though, sorry. Do you have a link to the article on TI Planet ? Ah, the most recent post (http://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=130934). I really have no idea how to use these sorts of sites, though, (i have no idea what a pull request is, for example) but i can provide the translations.

The principal author (SirCmpwn) has his files uploaded on his account.

You can copy those files to YOUR account by clicking the button "Fork" when you are on his page.

Then, you can modify files in your account.
When it's done, click the "pull request" button to indicate him you want to merge your code with his code.

You should verify that he hasn't made any update between the moment you forked and the moment you want to merge the codes.

SirCmpwn can accept or not to merge, and changes are applied.

How do i ask questions about what exactly is meant? For example, "Running Programs" can be either a list of programs that are running: "Programas ejecutándose" or a state: "Ejecutando programas". I've finished translating everything (to anyone else thinking about it: it's really not much, it took me maybe ten minutes).

EDIT: So first he needs to add an "Es" folder before i can upload the translations?

There is probably an old topic floating around here somewhere. I'm pretty sure it was also hosted on googlecode or something similar, but I don't have a link. You could also check on TI-Planet, as it seems there is some discussion going on about it there.

It's actually the 2nd calc OS in terms of how far it progressed so far. It stalled for a while so GlassOS became first but now that KOS resumed I guess they might eventually be even depending of how fast they progress. Hopefully there is good compatibility between both for ASM programs. (and backward compatibility with some TI-OS games)

You should make an account on GitHub and make a "fork" of KnightOS. It took me a while to figure it out since i've never used git/github before, so here's what i did:
1. You need "git (http://git-scm.com/downloads)" installed.
2. Make an account on github.com (http://github.com), and click "fork" on the KnightOS (https://github.com/SirCmpwn/KnightOS/) github page.
3. Choose a directory for the project to go into (it will create a directory called KnightOS there)
4. From the terminal/command prompt: "git clone [address of your cloned project]". For me, this was "git clone https://github.com/chickendude/KnightOS/"
5. Go into the lang folder and create a folder with your language name (nl_be, de, es, etc.) and copy your translated files. Make sure they are encoded in ANSI (Windows-1252) (not UTF-8 or some other format). I think files written in Notepad are ANSI by default.
6. From the terminal "git commit"
7. Again, from the terminal "git push". You will need to type in your username followed by your password, and it will upload your changes to your fork.
8. Now all you have to do is log on to github, go to your KnightOS fork, and make a pull request (there's a button above the project that says "Make a pull request") and you're done.

It took me a while to figure it out, but once you get everything figured out altogether it takes less than a minute from the initial download of the project to the final push. In the future, when updating your files, just go into your KnightOS git project directory and run "get pull" to make sure there haven't been any changes since you last updated. There are also some GUIs, but i couldn't figure out how to get any of them to "push" the changes to the internet :/

Again, make sure that the files are ANSI formatted!

I'd be more than happy to help anyone who's having trouble :)

You can download the sources of KnightOS here: https://github.com/SirCmpwn/KnightOS (clic "Downloads")

In the "build" folder, you can create a launch.bat file

and run it.

It will create OSes and ROMs (to emulate it) for each calculator. (TI-73, TI 83+, TI 83+SE, TI-84+, TI-84+SE)


LINUX AND MAC:

I got to the git commit, then suddenly this window appears and I don't know how to save or confirm or do whatever I'm supposed to do

Try pressing ESC and typing ":wq" and see if that works...

that's vim, a text editor. you need to type in a commit message on one of the lines that isn't commented out by a #, press [shift]+[:], and then type wq (write and quit).

EDIT: oh, and to type things in, you'll need to move the cursor to the spot where you want to start, hit a letter key once to enter insert mode, type what you want, and hit esc (there's probably a better way to do this, but i don't use vi/m)
