Title: What do you want the most in future KnightOS ?
Post by: Matrefeytontias on May 29, 2014, 01:35:16 pm
That lets us KOS developers know what to focus on !

Note that's only for a hypothetic far future though, don't expect any of this implemented any time soon.

If you have any questions on what does what, please ask !

Voted for the thread stuff and sass rewrite. Everything below is useless. :P The rest would be nice but less of a priority right now.
Also, are you subscribed to the mailing list ?

Being able to send it to my calc with tilp >:(
Ok, I know that that isn't a KOS issue :P

All I want is a math program. Of course, this is a math calculator

Axe parser with a dynamic library system. Is that possible? :D

I haven't had time to try it out yet but ordelore said it needed a math program, and it is a calculator.

As you cleverly noted, it's a calculator, so the math app will be implemented before any major release is done. This topic discusses of the far future.

Well, KnightOS will have an official programming language, kpy, inspired from Python. We won't rewrite the Axe Parser for KOS, but if someone does, pray that he will support dynamic libraries :P if you really want dynamic libs, you can still program in ASM, KOS supports them natively.

Seeing as how I only have a +C, you probably can figure out what I voted :P
Anyway, looking forward to the release of this, assuming it's going to be fully compatible with the +CSE!
(By the way, when I said I could test, when do you want me to start?)

It will be fully compatible with the CSE, that's something we really want to do. However, as we think that there are more important things, that's not the main focus. So you can start testing things by now and report issues, but they won't be resolved that soon if we're already working on something else.

KnightOS already supports libraries and SirCmpwn would like to see Axe ported. It will depend on Runer though. And I think it will have to wait for Axe 2.0.

There is something that I find weird in that poll.
"TIOS dual boot"
"KnightOS as a TIOS app"
But the second one kind of implies the other, so if you can make KnightOS as a TIOS app, why not just put the option "KnightOS as a TIOS app (allows dual-booting)" and remove the "TIOS dual boot" option ? Except if it is easier to make a dual booting system than to make KnightOS as an app, but that would surprise me.

Anyway, I voted for "TIOS dual boot" because
1) I don't see the point of something that makes my calculator do everything but calculations (yeah, yeah, a CAS is planned, nothing prevents anyone from writing a math program, etc, but see also the second point).
2) I don't really want to see all that work go to waste due to thousands od thousands of programs currently available on ticalc not being compatible with this OS (including the Axe Parser of course).

Well, I just tried out KnightOS for the the CSE. I like it, but I am dissapointed that it doesn't have color and it is just the TI 84 version.

It supports color. Only that the castle and other programs use legacy mode because they were not adapted yet.

Also Hayleia, TIOS dual boot is going to be pretty hard. It will require a patched OS and will only be interesting for SE users. For the math stuff, it's high priority in the list as far as I know. Floating point only for now (we need Xeda to port her routines to start working on KPy).

I think the app is a good idea as long as it doesn't take up all the archive.
I still don't really want to get rid of the TI OS so the app could be useful.

Wouldn't dual booting let you use more of the hardware than an app?

Probably. You wouldn't have to worry about using things that would need to be restored when exiting the app. But since that is a choice in the poll, it means that it is possible to make it an app, and if it is possible, why make a dual boot (I don't even know how) if you can just make an app ?

For CSE mode, what would be nice is if we could use 160x240 mode as an option for the main UI and most basic softwares like program editors. It would be much faster to type text and scroll though code.

Good idea. I will ask what is the status of that. Legacy mode probably use it.

By the way, the nightly builds include emulation-ready ROMs. So you don't need to "sacrifice" a calculator for testing. I do it because I can and because hardware is more awesome. :P
