Title: Calculus AB in Short
Post by: pimathbrainiac on March 06, 2013, 03:25:15 pm
Soooo... my calc class ended all new stuffs with IBP ;D

Here is my (totally NOT objective version of calc AB)

So you start out learning about limits and stuff (Easy, right? Been doing that since algebra II)

And then you get to the limit definition of a derivative: lim(dx->0) | (f(x+dx)-f(x))/(dx)
It was in hindsight, easy, but seemed hard at the time

Then we learned power rule (dropping the power, reducing the power, etc.) (made life easy for about a day)

Then product rule (easy), then quotient rule (OMG HARD TO REMEMBER), then chain rule (thank you calc teacher for making stuff easier!)

Then trig derivative stuffs (medium difficulty), Then inverse trig (OMG HARD again), then safety until...

Spoiler For until:
RELATED RATES!!!
(the calculus devil in disguise)

Then optimization (hard, but sooooo much easier than the previous)

Then powers/logs in derivatives (okay, just another formula)

Then we go away for winter break...

(to be continued in 2 days (reduced form of 2 weeks anticipation))

The quotient rule is the hardest thing to remember for me. I can hardly tell whether d/dx (f/g) is (gf'-fg')/g^2 or (fg'-gf')/g^2. (It's the former.)
Related rates may sound hard at first, but if you know how it works and you can recognize a problem, then it gets easier.

I never learned the quotient rule personally(BC Calc) I just used the chain rule and product rule.
Related rates weren't too hard for me as you just have to be able to see where the various things fit together and then just write and solve the equations with the chain rule.

You didn't have a teacher who's related rates test EVERYONE FAILED

Really, everyone failed the related rates test?

Yup... the process is simple, but the teacher put REALLY complicated problems with REALLY complicated computations on it (no calcs allowed, folks!)

Even you? Every living soul in class?

Quotient rule is extremely easy for us (me and classmates)

The easiest way we've found to remember is by saying it like this.
(Say in southern drawl)
Low D-High, Minus High D-Low, All over Low Square.

Its got a pattern to it like the quadratic formula to the Jack-in-a-box tune

I started to get confused with all the rules for dirivatives and integrals.....

Yup... everyone

I have found that my favorite is area dealing with curves. And I really disliked the anti-derivative portion.

I love Calc :D,  In BC independently, and it gets better :)

As a review project, we are getting in groups and doing a video over a topic assigned to us (integrals)

We're doing a parody of "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader" called "Are You Smarter than a 9th Grader"

I made this topic because I know that we're done learning new stuffs... I hope I can go straight to Calc II/III next year and not do BC... Apparently the teacher is the hardest in the school...

Maybe, like in the topic title, everyone had to be in shorts or even boxers to do it, thus, getting extra points needed to avoid failing the test? :P

lol... The teacher is a genius though, so he doesn't know what "moderately challenging" means... He got a 1600 all three times he took the SAT (back when 1600 was a perfect score)
