Title: Stupid SaT math question
Post by: guy6020665 on December 10, 2010, 07:51:19 pm
Well I took the SAT last week and I found what I think is stupidest question ever on it.

Solve for X
X*1 = 3/5

Isn't the SAT supposed to measure readiness for college?!?! This is more like readiness for 6th grade!!!!

x+2=5 x*2=?

Wow that's almost as bad, what are these test makers thinking?

they're thinking....
HS students are stupid...HS students are stupid... If we know the basic concepts of math.

Admittedly i did have to tutor someone in adding fractions, but i think that the majority of High School students should be able to handle something more advanced than these. If the test is too easy then it won't really show the potential for smarter students.

For those in the US, I assume you're aware of the No child Left behind BS that forces those state tests. On one I had a long time ago, it asked what the name of a rectangular shape with four sides at 90 degress from each other was:

A) Triangle.
B) Circle
C) Rectangle
D) Parallelogram.

But the SAT doesn't qualify as a state test does it? I thought it was produced independently by The College Board.

I believe ETA make question.
Even if the question is that stupid, I don't want them to get rid of that kind of question ::)

Isn't programming just a lot of #s, anyway.
Calc geeks are awesome.  >:D
I lost. Crap.

Yes, ETA are the writers of the SAT (or should we say, they enjoy their nice facilities in Princeston, NJ for 364 days a year and scramble one day a year to make questions so hard so kids can't answer them :P)

The sad part is, I would guess quite a few people got that question wrong. :(

actually they throw in the stupid questions so that people who know nothing else will still get at least a 1 for knowing that...

c+3=6 c+4=?

Post by: Ashbad on December 10, 2010, 08:20:24 pm
well, SAT isn't as bad as a 1.5 hour survey we were REQUIRED to take last year.  basically it asked how many times we fucked with the opposite sex and smoked a long list of many drugs I never heard of before.  and then they asked how REGULARLY we took them.  they had like 10 answers for increments like 1-2 times a week, every few hours etc.  I felt offended I had to take that shit, so I said I had sex no less than 20 times, I never used condoms, I smoked every single drug imaginable every hour, I skip school every day and etc.

of course it was anonymous ;)

I told my dad I did that and he said he thought it was funny as I shouldn't be taking that test anyways.  Apparently he opted me out, but they still made me take it.  So I had fun :D :D :D

ah my old school sucked.  very rich and stuff for a middle school but we even had a police officer roaming the halls even though we havn't had a problem since 2002 (when a fight started and a kid broke his nose)

x = Netham45
x^2 = /me runs!  Lobster Attack!

Americans suck at math these days. Geometry especially.

question 1

That question's not too stupid. x is a negative number!  :o You have to square a negative number! Americans easily get confused. And also why is my respect so low?
Title: Re: Stupid SaT math question
Post by: Ashbad on December 10, 2010, 08:59:13 pm
no x = banana which is contrapositive

also many americans may be stupid but remember that's pretty much any country you go.  And there is a population of smart people like yours truly as well, remember that.

your respect might be -4 due to trolling.  Like that comment about americans -- all americans would be offended looking at that...

This. Last time I checked I think it was in the Casio Prizm thread and the Family guy one. I don't remember anything else, though. I have yet to see someone beat the record of -18 on one post, though.

Depends on the American. We still have most of the worlds mathematicians :P

Title: Re: Stupid SaT math question

I think it has to do with the fact it's an highly populated country so you have even more chances to run into someone who fail at math. :P

Over here there are people who can't even read/write. X.x

Well, America has plenty of those people too. Canada and the US are tied in illiteracy rates, so we just have more of them.

Title: Re: Stupid SaT math question
Post by: fb39ca4 on December 11, 2010, 09:23:59 am
Lol, that first question was a fail!
I remember a question I took on the MEAP (Michigan standardizes test) where they mixed up the definition of similar and congruent.
I think these tests are a load of s***, because, at least for math, it's all multiple choice, so they don't know if you really understand the material, or are using a program on your calc :P
And no standardized test is ever going to measurE how good you are at using time wisely, paying attention, etc.
