I decided to compile a list of Minecraft servers, complete with stats. Feel free you add yours :P

EDIT: It thinks it's up right now, but its really not, because my latest addition to nomcraft (map rendering) completely borked it and im still working on fixing it... XD

Could we keep a list for Omni members and the others separate?
Also please also state the schedule for your servers in the list, so we know for example if it's only open until 10 PM or when you are not sleeping.

I fixed NomCraft, so my server's actually not lying when it says it's up, and DJ_O, mine's always up (unless it crashes, then its down till I notice and fix it =P)

What type of server do you guys run? Modded, not modded, Survival or just building?

Mine is a multiworld, with various types of worlds, including creative, survival, hardcore, and challenge. I run one mod, my mod, Nomcraft.

I didn't know a server could have multiple mode? ??? I assume upon joining, you get asked, right? Isn't that even more resource-intensive, though?

Well, the modes are per world. So world_1 might be survival, while THEMOSTAWESOMEWORLDEVAR might be creative =P Challenge mode is special... Anyways, loading multiple worlds is resource intensive, yes, eg, i can not test my mod on my cumputer with the load all worlds at start code in because java crashes with an out of memory error. My server is okay with it though, as i can give it a few GB of RAM to hog =P

I'm hosting a server every so often on eeems.dyndns.org:9006 (http://eeems.dyndns.org:9006)
It's a bukkit server with a whole bunch of mods installed, mainly iConomy and Towny so basically you can own land etc :)
I'm hoping to get it a more permanent host later on and maybe make it an official Omnimaga server or something ;)

You can't cause havoc due to Towny :P You can't mess with stuff if it isn't yours or the wild :P
I may lag a little right now due to only having 2.5MB/s upload but when I get a better server for it, that shouldn't be an issue.

Mainly because I tend to die too often to get any decent amount of money to buy plots :P

I personally never liked playing MC in survival mode, becuase what I find the most fun in the game is building stuff and the creative part of it. I hate it when I spend weeks acquiring diamond and a lot of other items only to lose everything just because a mob mysteriously appeared out of nowhere in my back or by accidentally falling somewhere.

Ok, so the server is no longer on my laptop, it's now on withg.us.to on port 25565 :) It should be up in a little while.

On IRC, there were talks about making an universal server for Omni. Is that going to be the one and will it have multiple modes? It seems multiple modes is why people remain separate, as we cannot satisfy everyone with one single member. However will the VPS have enough RAM?

Multiple modes? So like gamemodes ( creative vs survival ). This server will be survival and there will be land that people can buy etc ( There already is land you can buy and still lots of open plots ;) )
The vps should have enough ram for now, as long as nobody goes and explores too far. I might break down and buy my own host later.
I know people want creative mode etc, but this will not have creative mode ( Except for a few things for making the initial 3 plots ) because I like being legit, and then the money is actually useful for something other then buying plots. I still have to talk to more admins about making this an official server though ;P

Ok but does mobs constantly destroy your stuff? Also by multiple I meant what we were discussing earlier on IRC: Having a part of the map be survival and the other creative. And I understand why you want to play legit. I just don't enjoy losing 1 week of items/blocks everytime, as I feel like I am wasting my time. Are there any tricks to store stuff you found without losing it everytime you die?
Also please no MC server on Netham45 server lol. It already has enough downtimes lately. :P

The issue is with memory and CPU usage. Most, if not all VPS hosts forbid constant maxing out of the CPU(s), since the VPS shares CPUs on the host (hardware) server.
You either can get a dedicated server (kinda expensive) or a "dedicated Minecraft server" (cheap, but I'm not sure how much control you can actually get).
If anyone can come up with around $38/month (29 euros), I can get this cheap dedi which should be sufficient for a MC server:

As for a Minecraft dedicated server, depending on amount of RAM and players, it can cost from $7.99 to $29.99 per month:

Cooliojazz also has a VPS, which allows maxing out of resources. He uses x10vps, which prices from $24.95 to $47.95 depending on specs:

mobs can't destroy stuff in the town, explosion/fire damage is off. Also only you can edit stuff on your plot

Update: Switched from Minequery to the query system that comes with Minecraft, just set enable-query to true in server.properties.

Juju, you should take my server off of that list, because at least for now, my minecraft server (the entire server for that matter) is going down. Maybe forever, we'll just have to see how UP turns out =P

Took a look and had to make my mind with the strange permission system.
For example, I went to a random region and in the entrance of what looked like a Castle with a sandgate, I came accidently through it, I was not able to break the block that was in my head because of the permissions, suffocating and dying... losing the startup item (good idea tho)

As far as I could tell with a quick look at the topic, nobody said buying minecraft was stupid. Buying something and supporting the developers is never stupid. The only reason I condone pirating a game is because there is no demo of it for you to try out, either that or you can't afford it yet. Even then I'm only ok with it if you decide it's something you want to keep and then find some way to pay the developer for their work.

Yep still staff, cause im always around somewhere to help if im called upon.. well "around".

Yeah, I took it down about a month ago because I wasn't really motivated to maintain a server anymore. I stopped playing minecraft, and then decided to stop paying for it if I wouldn't use it myself. D:

But in terms of calcs... Maybe I'll do some more ndless this year.
