Title: Minecraft Recruiting
Post by: saintrunner on January 25, 2014, 03:18:13 pm
Hello! It's been a long time so I understand if you don't remember me, but if you do I still send a general GREETINGS!

It's been probably almost 2 years since I last visited Omnimaga due to life complications and schedules, but I have been nevertheless busy. Currently, myself and two other former Omnimagians, BinderNews and ThunderMagnet have been running a minecraft server. Under recent events we find our selves searching for new members to increase population. After a quick meeting with Binder and Thunder, we have decided a general invitation to all our old friends from Omnimaga would be a nice gesture :) And so I send a WARM HELLO and an IP address to the Vortexel Minecraft server. 198.24.171.34:25600

Thanks much and I hope to meet back up with a few old friends from the Omni Community :)

Formally,
saint

p.s.
I do recall there being several rules as to posts and such on the forum so I apologize if I miss categorized or failed to properly do something. :)

2. You have some grammar errors. Go back and fix them.

3. This is spam and doesn't belong in this forum. Go somewhere else if you want to advertise your server.

Wow I haven't seen you in a while O.O. I think it has been two years because when you came back for a short while during Summer 2012 I wasn't very active and the next Summer I was kinda busy and not following Minecraft stuff (although more active)

Do you plan to stick around in the Minecraft sections? That said, it might be hard to get many people to your server, since there are already many, including the Cemetech server.

That was rather innapropriate, considering that his grammar isn't that bad, compared to many newer users and some other members, and that he advertised his server in the Minecraft section. Besides, why do you complain about this server advertising in particular and not Kerm's nor any of the other servers advertised here?

(Btw I didn't check your posts much, but after 734 posts, you only have +4 post ratings. Such ratio, which is far lower than Saintrunner's, tells me that we might want to look in your backyard first, before questioning Saintrunner's posting quality. If you are trolling/trying to start fights on the forums, this might be why so few people reply to your project topics.)

@ Bluebear: I don't know who the hell you think you are or what your problem is. If youd like a ban I can easily arrange that.

Make that +3.

Also, the posts that are usually downvoted don't cover my projects, so you can find another explanation.

True. My point, though, is that typically, when an Omnimaga members trolls (or are rude) too often, people tend to be less interested in checking out his work (unless they've been contributing a lot of notable programs for a long time prior trolling, but even then it still happens to a certain extent). This can be problematic if the user wants feedback to a big project, because it generally takes a year or two with no trolling before he finally starts getting attention again (probably the time it takes to rebuild an Omnimaga reputation?).

As a sidenote, someone should calculate the respect:post ratio of some users.

There was http://ourl.ca/9540 a few years ago, but the guy left since then and the thread is in spam anyway. Of course an automated tool would be nice, providing that it calculates from every post in the database, not just the postcount (else this would result into some divisions by zero from people who only post in the intro section)

Anyway, this is kinda off-topic, so it might be best to move the discussion into another thread if we are gonna keep going. :P

I don't play MineCraft (yet :P) but if I ever start, I think I'd be looking for a server to play with people (seems like playing alone is less fun) so I'll have yours in mind :)

How you act when you aren't talking about your projects shows if you are a good fit for this community or not. Trolling and being rude is very explicitly against the rules.

On another note, nothing related to Minecraft should really fit in Omnimaga either. It's a distraction from programming calculators and most other activities, and some users can't control their playing.

Hello all, I'm so glad I seem to be (for the most part) remembered. I never intended this to seem spam like, and it is more of a friendly invitation then advertisement and I assumed being in the general minecraft discussion it would be alright. I apologize for the conflict.

Info on the server:
It is currently being run similar to and mmorpg, utilizing MCMMO complete with factions, shops, and most fun war. I do ask if you do decide to grace the server with your presence, to find the rule board or ask in chat the rules for the server as we are diligently trying to minimize griefing and other inappropriate actions. As it is designed to be a fun entertaining community we would really enjoy seeing new faces :)

As far as staying around Omni, I haven't touched code in quite a while however I do feel it is due time to finish a few projects I once began. Zelda was always interesting

Glad to see you all

Anything fits in any forum if there is an appropriate subforum.
Moreover, sorry for clichés, but coders are usually geeks and geeks are usually gamers so it is not surprising to have people here who play games and want to share their experiences with others.

True, but games take time from coding.

Unfortunately, Omnimaga is not very strictly devoted to calculators. In fact, it is less so than other sites. We do computer programming and music among other things. Primarily, we make and play games and those games have inspired a number of programs.

I see it that Omnimaga is a dynamic community, it just happens to be that the main focus currentley is on calculators, but that doesn't mean that anything else would be diss-allowed.

Doesn't mean everything else would be allowed either.
But this detracts from the main focus.

I think what Sorunome is trying to say is that omnimaga isnt simply a coding community and that there is no "main focus". I dont see how minecraft is at all off topic here. If you think it is, maybe you havent noticed that probably close to 50% of the threads here are not coding related at all.

I recall the days where there were just as many music posts as code posts. One of the reasons I loved Omnimaga was the community and its acceptance of people who all shared a common themes. Calculators, gaming, computers, music. Either way I would appreciate this topic to travel more in the direction of being relevant to its topic. If you have questions about the server, minecraft, or just want to say hello to me (I'd love to catch up with a few of you) then this is the spot to do so.

blue_bear_94: I apologize for any disturbance this topic causes for you as you code.

Omnimaga is suppose to be a safe place for people to learn with each other. It doesn't have to be programming, it can be music or playing games. I'm going to have to update our mission statement when we do the 2.x upgrade to the forum.

The Minecraft sub-forum is here for a reason :P. Kinda like how Cemetech has plenty of hardware/computer stuff to keep the older users around for longer. It's not like the Omnimaga admins will delete the Minecraft sub-forums (and perhaps every other non-calc sub-forum just to please one person and anger many others)

I recall the days where there were just as many music posts as code posts.
Fun fact: during Summer 2008, Omnimaga almost became entirely a music creation website. That was until Netham and Necro started begging non-stop for a revival of the TI/Computer programming team.

It really has been AGES since I've been here...  saintrunner told me he posted here, and I was like "Hey!  I haven't been there in a long time!  Need to go check in!"

So here I am checking in and saying hello, to everyone.  Woot woot!   ;D

Yep.  I've funded the server for quite awhile, and saint just started helping me out a bit.  Since there is a small lack in people, I have just been expanding spawn...

Yup.  Good stuff!

Hope to see y'all there!

I think it would be cool to see other types of programming :D. And I know that I'm definitely not the only person that does non-calc coding as well(not what I'm saying either). But it can go without a doubt that there is not a lot of non-calc coding here.

Then again it is mainly calculator forum currently, so what should I expect? X|

Anyway, back on topic. Now that I have nothing else to do(except finish coding 3 games), Minecraft would be a great source of relaxation.

Title: Re: Minecraft Recruiting
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 02, 2014, 09:15:39 pm
The mission statement states the following:

Quote
Omnimaga is a website dedicated to TI and Casio calculator and PC game programming and music creation of any kind. Aside from our programming team products, the download section also provides TI games and programming tools uploaded by regular forum members and an older section containing the best community-contributed RPGs ever made for any brand of graphing calculators (TI, Casio and HP), including some very rare ones. It is also the home of major TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus products such as Axe Parser on-calc compiled language, the Game Boy emulator TI-Boy SE and TI-Nspire programs such as Ndless, which allows ASM and C programs to be executed on this series of calculator, and gbc4nspire, a GBC emulator.

Our community goal is to provide a discussion environment free of any hostility for all coders wanting to learn, give or get help, showcase their work, discuss and have fun. We and the members also have promising game and utility projects coming along, calculator game walkthroughs and programming help available on the forums.

Register today if you haven't already to contribute and we hope you enjoy your stay!

I guess that what could be added is "other technology and gaming-related topics", since we already have computer programming, and HP calcs, due to the arrival of the HP Prime. Otherwise, most stuff seems fine to me for the time being and the mission statement already states that we are supposed to be free of hostility.

However, the current admin interface is made of SMF plus about 30 third-party SMF hacks. Certain of them are several years old and a mega hassle to use when it comes to editing certain site parts. For example, if Eeems decides to edit the forum rules, he has to use TinyMCE to edit an entire bunch of pure HTML in one single line, a software that is not even made by the programmer who wrote the third-party SMF mod, and a lot of stuff is all over the place. That setup was chosen because that was the only solution in 2008, but now that Omni has professional web developers I guess it's time for an overhaul. :P

The SMF 2.0 upgrade will mainly include Omnimaga proprietary hacks/mods plus the SMF software itself and I'M fairly sure that Eeems will make sure that the site is more dynamic instead of static so everything is in sync and the editors will most likely be more convenient to use. The current setup isn't as hard to use as what I've heard from ticalc.org interface (everything is command-prompt or Telnet-based), but I could understand why staff might prefer to wait before editing some parts.

I'll say server auctions are my favorite thing to run, so I put the most time into this than any other room/building.  There is actually a ton of redstone under the floor and around the walls- two different buttons control the lanterns.  Top button will shoot a stream of light around the room, and the bottom button toggles the loop on the floor, making the lights go around and around and around and around...  Yup!  Auction tonight!   ;D

Nice to see/ talk/... well, type to you as well, DJ!

Since I seem to be the one running Vortexel at this time, and this thread seems to be about, well, Vortexel, I'll keep people updated on what's happening around the server.

First, if you decide to get on, I recommend joining around 8:00pm Eastern Time, as this is the peak time of the server for players.

Second, as I enjoy building devious devices that I then suggest/force players to go through (OK, it is optional), I have constructed a maze at spawn, named "Hurricane Maze".  It is 35 by 35, and 7 stories *deep*.  One starts at the top and works their way down.  Did I mention a good portion of the maze was glass?

Third, if you do decide to join us, our IP is mc.vortexel.com but if you have a bad connection, this does not always work properly.  Some people, including me, will (upon joining the server from the game menu) be taken to some random server based out of Israel.  Therefore; I suggest using 198.24.171.34:25600

Great seeing/ talking to/ typing to old faces!

I am amused on how much time I put into making it fun to play on, and only after it goes down does one become interested.

The other main admin, bindernews, is collaborating with me on a potential modded server, still under the name Vortexel, but private.

As for giving the stuff away, I pour my heart into spawn, that is all I ever worked on.  I couldn't part with it.  They would run into the same trouble anyways, no players.

As for visiting every now and then...  Hello!
Server is actually up and running if anyone decides to get on to look around.
