Title: Omnimaga minecraft server
Post by: yrinfish on June 18, 2011, 05:21:25 am
What about an omnimaga minecraft server??

We have to think about a few things then:
Survival or freebuild?
Vanilla or Bukkit?
Who's going to host it?
Whitelist?
Omnimaga-only?

Whoa, a lot of questions!!
I am good with bukkit mods etc, but I can't host it...

If he wants to host it, we would have answered that question!!

hmm, I havent bought it...
So I have to play at a server with online-mode = false.
I know that that's wrong, and I agree, but I have no way to pay for it...

Minecraft Classic is free and it even has multi-player.

I highly recommend you to buy it as online-mode=false is not so cool.

I think Juju's server is very good as it already has a lot of constructions and ways of communicating.

I do play at classic, but beta is more fun, and I do agree, he deserves the money!

You have to buy a domain if you want .com
Title: Re: Omnimaga minecraft server
Post by: Happybobjr on July 04, 2011, 06:37:38 pm
Why can't I host a domain?  How does that stuff actually work?
Title: Re: Omnimaga minecraft server
Post by: AngelFish on July 04, 2011, 06:40:03 pm
You can't host a domain because you don't own a DNS server. If you care to spend a bit building the facilities for one...

Basically, the URL is sent to a root DNS server, which returns the IP address of either the site or another DNS server that would know more about the Query. You pay for the service of having the URL assigned to your site.

Offline servers are a security issue. I could sign on as whoever I wanted on one.

Also, as far as servers go, I started working on an RPG mod for a server (something customized to a specific server) back on 1.2, anyone interested in mayhaps helping me continue it?

My server used to have a /login command so if you set a password you get freezed until you give the right password, therefore solving this security issue.

Why so many minecraft severs? Holy wow there are alot. I say we just pick 1 or 2 for community wise. I have one as well, but its whitelisted and pretty much pure vanilla right now.

I think there was another issue where someone could steal minecraft passwords with the non-authenticating servers.

Well, I kind of prefer Single player, since servers tend to lag so much. However, a private server just for this site, providing it's capable enough to handle 20+ people lag-free, would be pretty nice.

Perhaps there would be a whitelist that includes all members?

How much does it take to run a server with that many? I have a P3 with almost a half gig of ram, but I don't think it can handle it, even with the minimal Debian install it's running. It only runs MC server and FTP.

For 20 people, you need a lot better computer, around a 2ghz dual core, and at least 2gb of memory, but the biggie is internet connection. It needs to be at least 5mbps both ways, download and upload, which will be an issue for people with asymmetric internet connections, the most common type.

My computer eats minecraft server + minecraft client + folding@home + other game for breakfast, but the upload speed on my connection (3mbps) is only good for 10 people which is still quite a lot. Unfortunately, since my family will be moving from an apartment to a house once we buy one, we may ISPs, and/or my parents will only pay for a slower connection speed, so if I make my server available now, I can't guarantee that it will function at the same level a few months from now.

my limiting component is my upload speed.

Yeah, for home Internet connections, ISPs expect people to do a lot more downloading, not run servers, so it is cheaper for them to provide asymmetric connections and not have users complain. For many ISPs, running a server is against their TOS, but they usually don't care if you have a video game server.

I can host it, got a quad core + 4go ram+ 100mb/s, but it would be better to buy a dedicated server :P

I highly doubt thats what he has in the way you are thinking.

I am pretty sure he is talking about link speed, not what his ISP gives him.

Are you sure you are not confusing your internet speed with your local network speed?

I have a server as well, but it can only support like 4-5 people because of my crappy upload speed. But anyone is welcome. However, you won't be able to build or destroy anything until someone makes you a member. You can go around and view the stuff we've built though.

I have a minecraft server, which used to be on withg.us.to, but just got moved a few days ago to unrealphantasies.tk. It runs nomcraft, the mod I wrote (and am still writing, source can actually be found at http://sourceforge.net/projects/nomcraft/ in the svn), which actually adds mostly out of game features atm (eg irc, email type thing, etc). No idea what the capacity is on it, since I just bought the server a couple days ago, and haven't really done any load testing... feel free to join, but try not to mess with people's stuff =P
