Title: Keoni29's music topic
Post by: Keoni29 on June 03, 2011, 06:35:10 am
I make music using FL studio for (pc) games. Have a look at my newground audio submissions:
http://keoni29.newgrounds.com/audio/ (http://keoni29.newgrounds.com/audio/)
Or my soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/koenvanvliet
Or my youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/keoni29

Oh nice you make music too. I'm gonna listen to all songs when I have some time. So far I like some of the ones I listened, like Avoider @purewantfun, due to the fast beat.

I got some of my songs there, but I don't bother anymore because everyone just kept stealing my music...

A lot of them are outdated. I made those when I just learned how to use fl-studio <_<
I'm working on a new 8-bit song :D (Triangle kick sounds neat!!)

Listen on nes emulator :)
The music appears to break around the 9 second mark in Nestopia. Hitting the "Soft reset" does not work but doing a "hard reset" does let me listen to the first 9 seconds again.

Please suggest an emulator that I can use that will work with this.

From the 9 seconds that I've listened to, I find it agreeable and I am saddened that something appeared to go wrong with the emulation.

EDIT: Nope. The music appears to work in Nesticle. I heard something completely different, but that different sound was quite agreeable too. It is nice.

I use fceux. It runs perfectly, but when you have too many applications running the sound lags like hell. I'll try expanding the music buffer

There's also Jnes, I think, which seemed to run more games for me. Else there's Nesticle if your computer is too ancient, but the sound is horrible in it.

Also I like your music :D

This sounds nice, I like the melody a lot. THis one actually reminds me of PCEngine and Sega Megadrive music  for some reasons.

I personally had some songs on Newgrounds, but I quit submitting any, because almost all of them would get rated 2/5 and stuff like that. On Newgrounds people only like mainstream and game music. The minute something sounds a bit different they rate it 0-1

Happens to me all the time, but you know what? I dont give a chainsaw about that! To me newgrounds is just a free host :P
It's not weird that this reminds you of PCengine and Megadrive since they all use FM synthesis to generate sound. I used FM vsti's :)
Title: Re: Keoni29's (8bit) music topic
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on November 19, 2011, 02:00:11 pm
Yeah but I mean it sucks that you'll get 2/5 then a shitty heavy metal song with no drums and horrible sound quality will get 5/5. Since music is sorted by rating, it makes yours even harder to find, and to me, if almost nobody like my style there, I doN,t see why I should waste my time submitting music there, especially that they don't even accept the format I like to use (320 kbps 48 KHz MP3, while they only accept 41 KHz stuff), requiring me extra conversion work. On Youtube I seem to have more fans so I just upload my stuff there instead.

Also Newgrrounds has so many thieves and they do nothing about it, so I tend to have an harder time bothering to support their site. My music was stolen many times before there. (The reason why Omnimaga music downloads section is invisible to guests)

Title: Re: Keoni29's (8bit) music topic
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on November 20, 2011, 02:51:37 pm
That could be a good idea I guess, providing you got a video/pic to put with (although sometimes just text works). So far on Youtube most of my songs got a bunch of likes and between zero and two dislikes. Actually the metal stuff has only one dislike and it's Ride through the 4th dimension. On Newgrounds most of them started around 2/5 and then went around 3/5 to 4/5. I think on  Newgrounds, there is a bunch of people that downrate every new upload on purpose, but even then afterward it seems other people just have no musical taste.

Tales of the Knight of the Moon seems to be doing rather well now, though.

This sounds great. The first one reminds me a lot of SNES music, except without the reverb most SNES games have.

I tried to emulate the sound of the Capcom arcade systems. I have never really played arcade games on the real thing, so I don't really know what it sounds like on the real hardware, but I could eventually add some more reverb.
Title: Re: Keoni29's (8bit) music topic
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on April 28, 2012, 01:39:36 pm
Yeah those might be hard to emulate, since usually you need the real hardware (since it generally only does one single game). From experience, though, a lot of late '80s arcade systems produced sound like http://albion.bandcamp.com/track/fly-without-fear (although with crappier instruments). Not sure how old the Capcom arcade systems are, though, since when I was kid I only went into an arcade once (I think it was in 1994 or something), and my mom didn't like it because of pedophiles roaming there. (I think this is why the arcade was closed down)

So far: The newgrounds stuff is good, but reminds me more of the 16 bit era. I really like Hills, and Rockin your nes. Really good nostalgic tracks there. =D Neonbridge is very nice and nes-like as well. Reminds me a bit of balloon attack, or some of the Mega man to stuff with your drums. ;D
Work in progress 2 is kind Genesis-like, but is a bit too busy IMO. Sometimes it sounds like there is too much going on, and some of the instrument levels could be adjusted so you main melody isn't being over run by the rhythm/background. I still really like the overall sound of the track though. I'll edit and add more thoughts after I look at and listen to the stuff on page 3. =)

*Edit* Ok, the spaceman remix is great. The most recent one you posted may need some adjustments on insturment levels, but not too bad otherwise. ;)

Part of the drums is generated by the computer since the drums on my synth are pcm and they sound do not that great. It's a cheap FM synth with late 80's drum set :P

Cool. I wonder if it will be kinda like melodic or power metal? It would be nice since it would be kinda like some Amiga, Megadrive and to a lesser extent SNES rock music. Something like Albion/DavidXNewton would be nice.

Title: Re: Keoni29's music topic
Post by: Keoni29 on March 12, 2013, 05:04:12 am
It's not easy to make them in nes format and make ot sound right because of the limited number of channels. Potential for anything was one I tried, but the nes does not have enough channels to make it sound as epic as the original.
Title: Re: Keoni29's music topic
Post by: TIfanx1999 on March 12, 2013, 07:17:02 am
I don't know the originals, but I still think yours sounded great. :) You can also use the VRC6 mapper that gives you 3 additional channels( 2 square waves and a sawtooth) for a total of 8 channels.
Title: Re: Keoni29's music topic
Post by: Keoni29 on March 12, 2013, 07:18:24 am
Yeah, but that would take away the original NES feel.

The VCR6 wasn't used in the US releases because the hardware didn't support it. However, the Japanese Famicom did support the VRC 6 (and many other mappers that allowed additional/different channels). Castlevania III utilized this. To me they still sound retro, true to the original nes, and quite good. You should give some of them a listen on youtube. :D

Mad Prototype C64 sounds particularly nice. Same for the Sega-like unnamed song at http://www.omnimaga.org/music-showcase/keoni29's-music-topic/msg343049/#msg343049

However, the Space Ship Shooter music link at http://www.omnimaga.org/music-showcase/keoni29's-music-topic/msg348055/#msg348055 is broken D:

Also I remember http://www.omnimaga.org/music-showcase/keoni29's-music-topic/msg370892/#msg370892 when juju showed me his game a while ago. I liked that song loop :D

The rest including the newer stuff you uploaded sounds pretty interesting too, from what I heard :)

Thanks DJ, it means a lot to me :3

I made a new thing. It was chiptune-ish originally, but I changed the instruments around and added some more including drums.

Interesting. This definitively sounds kinda SNES-like or perhaps Nintendo 64. :)

Yeah that was what I was going for: n64/gba. It has a little bit of a bitcrusher effect on it and the voices are limited to 2 sounds per channel. I wanted it to sound clean.
