Title: 10 million requests, project updates, contests and miscelanneous stuff
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on November 23, 2010, 03:32:16 am
Somewhere a week or two ago, Omnimaga broke 10 million requests, over 20% of which were in the past 2 months. This of course excludes OmnomIRC. After a giant posting spike two weeks ago, forum activity dropped due to most people (including myself) being busy with various things, but there is a tremendous amount of calculator projects (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=ezportal;sa=page;p=4) progressing right now, some which has downloads available.

To tease you, here is one in action below. :P

Make sure to not miss them!

There may also be a new version of Axe Parser coming soon.

In addition to that, Raylin's mini-contests called Cage Matches (http://ourl.ca/7074) are still going on right now. The current battle involves a RPG project using Doors CS7 libraries and TI-BASIC. ASHBAD_ALVIN, one of our many new forum members, is also holding a similar contest (http://ourl.ca/7639), but it involves team projects for the most part. If you are interested, read the first post of each topic for more information.

In other news, Ticalc.org POTY is coming soon, with a tremendous amount of files included in surveys so far. At this rate, this could become the second largest POTY ever, behind 2004. On the Casio side, the Prizm user guide is already available for download in PDF format since at least one or two weeks. If you want to see the new calculator features, such as BASIC programming, you can download it here (http://edu.casio.com/products/cg_series/data/fxcg10_20_E.pdf). Yes, unlike the TI-Nspire, Casio Prizm BASIC has a GetKey function!

Great to know, breaking all records!

Glad at least Casio has some sense.

And hurrah! Another record broken! I noticed that slight drop recently, but still, 300 posts a day... :D

Indeed, I hope their BASIC language is faster now, but even if it isn't much faster, it's still a big step above the Nspire. Plus you can use some colors in it.

I hit a record too probably, 710 posts in less than a month

I stopped caring about my post count a long time ago (at around 350-400 posts), but it probably seems differently to you guys because I like staying so active.  I try to get at least 20 posts a day.  with some exceptions of course -- some days I'll get >50, others <2.

Omnimaga is getting a lot more attention now, maybe we should start a secret campaign to get people to join AND stay moderately active.

Sweet!  Its awesome to know that our popularity and activity is increasing so fast :D Omnimaga truly is an amazing forum and its so nice to see it so alive ^^

I'm guessing omnimaga used to be much less active, like UTI at one point.

Not quite like UTI is right now :P, but it definitely wasn't as active as it is right now

Hmm for as far as I can see the casio prism lacks basic drawing commands like Pxl-on, albeit I like the prizm but I still think Ti-84+ (SE) is just better, in terms of programmability in mean + casio basic is haaaaard

well maybe we should all just use the SDK that is sure to come with it?  I'm sure casio would let us have that, they gave us that with all other models in recent history.

Plus, then we can have great power without BASIC limits.

EDIT: my post count is lucky now.

From what I've heard, Casio isn't as (for lack of a better word) dumb as TI with locking it up and such.

Wow, this place is thriving ;D

If you mean advertising on other websites, no, because I feel this isn't very nice for those site communities when they try hard to remain active as well. This can also tarnish our reputation as well or worse: bring us some trolls retaliating against the advertising. (which I saw happening before) The only time where we did such thing was when another TI forum went through a drastic increase in hostility towards TI-BASIC projects and newbies (JFGI/RTFM comments), putting those users at risk of leaving the entire community if they knew no other site that did not have such problem. As a result, Omni was suggested to them as an effort to save the community. That was back in early 2009. I think this happened with Cemetech too, once, but if I remember, that was when they added the Freebuild forums, which resulted in a troll fest (thanks to Kllrnohj, Nikky, Elfprince and a few others for containing them inside the FB sections).

I think the best way to advertise a forum/website politely would be the following:

-Putting Omni and Cemetech (or whatever other site you like that you post your projects on) in your readmes
-Forum signatures, URL fields and social networks
-Youtube vids featuring various calc games or your projects

Also if you spot a good programmer on ticalc.org that recently released something, you can try to contact him, but it's good to make sure he isn't already member of Omni or another calc site first.
I'm guessing omnimaga used to be much less active, like UTI at one point.
It was mostly on-par with UTI for the most part, but only like 30 Omni members had above 100 posts including staff. Afterward we went down for half a year and reopened. UTI's current activity seems worse than how it was in Early 2005, when they had that server problem and a member trolling.

Fortunately, Cemetech and TI-BD seems to have picked up again too, which is good since each site focuses on different things and attract new users as well. Revsoft picked up again, too, but it doesn't seem to be signifiantly active, still.

So while other forums have dies, omnimaga has started picking up steam?

if it had true forums, they would be overloaded with newbies in BASIC trying to learn how to use strings.  Cuz that's 80% of ticalc.org's population.

No, Cemetech's definitely reviving too :) Unfortunately some forums still have really low activity, and they've never really recovered from the lulls of 2008.

That was kind of like me for a bit, before I found TIBD.
Then, I found Axe (actually, it was featured).

Now that I think about it, I've been programming for a really short time, not even a year.

I believe that people said that everything had been accomplished for the 83+ series and any new idea was deemed "impossible".  This is just from hearing people talk about it; I came in May 2009, so I'm not your best source. :)

Yeah, I came in ... May 2009 ... as well, but from what I've heard it was a pretty rough year. It was just after Cemetech's Jatol incident (when the entire webhosting company that Cemetech used simply disappeared), Omnimaga was down for a few months, the community was pretty quiet, without many new releases of anything. Basically, we kinda died, and now we're back.

I came in September 2010, that's when omnimaga got cool, nah J/K.

This is VERY VERY VERY out of date. That's from late May I think <.<. I should post an update of this, including the smaller boards I did not include above.

yeah I've looked at that before, the other one confused me ^-^

^ This. Hopefully TI-BD continues picking up as well. As for UTI/MaxCoderz/TI-FW I think right now the issue is that they don't have enough active staff and projects in the works. Revsoft might have chances to revive now that they got new staff. I don't know about the others...
so 2008 was a devastating year... what happened?
It seemed like most people were not ambitious enough on new ideas. Whenever someone had a funky idea à-la-calc84maniac, it would be put down by others who would say it's impossible and to not bother. There was also a drastic increase in trolling in overall, Omni died to it, Cemetech had major hosting issues and Ticalc.org staff were less and less active. That combined caused a loss of interest in overall and many people left due to drama or lack of new stuff.
Looking at October...wow
Looks on the rise to me ;D
Yeah I was kinda shocked by October, because normally we should have gotten between 4000 and 8000 posts, since it's supposed to be much less active than September. (Especially that this year we also had a hosting move)

There's a girl on the forums? ???

Also I just took that from Axe Progress thread. Quigibo said there might be an update soon, there.

EDIT: In response to those extremly outdated community stats posted earlier, I spent a few minutes updating the ones I had on my computer. The attachment below shows an idea of the community forums activity since 2005.
