Title: 2010 ACT-SO National Gold Medalist in Computer Science
Post by: Raylin on July 12, 2010, 06:45:47 pm
Quote from: NAACP program
"Glenbard North High School senior Ray Perry from the DuPage County ACT-SO chapter has been awarded the gold medal in Computer Science for his impressive project that involved turning a calculator into a low-cost gaming device."

Today, I got a gold medal in Computer Science at the ACT-SO Nationals using this game. (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;id=536)
I am happy and it was awesome.

This also came with $2000 and a laptop.

HUZZAH! (I've been playing Cave Story.)

You double-posted, though D:

J/k Awesome! You should probably add more info in the news article, though, since it shows up on front page and people who don't browse the board might be curious which program you entered.

Anyway congrats :D

I was the only one who knew you could even make a game on a calculator.
That can kinda set the bar on what the contest was like.

Aaah ok, altough it's still fun because it gets considered as original and stuff. ^^

Now imagine what would have happened if you had brought in some new grayscale raycasting engine. :) The judges wouldn't have even looked at the other entries.

Nice! I never got a good look at lemonade tycoon. It looks like fun. What was your concept, or was it just "game on a calculator"? Enjoy that $2000! Considering that amount of cash, it's probably a pretty decent laptop. If it was a really cheap one, they probably would've either just had the laptop, or just the cash.

Just to show what I know of calculators, I thought (for a moment) that you meant http://www.ticalc.org/archives/news/articles/14/145/145869.html (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/news/articles/14/145/145869.html) when you said Unity. :P
The redesigning hardware one sounds interesting...

I think the fact you managed to create a game in a slow language under a limited platform is what probably amazed them the most. Congrats again ^^

Low cost? These calcs are way overpriced. You can get a Nintendo DS lite for the same cost as a 84 SE.

Congrats! :D

Haha, I think low-performance would have been more appropriate XD

I mean, you can get a PS2 for cheaper than a 83+, I think.
