Title: 2012 Apocalypse TI-83+/TI-84+ Programming Contest
Post by: Yeong on November 13, 2012, 12:02:07 am
After through discussion with some members and KermMartian (because of the overlap issue with Cemetech contest 9), I decided to host a little contest!
2012 Apocalypse Programming Contest

Date: 11/14-12/21

The apocalypse is coming... Nobody exactly knows the reason of such atrocious event... Some say that it's the sudden spread of the nikki simulator...Some say that it's the returning of the giant blue lobster with a pink name...but we can be sure of one thing... The contest is happening! ;D

Theme: any apocalypse themed game/utility. (Zombie Apocalypse, financial crash, missing sandwich, you name them!)

Language: Axe/Grammer/TI-BASIC (with libs to a certain extent)/asm

Devices: TI-83+/84+

Deadline: December 21, 2012 11:59 PM EST

Well since this is a minicontest hosted by me (and lack of funds.), there will be no computer section :(

The result will be in December 25th (I hope) and the winner will receive $20!

Participants will be required to make a thread about it and post the link in this thread.

Axioms are allowed, but the project that was started before November 1st is not allowed.

Grading will be weighted based on the programming language and other possible advantages.

Jointing with Cemetech contest 9: It is possible to enter a same entry in Cemetech contest 9 as long as the entry meets the criteria. But remember. This contest ends a month earlier then Cemetech contest 9!

Submitting Entries: Just submit the zip file with proper documentaion (You know, readme!) to [email protected]!

Paricipants:

TheMachine02 - Cataclysm (http://ourl.ca/17484/323743;topicseen#new) - RECEIVED

You should specify for which calc it is for in case some people misinterpret it. :P

Also how will you post results after Dec 21st 2012?? O.O

(my mom teaches a math class and didn't have one herself, so whe 'borrowed' mine :P )

This sounds great although I probably won't be able to participate either.  I don't own an 84+ or 83+ yet.

Good luck for everyone that enters.

Well, since yeong is the one sponsoring the reward and judging, I don't think that's a very viable possibility ;)

Well the reason that I decided not to include computer section is that cemetech contest 9 is starting soon. :) and the lack of funding. I'm pretty sure that ceme contest will have a computer section, so I decided not to bother with it.

From Kerm's latest post on the Cemetech contest ideas thread

Quote
Categories: (1) z80 calculators (ASM, Axe, and BASIC judged and weighted together), (2) Casio calculators (fx9860g and Prizm, although we'd probably only get Prizm entries), and (3) computers.

It does look like there will be a comp section.

I was hoping there would be a computer section for this contest as I was going to compete in both :P

Gosh darn, no computers.
There is a slight chance that I might finally make another calc game for this... but I'll most likely just join the Cemetech one/me makes a cemetech account

Well it depends if Cemetech allows releasing entries before their deadline. (Since theirs is much farther than yours)

Also Epic7 there will most likely be a Computer contest next Spring or Summer. There was supposed to be a Computer and 68K one (along with TI-83+ BASIC I think) this Fall, but it finally turned into an IRC bot mini contest.

You can still post about your projects on Omni I guess though, but yeah like I said I think there will be a computer section for the 2013 Omnimaga contest.

The main issue is finances. If Omnimaga staff simply can't afford to offer more than 3 prizes, then certain categories will have to be cut out. We have to remember that with $100 prizes, if you have 4 categories (eg TI-83+, Nspire, Computer and PRIZM), that's $400 worth of prizes. In late 2011, Omnimaga almost went offline because Omni admins were running out of money to pay the $40/month hosting bill and the 2nd contest prize was delivered 2 months late.

That said, next Spring maybe Omni could just drop the PRIZM category and replace it with computer stuff, since nobody even submitted any PRIZM entry last year. Or they could have every calc model other than the 83+/84+/Nspire series compete against each others.

I don't know if I should make people who's participating to make topic or not.
Might be a good idea. That will prompt participants to remain active and prevent a drastic activity drop or something like during the 2011 TI-Nspire contest.

It might be good to point out where to make the topic (other calc projects and ideas maybe) in case somebody decided it was wise to create his thread in general technology/hardware  or anime and mangas and got disqualified due to you not noticing his topic. :P

I assume that would be ok as long as it conforms to both themes. So if you port and modify a apocalyptic themed game, you should be fine :D
Title: Re: 2012 Apocalypse TI-83+/TI-84+ Programming Contest

Suggestion for contest rules:

-Any participant that is caught mentioning "computer section" or any derivative in this topic, inside his calc game or in any thread related to this contest is automatically disqualified. :P

That might hopefully stop people from bitching about the lack of a computer section and people from asking if there is a computer category. :P

Joking aside, the Cemetech contest rules will probably come out in a day or two. Then you'll see if their contest allows it. From my understanding, you could submit a game demo or full game here then re-use the engine in a Cemetech release and you should be fine. I don't know how originality points will go, though.

After discussing with Kerm, we have reached a decision: you may enter a same project in both contest as long as the criteria is met. However, your grade will suffer heavily in both contests it better be good! :P

What is the deadline for creating a topic? Because I'm currently busy om improving my 3D engine. If all goes well, I might be able to still create a project for the contest after that, maybe even with 3D, who knows? (assuming that would count as a library because the 3D engine project started a long time before this contest).

Just as long as you at least post some updates on your project at one point around December like Yeong said. That is to prevent a repeat of the 2011 TI-Nspire contest, where every participants vanished from Omnimaga entirely during the entire duration of the contest, making things sound like nobody was participating. This is also of course to encourage people to remain active even during the contest.

I'M unsure, but if it works like the actual Omnimaga contests during Summer, team projects only get points for the stuff the main author worked on. For example, if you didn't make a single sprite, then this might affect originality. However, if teams are allowed, then maybe the main issue might be prize distribution, and Yeong might stop holding responsible for whatever happens with the prize after it's distributed and you actually received it (eg if you don't or can't give anything to your teamate)

EDIT: Nvm, see Yeong post just above.

I'd say, go into the contest:
You started ASM ? Well, you can't learn without practice, and what better than a contest for practising ? :)
And if you prefer not trying with ASM, Axe is like bike. You never forget it. Even when you think you don't know anything anymore, it is still there ;)

Just send one from your computer...

And if it's something that's wrong with validating OS (did you buy calc after august 2011?)
The use one of the penguins tools to be able to send any os you want

I am pretty sure that I bought it before August 2011 but yes it is the valadating process problem. Where do I get penguins tools and how do I use them?

Note: Submitted products do not necessarily have to be finished to be accepted (and have a chance to win). Just make sure it's quite enjoyable and functional in its current state and do your best and you should be fine.

Only one week left before Dec 21st too!

I recommend 2.43. MP and assembly are bad together.
Title: Re: 2012 Apocalypse TI-83+/TI-84+ Programming Contest
Post by: Hayleia on December 15, 2012, 07:05:53 am
MP and assembly are bad together.
That is not even it. MP doesn't need assembly to be bad, it is bad alone.
I'd recommend 2.43, like Matref, if you want everything to work on your calc.
Title: Re: 2012 Apocalypse TI-83+/TI-84+ Programming Contest
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 15, 2012, 09:37:02 am
True, apparently it's possible to crash the calc even without a single line of code (BASIC or ASM) on MP. Not that it's impossible on older OSes too (the 2 bytes token string Rcl glitch comes to mind) but it's far less bad than on MathPrint ones.
Title: Re: 2012 Apocalypse TI-83+/TI-84+ Programming Contest
Post by: XiiDraco on December 15, 2012, 03:08:19 pm
So 2.53 = bad.
2.43 = good?
Title: Re: 2012 Apocalypse TI-83+/TI-84+ Programming Contest
Post by: Hayleia on December 15, 2012, 03:30:37 pm
Answer = yes.

(note that if you really want MaathPrint, for a reason that I would not understand (but I won't prevent you from doing so, it is your choice), then the 2.55 is more stable than the 2.53 but still buggy too)
Title: Re: 2012 Apocalypse TI-83+/TI-84+ Programming Contest
Post by: XiiDraco on December 15, 2012, 05:48:23 pm
oh so downgrading to 2.53 was a BAD idea.
crap well any way my project was working just fine without crashing the clac untill I implemented the flames into it from the flames tutorial, now it crashes after word randomly almost every time.
