Title: 8th month-based posting record in a row and possible hosting move
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 08, 2010, 11:22:35 pm
Today we have beaten yet another month-based monthly posting record. The original record of 2025 for all of September 2007 was beaten almost 9 days into September 2010, almost as fast as we did with June, July and August. However, you probably noticed that Omnimaga website has suffered more downtimes recently, especially during afternoon and sometimes during night, throwing you intermittent "500 Internal Server Error" messages that usually goes away after a second, but happens every few page load, hindering posters and OmnomIRC users. Well, not only this is happening, but 1and1 hosting provider also started reducing the quality of their PHP support on their shared servers, causing one of our anti-spam to go off, making the registration process extremly slow due to the website not being able to connect to the Stop Forum Spam (http://www.stopforumspam.com/) database anymore. In addition to that, when we will reach 150000 posts or so, we will most likely reach the 100 MB database size cap 1and1 put on all their hosting plans.

My guess about the downtimes and PHP features disabling is that either 1and1 services are getting lower and lower in quality, or Omnimaga, with the combination of TIMGUL (despite receiving much less traffic than Omnimaga) are simply too demanding for the hosting plan anymore. In other words, there are chances that we may be switching to Surpasshosting soon, which is what Cemetech uses since 2007.

What this means for you is that during October, there may be some periods of downtimes that will last several hours, should we switch hosting then. The duration of the downtimes would depend of how well and successful the hosting move occurs. We are choosing October, as historically, it isn't a very busy month on Omnimaga. That way, if we attempt to switch to a new host, not as many users will be affected.

Currently Omnimaga database, according to 1and1 control panel, is 38.52 MB. TIMGUL database is 6.51 MB. TIMGUL went through a major data loss and a lot of other posts were deleted later, though. I think about 5000 posts of fights/drama were wiped at once and the site went from 14000 posts to 9000. Memberbase went from 400 to 90 or something.

I would also say go for it, if 1and1 is slowly decreasing our features, bad things could happen D:

Yeah true x.x

Also, by the time we move, we will probably end up with undeleted bot accounts, so when we moved, prepare to see the member count drop :P

Well, the issue is that I'm relunctant about shutting down the site for almost entire days during a busy period. Our activity may be similar to last month, but a lot of people just bought their new calc for school and are coming here to download games. If you check October stats, you will notice that it's quieter most years. However, if it gets too bad, I'll do it earlier. As for bots, so far it doesn't seem too bad because the mod appears to have stopped working one week ago, yet no bot posted.

As for membercount drop, I meant the total amount of registered members, which is in the 500s. After the move, I'll do an anti-bot scan and it will most likely detect dozens, which will be deleted.

yeah that's what i meant about members, just dont lose their records. well it has to happen sometime. no escaping the fact. don't know much about servers, but i think it's unlikely that you could employ a gradual process?

EDIT: cool

Nah don't worry, no legit member will be deleted. Only bots. Example, if FreePornMovies2010 registers on the site, his account will most likely vanish. :P

lol, I think that would be fine

frankly, I think a move would be perfectly fine, especially if 1and1 hosting is going down in quality....

(just my opinion btw)

Fine by me, especially with the current hosting issues. :)

I'd say go for it.

And about the 8th month in a row, let's see if we can get to 12...

Yeah, I wish Jan 2010 beaten a record too, we may have been able to have an entire year alone beat every previous record :P In Jan 2006 there were like 4000 posts and we got around 2600 in Jan 2010. What I wonder is next year, though. Will all the new program, releases, large POTY and high Cemetech/Omni forum activity cause even higher activity? Hopefully even if it is not as high maybe it will remain pretty high too.

Mhmm, as temporary measure, I may be able to fix the anti-spam outage, thanks to the help of a guy on SMF forums. It is not guaranteed it will work, though, but I will let you know if it does (although if you see the total membercount (currently 515-ish) suddently go down, then this means the spambot mod got fixed :P)

Psh, only 515 members? My site has >1000!

Granted, over 90% of that is spambots...

Lol :P

I can't imagine how high our count would be if the anti-spam questions mod wasn't installed, though. On the old Omni board, back then Invisionfree had no anti-spam protection, and the member IDs were close to 5000 near the end (although I kept deleting bots). On the new board, I delete them regularly too, but we are still not even in the 1000s in terms of member ID.

According to what Kerm said to me about his Surpasshosting plan and what I've read on many forums, including SMF community site, regarding hosting, it is becoming clear that I will need something else than shared hosting or at least a good shared hosting provider (that doesn't fall under the so-called overseller category, like many, and end up disabling features or blaming you when downtimes occurs.) From what I've seen, it looks like I may have to go towards a VPS (virtual private server). THose, however, offer much less diskspace for the price, which means that for affordable hosting, I would need to only use it for Omnimaga hosting. I also need to make sure to choose enough RAM. Some people say a SMF board with 50-75 users at once on it (default timespan of 15 minutes) should run fine under 512 MB of RAM, but I need to plan in long terms too. PLus I would certainly need help to install the required stuff to run my site efficiently. Omnimaga uses about 3 GB of diskspace. This means I would probably leave TIMGUL on my 1and1 account with the domain names, but Omnimaga would run on the new host alone.

Personally, I would rather get some help setting up softwares on a VPS, spend a bit more money on hosting, rather than switch to a new host, only to find out one year later that they'll shut down some PHP features in my face or worse, tell me Omnimaga slows down their server.

I am particulary interested in the VPS company that Alberthrocks is using for his new site at http://www.hostfolks.com/hosting/vps/

If it looks like I need a lot more RAM that that as well as other stuff and I have to sacrify webspace for a more affordable price, then what I can do is simply keep the calc videos hosted on 1and1, embed Youtube vids in the calc videos page and put mirror links to the 1and1 downloadable video files in the description. Just those are 800 MB I think :P

Small update: I'm probably gonna go with a SMF community-approved hosting provider. So far I am interested in two in particular. It's probably gonna be a shared hosting, but a quality one. I got told bad reviews about hostfolks because they also oversell and Alberthro said he had downtimes lately too on his VPS. Also, even if I chosen a better VPS somewhere else, for the price I would get more with a shared hosting. We're not gonna have 120 GB of diskspace anymore, but we never reached 15 at all anyway, and that's with TIMGUL included. Omnimaga is about 1.5 GB if we exclude video files. When we move I may link the video section to Youtube and simply keep my wmv files as backup on 1and1 in case my youtube acct went down or something. Also, those hosts put like 80 sites max per server at once, while 1and1 and the like put like 1000-2000 on one server.
