Title: A theme editor coming for Ndless 3.1
Post by: critor on July 05, 2012, 11:32:11 am
On 3.x development OSes, TI had started to develop a theme editor.

But for some reason, that functionnality was totally removed from the released OSes.
All what is left is a hidden "theme.csv" file at the documents root with some RGB colors specifications, but which seems totally ignored by the OS as I've allready managed to modify it without getting anything special on the screen.

Fortunately, Levak has worked very hard on a theme editor/loader for Ndless 3.1.
Use your favorite colors or greys on your TI-Nspire!  ;D(http://www.omnimaga.org/Themes/default/images/gpbp_arrow_up.gif)

Hundreds of widget elements can be customized:

If anyone wants to make a documentation concerning all "names" here is the beta version : http://levak.free.fr/ftp/nspire/ThemeEditor/

Notice that this version is not complete yet for one reason : my laptop went out of battery in th plane. Basically, it can loads a theme where the path is indicated in the config file, but cannot save it. Each modification you make is lost on each reboot.

This is why this version is open for documentation but not for usage.

Since there are like hundreds of "names", I wish some people will help me to make a "link" between those names and helpful pictures.

edit : also, there are fails in the gradient system, but that's not my fault, it is TI's code that doesn't handle (or handle only some) specifics couples of End/Start colors.

Do you think that in the future pictures can be implemented as background? Say, like on the main menu you see "Omnimaga" in blue in the background?

No you can't the way it is coded.
Or we have to modify the core code which is not thinkable.

Someone should make a theme with #9EAB88 and #1A1C16./me runs
(Those are the colors of a TI-83 Plus screen, by the way. At least according to WabbitEmu.)

now if only we could customize the colors on a TI-83 Plus ;D

Looks pretty great. I wonder if one day we will be able to change the GUI or borders entirely?  For example if somebody wanted his Nspire to look exactly like Windows 98 or Mac OS X

It """""""""can""""""""" be made the way it is coded. But trust me, you're dreaming :D
Anyway, I should stop say that it can be made, since everything is possible with Ndless.

Well... any reasonable thing. On an unrelated note, what would I need to get started with c development?
edit: anyways, will create a separate topic for that... so don't answer that last question here.

I loaded the theme editor on my calculator, a TI-Nspire click pad with OS 3.1 and Ndless, and it reboots when I run it. Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

Was messing with the editor and this is what I've done:
(http://s8.postimage.org/fgg6k6ccx/Nspire_Theme_Edit2.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/fgg6k6ccx/)(http://s19.postimage.org/gpaejy7gf/Nspire_Theme_Edit.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/gpaejy7gf/)
The picture isn't very clear since it was my iPhone... So don't just trust what you see.

1. Outlined in red (not as bright as in the photos)
2. Changed top bar gradient to Black to Blue
3. Pop up bar when putting mouse over things is now black with bright green text and outline
4. All titles (e.g. New Document, Current, Recent>) are a darker gray that light up bright green when highlighted
5. Highlight bar is also Black to Blue gradient
6. Drop down menu (e.g. when you click recent or status) is black with dark gray text that are green when highlighted just like the homescreen
7. When you highlight the apps at the bottom, the text that comes up at the very bottom matches the red outline.
8. The "Current" and "Recent>" text turn a dark red when there is no current or recent

Looking pretty good :)
Does this mean that in the future there might be theme files or something, like replacing the themes.csv with some customized version?

Also, OT but the Computer Link works for updating Ndless
not sure about installing
And what's with the folder name? 0.o
"ndless-GÇïv3.GÇï1-GÇïbeta-GÇïr643"

Not really but that's the idea.
According to my thoughts, the theme developer will create bunch of themes and publish them somewhere in a database. Other users will do so. Then, users that don't want to waste time or don't know much about theme editing will just send the .theme.tns files on the calculator and launch them (ndless.cfg). The theme will be applied and saved as default theme.

For now I have only one problem : I have no precise idea how to separate the theme editor itself and the theme manager. What's cool now, is that the theme editor launch immediatly. If I add a theme manager we will have to chose some option each time we will want to change a value.

Also, I plan to add a "last index" thing in order to avoid losing (the game) time during come and backs to the theme editor.

Is the latest Ndless available at the usual place? Because the last time I downloaded the latest revision on the Ndless site it still wouldn't run some recent demos or programs, so I thought Ndless updates moved elsewhere or something.

No. It is still where it is (unsads).
But the thing is, there is a svn trunk for beta testers and ExtendeD/Lionel where you have to build it with a specific env. Some demos where using those revisions of Ndless.
To my mind Lionel updates the public build when he has some time =).

Anyway, it should work with the latest publicly available revision as some users here managed to run it.

Nice =)
Is it possible that you take some of your time to give a name to each field you modified in order to make it easier for other people to modify what they want ?
It is what I call "ready for documentation".
Thanks.

Ah ok so the latest version isn't always an executable right? I guess that might explain why there were some people having troubles running Ndless programs sometimes.

Yes. For example, when there is a bug in the trunk, we can "easily" fix it. If the public one would have been automatically updated, that would let some people with an untested revision.
But most of the time, it is just that people don't have the latest publicly available revision because they don't know there is a new one. Indeed, Ndless 3.1 is in constant upgrade since the recent works and discoveries (usb, gui, strings, etc ..).

Just had a random thought..did anybody here use Anycolor (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/anycolor) back in the Firefox 3 days? Basically, you give it base, accent and text colors and it puts them to use accordingly.
Maybe something like that could be a sort of "lite" version of the editor..?

Edit: haven't been playing with this much, and most of what I've messed with so far is self-explanatory..I'll put them out anyway

Ndless's SVN head is now pushed at least every week as a public zipped release  to make it available to everyone. The packaging and upload is automated with a 'make' target to make things easier.

Those names are taken directly from the list. I'm guessing they're part of the OS itself, and the editor just lists and changes them.
Most of them you can (somewhat) tell what they are just by looking at the names, anyway.. And if you don't know for sure and care enough to find out you can change it to some obvious color and look around :P

As Darl181 said, those "names" are exactly the one I found in the phoenix.raw file as an entire field. In a way it is possible to change them grafically to an obvious name but since there where like 300 names I wasn't really for change them ; there are kindly the bests to be small and explanable.

Also, those names are used in the theme file. I'm using the same format as theme.csv if one day TI wants to really add a Theme Editor. :D

could it be possible to make some kind of file that contains specific settings? some kind of style pack, so that it can be easy to share..

like i have some style, and i can save it to a file. That way i could just upload it, and everyone could just set it as their style pack, without having to change any value

(i'm sory if this has already been told, i did not read all the posts)

The first complete version of ThemeEditor has just been released! ;D(http://www.omnimaga.org/Themes/default/images/gpbp_arrow_up.gif)
(1st post updated)
Source: http://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=126773#p126773

It now supports theme files (*.theme.tns). :D
ThemeEditor will let you create/edit those files, and of course you'll be able to share them :)

The last theme file used with ThemeEditor becomes your current Nspire theme once you exit the editor.

The last theme file used with ThemeEditor can also be loaded automatically after a reboot if you put the ThemeEditor.tns file in the /ndless/startup folder. ;D

Enjoy and please share your great theme files with us! ;)

I found that it rebooted after I created a "new theme", which also created a corrupted file that I could only delete on the calculator. I had to modify the default theme to get it to work, and now it seems to be fine. It increases boot time after restarting but I'm fine with that.

I'm liking how it saves where you were in the menu, that makes it a lot faster.

Is it possible to change the background and/or text colors in the calculator app?   I have this dark scrollbar going and it clashes pretty hard :P

Code: [Select]
char * name;
int length = show_msg_user_input(nameYourTheme, "", "mytheme", &name);
is the code that makes the calculator crash since it uses my fixed version of show_msg_user_input that is not yet in the Ndless trunk. I guess the simplest for now is to change this two lines by

Code: [Select]
char name[] = "mytheme";
int length = sizeof(name);

Also, time at reboot can't be affected, I guess, since it is instant to load a theme file and the same code is launched for startup configuration (but no gui).

No. Sometimes there are names for BW, but when you are using the CX you can't change Clickpad theme values.

If you want to know everything, there are two fields in the RAM, one for Gray scale and one for Color screens.

ThemeEditor has just been updated again.

You can now press 'i' to invert the current edited item color, or to invert all items colors if you're on the items list.

Moreover, Adriweb and Levak have just released together the 1st complete theme replacement for your TI-Nspire CX: DarkSide.

Looking pretty good :)
I might look through it to find out how to change the graphscreen default color..tho otoh I might just leave math stuff alone for simplicity/ease of use :P

Also is it just me or is ScrollBarDisabledArrowBox bugged, using the color from the enabled one instead?  Yay ti :P

Also I'm putting together another one that isn't so dark (lol at the star wars reference on ti-planet tho ;D), based on the V5 Retro theme (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?theme=8)'s colors.  Edit:reset to normal theme (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?theme=2)
I tried the normal V5 (default theme), but while it works well on a huge computer screen it kind of clashes when you try to put them on a calc's screen, esp. one that makes everything brighter. :/  The other just looks better imo.

I attached Midnight to the post with the screenshot, and I'm assuming it was found because it found its way to the Ti-planet archives :)

The one just above, pretty much the only thing I've done so far is the document browser so I haven't attached it yet. Once I get more stuff done I will.

Relating to documenting the stuff, would a page on hackspire work? I don't have an account there but idk of a better place to put that sort of thing.
(also is there a list of the properties already listed out somewhere, so they don't have to all be re-typed? :P)

How do you get the clock to appear at the top? Is there a function in the clock program?
Title: Re: A theme editor coming for Ndless 3.1
Post by: Darl181 on July 18, 2012, 06:09:32 pm
That's nClock, and yes there is.
Actually, if you wanted you could put it wherever you want on the screen :P but the default location works well.

Getting close to finishing v5r..tho idk what ~half these properties affect XD
Expect a lot or random bright red stuff I guess..that could work actually
(leaving stuff I have no idea about in some obviously-not-fitting color, then when somebody brings it up get a location and home in on it :D)
(tho I'm guessing a good-sized chunk of them are for the grayscale nspires)

You may not noticed that Theme Editor was silently updated in order to add the Random and Invert features, both on the entire colors and only one color from the color picker. Keys are obviously "i" and "r". Also, I added a dummy readme.

Do you think that it is too long to design a full replacement theme for the TI-Nspire, having to understand and customize those hundreds of widgets ?

Then the last build from Levak is for you! ;)
You can now randomize current/all colors in order to automatically build your own theme by pressing 'r' in the editor.

It seems I'm lucky this evening - 1st hit on the 'r' key gave me this: :P

Seems you did get lucky--when i was trying it last night it took me about four times to get a titlebar gradient that wasn't destroyed lol
and then I looked at the homescreen *.*

I'm thinking of making a theme based on a certain firefox theme (ft evo) I used to like  and use (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=11111.0;attach=10141;image)  a lot (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=3544.0;attach=10541;image)  before an update ruined it.
Or I might just end up doing 8 ultimo (current theme yay?), or both, idk.

Edit:

Theme based on an omnimaga site theme V5 Retro. Haven't seen a light-colored custom theme yet so I guess this fills some sort of hole :P
If you notice something bright red let me know (PM, email (see profile), post, w/e), b/c it's prolly something I was looking for and couldn't find where it affected the os, and tia :)

[ img]http://darl181.webuda.com/screenies/V5Retro.gif[/img]  [ img]http://darl181.webuda.com/screenies/V5Rstatus.png[/img]

Edit2: Fsr my ftp went down (so much for 99% uptime mr. 000webhost) so screenies uploaded here.
Edit3: ..and ofc it's back up in the next half-hour..leaving the uploaded screenshots tho because why not :P

[necro]

Figured I might as well post the theme I use on a daily basis :P
Originally based on the Firefox theme 8 Ultimo (see post ↑), tweaked a bit over time for readability and stuff.

(looks better when not murdered by gif limitations)

Not as polished as the other one, but still usable :)

Never got around to finishing documenting this, so if someone else wants to then have at it :)

Okay, so I made a documentation of the all of the different parts of the Nspire theme.
Of course I was “only” able to find about 210 of the 353 different parts. I have my Nspire next to me with those 143 parts in red, and I searched around and found no changes.
If you can find any of these parts, please comment about it.

This should allow making themes to be a whole lot easier, as all you have to do is just look through the documentation, have the theme editor open, and then just change each color as you want. And you probably won’t have to even exit out of the theme editor.

Also, when you are stuck in a frustrating game of hide and seek, any thing is funny, but ComboBoxInactiveVerticalLineInsideArrow is a horizontal line inside a arrow.
And ScrollbarDisabledArrowBox does nothing because ScrollbarEnabledArrowBox covers for both of them

Just saw Darl's themes. Those are awesome.

And I just got an idea for an app people might find useful. Who would be interested in a utility to generate a theme graphically?

I'll need to look at how the Nspire ThemeEditor stores its themes, but it's definitely possible :)

What do you mean by graphically? If you mean an image, I don’t think that it could be possible, because I think the original basis of the theme editor was an excel sheet with a bunch of rgb values

What I think might be nice is a theme creator.
Have the theme editor right next to an emulator that shows the place where the theme would be, changing in real time with the theme editor. Also, it could have a few preprogrammed layouts, like you enter the rgb value, and it automatically changes all of the values to be based on that, such as gradients starting at a lower rgb value, and ending at a much lower rgb value, and text being at a much higher rgb value.

Oh, and the i and r keys are nice for inverting and random, but a key for making all the same color of the current r, g, or b value, or r, g, and b for the whole theme, would be nice too

And Darl181, I found a few of the red sections (although you either forgot to make other parts red, or you found some things that I could not, in which case it would be cool if you could show me :))
Check box is activated when you try to save a scratchpad
Inactive arrows are when you can see the arrow but can’t click it, because there is another dialog box open

Yeah it would be nice. I like how on some sites or forums when editing CSS for example it shows a real-time preview of your edits.

Yeah, that's what I meant (sorry if I didn't explain my idea very well): a computer program that would allow you to change colors with a live preview on the side that generates the theme.tns file for ThemeEditor.

Ah, I would be a computer program. I assumed it would be on calc and was wondering how you could fit the editor and the previw on the same screen since the preview would take all the screen :P
Anyway, it is a very good idea :D

Hi! I just registered to ask a question: I'm using version 3.1.0.392 of the TI-Nspire CX OS (should be the right one) and ndless revision 685. When I try to load ThemeEditor.tns, the calculator just crashes and reboots, and no "Theme Editor" option appears in the settings menu. Placing the ThemeEditor.tns file in the startup folder and rebooting does not load the program either. I think it's probably an issue on my side but I'm not sure what it is, help would be appreciated... thanks in advance! :D

Hi d0min0rient, is r685 the latest? That's the only explanation I can think of... Either that or the tns is corrupted.
Anyway, welcome! You may want to introduce yourself in the Introduce Yourself! board.

That's strange... r685 is indeed the lastest public revision.

Uh ? It doesn't crash and reboot-loop then if it is in the startup folder ? strange again ...

I thought something was wrong with the OS and/or ndless. Reinstalled them both, still no luck :(

I might work on this to change the GUI of Nspire itself and make it look like a Wii or something :) I'm learning Nspire C and porting Genesis Plus isn't easy, so I'm doing littler projects to learn more when I hit a stump.

This project doesn't work. It throws me the classic "Your version of Ndless is too old!" error! Why am I geting this so often?

Because your Ndless is too old ? You need r680.
