Title: An Informal Chat with Peter Balyta - Cemetech
Post by: Geekboy1011 on March 31, 2014, 03:36:37 pm
Back in February, Cemetech reported (http://www.cemetech.net/news.php?year=2014&month=all&id=650) on the promotion of the previous Executive Director of Worldwide Marketing & Product Strategy, Peter Balyta, to president of TI Education. At T^3 2014 in Las Vegas, we had several opportunities to interact with Dr. Balyta, and he reiterated his mission to work with the community as well as to encourage programming wherever it intersects with and enhances TI's mission. Dr. Balyta generously spoke to me(Kerm Martian) this past Friday, answering questions about the present and future of TI's technology, its role in promoting programming and STEM, and his thoughts on the calculator enthusiast community. I was very pleased with what he had to say, and the fact that the following 4,000-word transcript is an edited and abridged version of our conversation (!) should belie the depth of our discussion.

If you lack the time or patience to read the full interview, a few important quotes are worth your time. For example:
Quote from: Peter Balyta
Over the last few years, as I've been more involved in product strategy and then going into worldwide marketing, I've worked hard to help the organization see that the community can really help us, and that we need to work more closely with the community along the positive lines I've discussed with you, adding value to the products, and I believe that that far outweighs the negatives. Most of the people in the community want to innovate, they want to improve their programming skills, they're very competitive people, and the vast majority is working on positive innovation. Those are the initiatives that we're excited about.
Quote
[W]hat you guys do is extremely valuable as well, whether it's programming or just showing what's possible. I refer to it as "extending the capability" of our platforms. That is very helpful for us to see what else can be done today and what should we be thinking about tomorrow. While I can't comment specifically on any roadmap plans and especially not what the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition will look like in the future, what I said earlier, that there's an important customer base there, it's one of our two hero product lines, and we're committed to improving the customer experience, and in my mind that includes performance going into the future.
Quote
In some parts of the world, programming as part of STEM regardless of whether TI is involved is really taking off, and I'm happy to see that. We're partnering more and more with folks to have kids start programming early on, knowing that all kids could have a platform for programming right there in their hands. They can do it in schools, they can do it at home, on the bus, waiting for lacrosse or soccer, and we're seeing that take off in parts of the world, for example in France. The TI-89 and now the TI-Nspire CAS platform is really taking off as a programming platform, and we try to encourage that wherever we see it. We're starting to see some of that here, and we're excited to recognize that. If you have ideas on how we can encourage that more, let me know.
Dr. Balyta spoke at length about TI's educational mission with its graphing calculators, including the classroom material and activities and professional development that it offers. We touched on the ever-popular STEM Behind Hollywood (http://www.cemetech.net/news.php?658) program, including whether that program might feasibly find a home on the TI-84+CSE. Perhaps most importantly to the community, Dr. Balyta discussed his views on the value of the community to TI (and vice versa), and how we can continue to build a close positive relationship in the future. I thank Dr. Balyta once again for his time, and I'll look forward to continuing to liaise between Cemetech, the community, and TI Education in the future on the behalf of our many skilled and passionate programmers, students, and teachers.

Thanks for posting this. This was interesting to read the highlights, although I unfortunately didn't have time to read the entire interview so far. Hopefully TI eventually heads into a direction more open towards the community and bug fixing in the future.

Yeah I meant to do so yesterday just forgot. And based on my personal talking with Kerm it went very well. We shall see how it all pans out as time goes on but things are looking up :D  If you get time give it a read. Its interesting albeit a little dry from the way it was typed up but it speaks for it self ^^

Just read through it. And while I am happy to read that TI values our contributions, I also have to agree with what LDebroux said: don't expect sudden policy changes and stuff, especially regarding the nspire line. Which I'm sad about.
Tho I hope I'm wrong.
Message to TI: at least give us key repeat in Lua! :P

I do find that quote particularly funny as the TI-89 is pretty much a dead platform. This is true from the community standpoint and TI's standpoint. Perhaps he meant to say the TI-83+ series? Though, that wouldn't be accurate either as the TI-83+ Series has been the most active for quite some time.

This had been done weeks ago on TI-Planet, and as far as I know it hadn't been newsed about here, which is your right:
http://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14065&p=158990

But now that you've newsed about something similar, not even a single link to the anterior information in the news is not normal.

I suppose it hasn't been done on purpose of course, and I expect more professional news in the future if the new Omnimaga newsers want the site to keep its reference position in the TI community, a reputation I've contributed to build with my many years of volunteer work here.

We linked to our source, Cemetech.

OK
1 Those are 2 completely different news articles one is adriweb talking to my balyta one is KermM. And therefor do not deserve the minor bashing in your post.

2 I kept my source  linked in complete and total fashion that the source told me I could, I asked KermM for explicit permission to copy his article and shorten it to be one link to the main article at the end. So how is that not linking the anterior forum and being unprofessional. I did my leg work sorry I do not Cross news from Ti-Planet

3 You can expect what ever you want Its not your forum we will do as we deem best

I didn't even know about the TI-Planet interview myself, so if I wrote the news above it would probably have taken a while before I finally mention the TI-Planet interview (at least until I manage to find it among the many BAC/correction algorithmique news). As for when Omni admins themselves decide to post news, I doubt they frequent TI-Planet often since almost every news are in French (in this particular case the English flag won't translate the news).

That is a large amount of what it is on top of me just not having time to go on Ti-Planet and to fight with understanding the translations. Its also Ti-Planets staff's job to post related news articles in the proper section for approval/moderation to be front paged. And we have explained that but they insist we have not so meh

Considering they are still editor (unless it's because you forgot to remove them), it's more the fact they no longer want to post news here than you not wanting to. The difference now is that every news are mod-approval, including mine or Kerm's, and it sometimes takes a few day before they're approved (which is why I complained a few times about it).

It takes a few days because we are typically busy we get emails for every news article that's attempted to be posted.  We just work and have lives outside of here so yes there can be delay even though we try not to let that happen ^^

I understand. I wish Omni had admins accross multiple timezones, though, but again this is not always possible and it could make admin meetings hard.

My idea around late 2010 or early 2011 was to do the news section like Cemetech, where each forum post has a tiny icon next to the EDIT/QUOTE buttons allowing you to flag that content as news and allowing you to edit/save the content in case the original poster deleted it. The news section would have listed topics by start date in the same fashion as in http://www.ticalc.org/news/ regardless of which board they originate from (so instead of getting lost in the list, important threads would be in two sections at once). Every single forum member above a certain post count would be able to submit posts for news approval and the editor team would have been in charge of approving news.

However, the many personal website ads, quadratic solver and menu RPG news requests would be ridiculous. >.<

The only Omni staff outside US/Canada is Soru. So there is one. :P
Also for the last paragraph, if a high enough post count requirement is set up then it's ok I guess (people with high post counts are generally wiser :P). And if someone abuses it anyway then they could be disabled from requesting news approval.

Oh I really meant a full admin :P (but again since Soru often does work on Omni including the upgrade)

Geekboy isn't a full admin but he works as much as Soru on Omni.

Why does TI hate ndless so much? I'm curious. They support programming for every calc but the nspires.

Because people made tools that allows you to circumvent the teacher mode and cheat on exams and the Nspire happens to be their main calculator line.
