Title: An official TI-Nspire theme editor!
Post by: critor on April 01, 2012, 03:39:15 pm
Cross-posting from TI-Planet.

In a previous news (http://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7797#p115186) after the release of OS 3.0.1, we were discovering a hidden "theme.csv" file at the root of the Nspire documents:

Its content seemed to be able to customize your Nspire OS display, which would be great for CM/CX:
Quote
eWindowTitleBarBackground,0xFFFFFF,0xFF0000
eWindowTitleBarForeground,0xFFFFFF,0xFF0000
eWindowTitleBarTextBackground,0xFFFFFF,0xFFFF00
eWindowTitleBarTextForeground,0x000000,0x00FF00

Unfortunately, several attemps of modifying its content didn't trigger anything on the display.

May be was it just a feature experimented on development OSes, and partialy disabled on production OSes...

And this evening we have the proof! Here is a development OS with the official Nspire theme editor! ;D(http://www.omnimaga.org/Themes/default/images/gpbp_arrow_up.gif)

Is it going to be included in the 3.2 OS in may this time, or will it once again be removed before the release? Official public TI documents don't mention it up to now...

(I also add that I've tested this theme editor (but it didn't work on non-CX apparently) while in Dallas, last summer....)

Well, I guess it doesn't do anything on non-CX B&W displays, since there's only 2 colors. But it's pretty nice if you want to change the background pink or something :P

By the way, it might be useful for me to mention that this news is not an April Fool's prank.

Great discoveries may occur on the 1st of April too! ;)

The theme editor would be useful to me on my TI-Nspire if I could use it to make the menus black-on-white instead of black-on-gray to increase visibility.

/me can't wait until April 2nd :P

This looks nice though. This would be great if we could change how our Nspire looks like (I wonder if we could change the controls/interface layout too?)

Hey DJ-O, my post on the omnodingus site that you moved to spam was an April first day joke.  I only post this here because I can't seem to post a reply to your announcement about moving it. ;)

Oh right I forgot the spam section required 1000 posts. X.x Anyway I moved it because there was no website URL in the post and you didn't add one. It would have been funny if you had one and it linked to some weird site or a redirect :P

how do you get the dev oses??
This was taken from a public document on the Internet... but you really have to know what to look for in order to find it :P (and still, we weren't really expecting this when we found this).

As for other dev os things, I had the opportunity to see quite a lot while I was in Dallas (at TI's).
Also, some of us are alpha/beta-testing the new 3.2 OS (but there we can't say much .....)

I thought I could still post in spam long before 1000 posts though.

Wow there are dev OSes on the public internet domain?
And I wonder what would TI stand to gain by releasing this theme editor? They don't really release appearance features such as these.
Shame it won't work to a great effect on non-CXes tho...

This might have been before the requirement was increased. Or maybe now it's 500?

Possibly, however I only reached 1000 posts last month and I remember posting in spam long before that.
Perhaps it also depends on registration date? Newer members may have this 1000 post restriction now or something. Or it varies as http://ourl.ca/68275 says

Nah the requirement definitively changed at some point. I just have no clue what it is anymore.

Hmm weird: Juju does say it varies in this particular post, which I think is the most updated version: http://ourl.ca/6827/274885

No. Or it would be a great mistake by TI. Or a leak by some testers which would definitely cause them troubles....
What you can find tho, are screenshots and photos of devices running prototypes/dev OSes.

And I wonder what would TI stand to gain by releasing this theme editor? They don't really release appearance features such as these.

I think they did that in order to test different theme variations directly by changing them on-calc, without having to recompile the OS each time they wanted to try new stuff.
I wouldn't bet on a release of that tool anytime.

This sounds interesting, I can't wait to see what it does!  :)

Awww, that would have been the very best!!! A release of the theme editor, able to change the TI-nspire theme TI has "forced" on us. But it looks not to be.

Maybe someone will eventually make a custom theme editor? (Although that wouldn't be as useful as development tools)

Custom backgrounds will be nice (instead of that plain black background that somewhat resembles older iPhones)

I doubt that custom backgrounds are possible ( because of the way the home screen is programmed).
But you never know with all the Ndless hackers around :)

I still sense Juju will try to make a custom theme with flying ponies (like on his android phone) if such tool ever arrives O.O

This looks pretty interesting. I'm looking out to a 'Rick-Astley'-theme. :D
