Title: Axe Contest ending soon!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 14, 2010, 02:48:54 pm
A reminder to everyone who is participating to Omnimaga's Axe Parser Programming Contest: the deadline is approaching extremly fast. 1 day, 9 hours and 11 minutes after posting this news article, the deadline will have arrived. Do not wait at the very last minute to submit your entry. This will not only speed up the start of the judging process, but this will avoid you bad surprises (such as RAM Clears, missing files or bugs) near the end. Backup frequently (not just the RAM) and good luck! We can't wait to see what you will come up with!

Don't forget to send your game source code, Axe version used and instructions to 2010axecontest [AT] gmail [DOT] com. Opon arrival, entries will be scanned to make sure they abide by the rules stated here (http://ourl.ca/5976), then thursday night or friday evening, the entries will be made public for voting, while we judge the entries on our side.

Wow, this is coming up fast x.x
I really need to bust my ass on Advance Wars, it looks great, but isn't done.  I'm on an old version of Axe, too, on account of not being able to send things to my calculator.  I won't have time to upgrade my Axe version.

And just to add a clarification: While I do encourage open-source, if you want your source code to remain private for any reason, please indicate that in the submission email.  You still have to submit the source code to the judges to make sure there was no asm usage or other violations of the rules, but only the executable will be made public with your entry.

I love porting games :) You'll find almost 100% of all my games are ports.  This excludes only a few such as Serenity.

Yeah, and I sent a file report so they move the levels in the TI-83/84 Plus BASIC Games Levels directory. I tried an early version of the game and it wasn't that bad, but nice flood of ticalc BASIC games section I see here with all levels x.x

Good luck! Generally, it is worse if your zip file is extremly large, though. Otherwise stuff almost sends instantly.

Ouch I hope your parents won't tell you to get off the computer/calc for the entire day. That would suck x.x

Good luck on the signing issue. Otherwise don't worry about it since you already sent the source anyway.

Okay - Just submitted my entry.  DJ, if you've received it, could you tell me?
Received, along with SirCmpwn and Michael_Lee. I received Deep's and Ikkerens' in the last few days. If someone else sent something and you aren't listed in the previous sentence, re-send it to the e-mail in the news (make sure to change [AT] to @ lol :P)

Just a quick update:  I just discovered that I sent you the wrong version of my game.  I think I sent version 9.2 which has a few bugs, not 9.5.
I'm at school right now, so could you wait a couple of hours before judging mine?  (I'm going to resubmit after school ends)
Or does this break the rules?

I think I'll pull together something like one of my early Axe games, but better.  Unfortunately, Blox will not be done for the contest, but I'll still work on it. :)

DJ, if we enter something, can we still vote on our favorite? ;D

* ZTrumpet wishes all the participants good luck! :D

Grr i don't think I will be able to finish. I will do my best, but would it be ok to enter what i have by the end of the day, even if its not actually complete?

Edit: Attached my title screen, and I lost the game because I made my signature too huge and noticable.

Hmmm. Mayhaps I should do what Raylin did for the Cemetech contest and valiantly submit a last minute entry.......

If so, it is a tunnel game, so I'd probably lose points for originality, but it does have a lobster difficulty mode. ;)

I thought it took you an hour?

Besides, I had already made the code after the contest was announced, because Blur was actually my original entry idea. I just touched it up a little just now.
Plus, it can't hurt to try, right?

Title: Re: Axe Contest ending soon!

It's basically a tunnel game, but it does feature a lobster difficulty mode. ;D It's much harder than the normal difficulty, plus there is no high score for lobster difficulty.

When I first read this post, I thought you lost the game you were submitting :P Well, after I figured that out, I lost the game.

Also, I just noticed your sig, Raylin (the TI chars). It's brilliant! Thanks!

Btw I have scanned 4 of the entries so far. All of them met the rules requirements. I got 3 more while I was at work. I'll scan those too now.

In case someone failed to send it properly, here are the people who submitted their entry so far:

_player1537
Deep Thought -Scanned/Approved
FinaleTI
Ikkerens -Scanned/Approved
LordConiputer
Michael Lee -Scanned/Approved
SirCmpwn -Scanned/Approved

(Scanned/Approved means no ASM/BASIC/BBC Basic code was found, it's a game and it is compilable.)

I'll check the 3 others (and the next ones I'll receive soon)

Accepted games will be announced for voting tomorrow after work.

I just sent mine in  ;D

Its lacking alot of things that an experienced programmer would be able to do but for my first actual game that i put serious effort into, i think it didn't come out that bad.

Hu h, wouldn't scanning for BBC BASIC code be pointless, though? It wouldn't even run without the app, which people wouldn't expect to be needed.

MINE's IN

EDIT: Wait, am i late? it's 9:39 right now, im at GMT-7, and you said 12 GMT-5. and yet the post times above say the deadline is already past...

DOUBLE EDIT: stupid arizona... we dont follow the convention of daylight savings :'(
Title: Re: Axe Contest ending soon!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 16, 2010, 01:14:10 am
There are no daylight saving in Arizona? O.o I was sure all of america did.

That said, due to the contest plans and risks of Gmail delays, we planned to allow entries sent within the hour past the deadline, though. We set the deadline one hour earlier to make sure people won't wait at the very last minute, risking having Gmail sending their entry too late. In fact, Snake_X entry arrived on my side 15 minutes after he told me he sent it. As of 1 AM it's over, though. Nothing else is getting accepted.

As for some stats:

The first contest entry we received was on September 10th, 2 months and 10 days after the contest announcment and 6 days before the deadline. The next two arrived tuesday. Everything else arrived today, 8 of which arrived in the past 5 hours. I don't think I need to tell you why I was so picky on doing backups lately <.<

On a side note, everyone is free to post their entry (or updates) to public now. However, don't forget to vote based on the entry version that was uploaded to the contest for the poll, though.
