Title: Axe Parser now has a 68K brother: NewProg
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 18, 2010, 12:22:00 pm
As Axe Parser (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?board=71.0) is being developed for the TI-83 Plus series, with fully functional builds available for download, another language, this time for 68K calculators, has been developed: NewProg (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/426/42635.html). In a similar fashion to Axe Parser, NewProg lets you use the built-in on-calc TI-BASIC editor to write your programs and you compile them afterward. The language syntax is also very similar to TI-BASIC but allows for more, such as grayscale, sprites and memory access.

There are also two other 68K alternatives avaliable since 2005: ETP Studio (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/367/36700.html) and GFA BASIC (http://www.tigen.org/gfabasic/index.php), the later of which can also be programmed on-calc, but for the most part, the available documentations are in french, both projects are no longer maintained and they contains a lot of bugs.

I hope it brings cool projects for 68k calculators.
There is lot to unleash in 68k I think.

I agree. Given what C and ASM can do on these machines I wonder what this new language could do. Plus I have to wonder if people really pushed 68k calcs to their limits yet, seeing what Calc84maniac can do on a less powerful z80 calc. People claims 8 level grayscale flickers, yet have they tried displaying it in the same way Calc84 did in chips challenge?

Yeah, z80 line happens to be more appealing to experiments because there are more users base.
I have some doubts that 68k will be explored like the z80 were. Who knows, the TI-81 was hacked when no one remembered it and a shell was developed.

I wonder how the Nspire projects will grow. Certainly is needed some easy tuts on mounting a development environment for C and ASM. It is also needed quite urgently a higher language.

Well, one major issue is that someone I will not name (but that almost everyone who frequents #tcpa or #ti knows like me) made people leave the 68k community with his fight instigating, so there have been fewer and fewer programmers joining than ones leaving due to drama. Also, the TI-Nspire might be doing a lot of competition to the 68k line. 68k programming used to be very popular, though, and had a lot of great games released. Back in 2003-2005, ticalc.org had to split the 68K POTY in two polls because there were way too many entries. Once voting was done, another poll with the 4 most voted entries of each polls was done, where the best entry was chosen. I wonder if any people here remember these days. I don't think this ever happened to the TI-83+ line.
