Title: Casio fx-9860G Tribute Video
Post by: Builderboy on February 15, 2011, 11:14:12 pm
Aside from the Prizm, Casio rarely gets any facetime around here at Omnimaga.  Most of the earlier calcs don't even have a powerful enough Basic Language to create games like (some) TI calcs have.  The Casio fx-9860 is Casio's second newest calculator after the Prism, and actually has a very nice platform for developing games.  It has a form of Basic just like the Prism (although a little faster) and Assembly accessed through Add-ins.  This video tribute shows that while we may be primarily a TI site, TI does not rule exclusively when it comes to games:

There are just as many diverse games as you could find on TiCalc.  There are 3D games such as wolfenstein and PongoBall, there are physics based games such as Pool and Indestructo Tank, there are the classic arcade games such as pacman and space invaders, there is even a pokemon clone, as well as a city simulating game.

Clearly, Casio is a powerful competitor to the TI game industry, despite their somewhat less known games in our circles here.   The topic on Caso Kingdom for this video can be found here http://casiokingdom.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1751 and many other projects and threads can be found elsewhere on the same site.

It does have some pretty cool games...
Are those all on casiocalc/casiokingdom?

I wish on the 9860G there was something like Axe Parser, it would really rule. Some of these games are great. The reason why there aren't as many Casio games as on TI is because TI has a monopoly and Casio BASIC is much slower than TI-BASIC.

There's less of a community...
Casio calc can clearly be pushed very far, by the looks of it, compared to TI calcs.  They just need the programmers, it seems to me.
Can't do much about the monopoly, but the games the community has control over ;D

After all, the FX-9860G has a 29 MHz processor which can be clocked up. It's just that the community is so small that there are fewer people interested into hacking these calcs or creating even cooler stuff. The only time the Casio community seemed to have higher activity than the TI community was in 2008.

I can just imagine...what the BrandonW of casio calcs would do O.O

Indeed. That said it seems that SimonLothar on Casiokingdom is very dedicated into hacking the Prizm and 9860G, so maybe he could help a lot.

TI monopoly ... not for long.  >:D i'm now trying to convince my school to endorse the Prizm for next school year. Showing capabilities of what you couldn't do before and teaching teachers (isn't that ironic) on how to use it. Assuming that TI will eventually cancel the 83+, I don't want my school to then ask students to buy nspire's. Sooner or later we will need many more Prizm game programmers.

Now I wish that could have some sort of snowball effect and spread accross schools.

For sure I'll stick to BASIC unless Axe comes out for the prizm, though, and programmable on-calc.

Looks like they got a lot of talented programmers over there. I remember 4nic8 was quite the programmer too, just a lack of participation over on the casio stuff.

Added fx-9860g emulator to the long list of Prizm software yet to be written. but Actually that shouldn't be too bad to program.

And don't forget: The fx-9860GII, fx-9860GII SD, fx-9860G AU PLUS and fx-9860G Slim also have a backlight display (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNPDW7ECQR8&feature=related) like the Prizm.
So you can do some nice blinking in your games, too! ;)

I thought in the 9860gii series it was controlled by a manual switch...
I wouldn't know, though.  My "9860" is actually a hacked 9750 so it doesn't have a backlight :P
Hopefully anything having to do with the backlight wouldn't crash it or something...
Oh well.  Got a good price on it ;)

EDIT by posting this, I grow out of 'evilness' yay

Yeah I remember him, Deimos too. Too bad EPS forums were so buggy, if they were fixed along with the server issues people wouldn't have left (except maybe 4nic8 who lost interest in calcs). Deimos made several cool MLC games for the Algebra FX series. Also an example of great AFX ASM game is Shadow World.

On a side note the AFX is another cool calc for ASM games, since it supports add-ins too. However, its BASIC is even slower than the old Casio calcs and the Prizm, ASM isn't as fast as on the 9860G and the Flash chip in these calcs is so cheap that they break after 3 or 4 years.

Also somebody else made a new Casio vid, but it mostly showcases the same games as the previous one:

Of course, we just need Casio programmers to come over!   We may be primarily a TI-site, but it's because most programmers are TI.  We always welcome Casio programmers to this site.

Thanks for posting my vid here :D
I've always admired TI games tribute videos, and I wanted make the same thing for Casio games.
We have now a large enough games collection (but actually we can't make animated screenshot with grayscales, I'm working on an on-calc gif builder for that).

About Axe-like project on fx-9860G, Kristaba is working on it :P
He already done an on-calc assembler.

About community, yes, we have a lot of newbies Basic programmers, but very few good C/asm games programmers. In the other hand, for great games, we are fortunate to have a large audience ^_^

I really liked the film, PierrotLL.  Great job on it, and welcome to Omnimaga! ;D

Yeah both vids are nice.

One thing I remember with the AFX is that the Wing100 emu only supported 3 levels of gray, so 4 level grayscale games looked weird. I remember the 9860 emus didn't support gray, though. Someone should make a third-party emulator like we have for TI calcs where the user can tune the grayscale and LCD settings how he wants and speed up or slow down emulation. An animaged GIF builder would be cool too, since CalcCapture software is kinda slow. X.x

Welcome here by the way. :D
