Title: CGPN: The Calculator Game Programming Newsletter
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on January 29, 2011, 09:29:05 pm
(http://www.omnimaga.org/newsletter/cgpnlogo.png)

Thanks to Yunhua98's initiative, Omnimaga is proud to announce the resurrection of the newsletter. Back in 2005, we had the Zilak Newsletter, by Anthony Loven, but only one issue (http://www.omnimaga.org/oldsite/vol1iss1.pdf) was published. This time our newsletter is going under the CGPN acronym, which means "Calculator Game Programming Newsletter". Like the title says, it will cover news about calculator games, development of them but also discoveries and innovations all accross the calculator community.

It will be some sort of review of what happened accross the TI community in recent times and it will be possible to subscribe to receive it via e-mail. In fact, if you already had e-mail notifications enabled, you probably already received a copy of the January 2011 newsletter in HTML format. Notifications can be enabled or disabled via your forum profile (Profile->Notifications and Email->Check/Uncheck "Receive forum announcements and important notifications by email").

We currently plan for a monthly newsletter, which will be published around the end of every month. In the future, there will most likely be new additions such as a list of featured releases for that month and at the start of every season there may even be an interview with a TI programmer.

Anyway, the first CGPN issue (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=27) can be found in the recently created Newsletter section (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=articles;cat=9) located in the Miscellaneous (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=ezportal;sa=page;p=7) page and there are also HTML (http://www.omnimaga.org/newsletter/jan11.html) and plain text (http://www.omnimaga.org/newsletter/jan11.txt) copies available there.

I hope you enjoy!

He knew? O.O I guess Eeems or Yunhua98 probably brought it up in Cemetech channel before I posted it, although I think I talked about a newsletter not so long ago.

Beats me, I just assumed that letter == letter, unless he was talking about a different letter I dont know about

Oh, maybe. Actually UTI former staff JBirk/Netwizz e-mailed TI recently so maybe that was the letter he talked about.

Enjoyed the letter, good plane of attack you have. Keep everyone updated, and it will help keep people in the loop (aka community). Great job guys!

I never mentioned this anywhere else.  ???  also, if anyone has an awesome article they want to share, they could pm me or another staff who wants to help.  ;)

Thanks. You can thank Yunhua98 and the others mostly for that, though, since they were the ones who added the most in this edition. I changed some stuff like the formatting and corrected some mistakes (such as changing calcNET to CALCnet), as well as tested the HTML version (which is why admins got two copies of the newsletter if they were subscribed).

Now we have to make sure this won't be the only issue of the CGPN published though.  ;)

Yeah true. :P Interviews would be nice, too, since it has been a while since the last one in the English TI community.

What a nice surprise in my email inbox this evening.

I truly enjoyed reading the CGPN. I cannot wait for the next one. :)

Initially I thought mostly about some of the people who revolutionarized the calc world with things such as Ndless or gCn and the like, but there would most likely be interviews with other people as well. It might also depend how hard it is to contact the person via a real-time chat medium.

Now that my previously discontinued cage match entry has been mentioned in the newletter, I feel obligated to continue it. Oh well, Prizm hacking can wait.

Oh, wow. I feel bad, now! Wow. I thought the calc on the internet thing by Kerm was a fake news thing! Holy crap that is AWESOME!

Lol nope it's real. Years ago some people had doubts. I personally never doubted this project because I knew Kerm was dedicated. I just wasn't sure if it was possible but as Kerm skills increased I became confident he would manage to do it eventually. 3 years later, he did. Note that Omnimaga fake news are written in brown/orange text, by the way.

Yeah, I know that, but it sounded so impossible I just figured you forgot to color the text :D

Wow.

Wait, what? TICalc released a fake news about MirageOS 1.3 beta... Wow, what a coincidence... I happen to have the source...

Lol :P http://www.ticalc.org/archives/news/articles/14/143/143773.html

Back then they even made the Mirage file info page redirect to a RickRoll.

It was originally not marked fake news. Quote:

Actually Brandon is working on 1.3!

On the interview note, I would love to see interviews of people from the start of the community..Like Pattrick Davidson for phoenix, Joe for Ion etc...What they think of the community now (i guess many would not know), but show them some projects and see what they think...

are any of them still around?  They would be interesting to interview...

Pattrick stops around ticalc with an update every now and again. I bet he could be reached.

That's a great idea. Make sure you don't end up bothering some busy people, though. I know some of the great coders of years past have moved on :(
Title: Re: CGPN: The Calculator Game Programming Newsletter

Well it would be nice, since ticalc.org did it in the past. We should also interview people who are still involved, though, since a lot of the people around here were only around for 1 or 2 years right now.

Just actually sat down and read through most of the newsletter. I quite like it, personally.

I think it's a great idea.

We could always call it a 'Newscaster' ;)

Definitely. The "Omnimaga Newscaster." Sounds nice, doesn't it?

Congratulations on getting this first issue done! I hope there are many more in the future :)

Much thanks for the whole paragraph about my project, it is definitely greatly appreciated. You've motivated me to fix the crash on exit bug, that's for sure!

PS: Yeah, I'm kind of slow at noticing these things... or checking my email, for that matter.

Glad you liked it :D. As for your project it was inevitable it would get mentionned, it deserved it. :D

I only read it today. The newsletter is simple but very well done. Great work of the editors. It has links to to projects and everything.
You definitely should do it monthly if there are enough news. If not, do every 3 months.

I hope that it attracts users who signed on Omnimaga and left right after. The games and news were exciting IMHO, specially the Nspire part, I don't know what others think of it.

Edit: I almost forgot, I am very thankful because I can't keep track of all calculators projects and with the newsletters, I certainly won't miss the most important ones.

Thanks, and also thanks for Yunhua98 for the initiative. I know TsukasaZX had a similar idea before, though, but I am happy somebody finally did it.

By the way, typically, the newsletter  will come out on the  last Sunday of every month or the first Sunday of the next one, depending of which one is closer. Sometimes, it might be delayed for a few days, though, for example if we got several news. In other words, the next newsletter will most likely be on February 27th (Ndless release 1st anniversary... maybe it would be worth bringing it up?), then the next one on April 3rd.

so,,,what happened to the newsletter?

I think it was discontinued after I retired from staff. I tried to convince Yunhua98 to continue it and staff to help but from what I could gather, they decided to move on.

Yeah, something like that. Yunhua98 lacked time or something and the rest of the staff didn't followed on, so it died.

Yeah.  We were going to do some kind of weakly news recap though.  Idk what happened to that.  And later it seemed to just be copies of the news articles.  :/

Well I am unsure if weekly would be a good idea, since we regularly move stuff to news or post articles, such as earlier with Tetrizm by Kerm. An idea could be some sort of bi-yearly newsletter or something (one in Jan and the other in July) but not necessarily in newsletter form.

Yunhua98 was maintaining it but he became to busy with other things. As of now no one has picked it up so it's inactive. There was some discussion, but I don't think there are any plans to continue it at present.
