Title: Contest 2013 - Results (finally)

Hey Everyone!

We apologise for how long it took, but the results are finally in and tallied. If you need a quick reminder, this year's competition was exclusively for the monochrome TI 83+/84+ series of calculators. we had two categories:

Each entry in both categories was then judged in two ways: by a team of staff acting as judges (according to the criteria listed here (http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=17113.0;attach=16101)), and via a forum public vote. The results from both sections were then determined by adding the results of each. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries in each category (as per described here (http://ourl.ca/19647)). Now, without further ado, here are our three winners from each category!

Axe/Assembly/Hybrid BASIC
Game Title -Total Score -Author
Tipover367.5Koen "Keoni29" van Vliet
Jezzball344.5Christopher Mitchell
Pik0Pik0338.5Zero44

Pure BASIC
Game Title -Total Score -Author
Plot+367.5Caleb Hansberry
Binary Puzzle309.25Sorunome
Toy Wars269.75William Shipley

And that's it! A hearty congratulations to our winners as well as a big thank you to everyone who participated; We hope to see you all again next year!

I've attached the full results below if you want to see who placed where and for what reasons in more detail.

EDIT: If the winners would please PM geekboy1011 their addresses, he will handle shipping you your prizes!

Congrats everyone! Btw, how many people voted finally?
Title: Re: Contest 2013 - Results (finally)
Post by: CalebHansberry on December 15, 2013, 09:15:55 pm
Indeed, some info I'd like to know is, how many people voted, what exactly they voted for, and also our details from the judges - rubric and what ever. I'll post my brief review and thoughts on each program in a bit.
Interesting that only one thing changed since the preliminary round - Jezzball and Pik0Pik0 switched. One must feel sad for Zero44, therefore, poor guy. :/ To have a position and then lose it. I am thankful that I was allowed to keep my position; this win means a lot to me! It is the first thing I've ever won!

By the way, so - may I have permission to use OmnomIRC yet? In honor of winning the contest?

Everyone has 'permission' to use OmnomIRC, its just #omnimaga on an irc client like effnet
Its the irc client built in to omnimaga that you need 50(?) posts for.
Title: Re: Contest 2013 - Results (finally)
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 15, 2013, 10:12:45 pm
I think it's 20 or 40 posts. It says it's 40 but I think someone managed to use it at 20 once (perhaps a bug displaying the wrong limit).

Also yeah all previous Omni contests had public voting + judging combos except maybe 2012, but this year I think that fewer people voted. I could be wrong, though.
Title: Re: Contest 2013 - Results (finally)
Post by: Geekboy1011 on December 15, 2013, 10:15:16 pm
we had a total of 29 people vote the attached html file explains all the judges scoring the only thing it doesn't show is the public vote which I will keep that one private as that's just going to be my choice you can see the scores each entry was allotted from the public vote in the rubric again.

Oh that's good to hear! I was worried because a previous post said there were not enough votes. I was worried there were like 4-5 votes max.

By the way, do you plan to update the t-shirt design on Redbubble too or will it be just the sent copy that will be updated?
Title: Re: Contest 2013 - Results (finally)

I belive it will be updated I honestly don't handle the red bubble account.

Feeling disappointed.. I was 2nd, as I wanted, with a nice amount of points above the third, and went third, surely 'cause I haven't been here to defend my entry :(

I don't even know if I want to get my prize or give it to another one. Maybe it will depend of what this T-shirt looks like :/

There are three colors and different types of models. I would wait a bit to see if Shmibs or someone else will move the logo up, though, like the contest version that will be shipped.

Most companies charges so much for custom t-shirts. Even 1and1 t-shirts were brutally expensive, so if we wanted to charge a reasonable amount, we got no profit. Reverbnation is bad as well and their t-shirt design tool sucks.

i just need to find out what the password is again and i can do that :P

EDIT: also, the base price for shirts from redbubble is ~$21 USD, i think, but the creator can add a bit on top of that price that he gets (there need to be at least $50 owed before they'll give you any of it, though :P)

EDIT 2: sorunome, do you think the logo should be moved up? if so, how far? i don't actually have a physical copy, so it's hard to tell. also, should anything else be changed? is anything too blurry/weird-looking?

@zero44
I feel very sad about you, I can assure you (as mentioned in former post)! And... Kerm having such an unbelievably large collection of calculators... That didn't come out sounding very good. :/ Hope someone understands what I mean.

I actually like it the way it is.....it is only a bit weird it says nowhere 'omnimaga' :P
I guess it could be moved up a bit, but only a bit.

Ouch.. Didn't noticed that C. Mitchell was Kerm.. (I know it, though)
Actually I have 'only' 6 calcs, but I'll sell my Prizm and one Clickpad.
Some 3rd and 4th z80 would have been nice to test my n-calcs wiring experiments...

T-shirts looks nice.. Will take it..

I would have preferred the T-shirt over the TI83+. You can't get a tshirt like that anywhere else. You can pick up a used 83+ for the same price as the tshirt after all :)

Well you can order the t shirt whenever you want, but you can't (at least in France) easily find a 83+SE.

Yeah I got lucky when I found my 83+SE ViewScreen brand new and boxed. I paid €55 for it shipped because I thought it was worth this much unlike Nspires./me runs

Here are my thoughts on the entries, on order of how much I liked them:
ASM Programs:
1. Jezzball
I love Jezzball!  This is a faithful enough rendition, much closer to the original than the other Jezzball that has been made. It was quite enjoyable to play.  Though yes, it is troubled by a lack of originality. This one will definitely be a keeper one my calc!
2. Tip Over
I thought this was a pretty clever game, though I've never played the computer version. I (being rather bad at games) did not make it through all the levels, which is a good thing. It is quite enjoyable to play, and would deserve a place among PuzzPack.  Kudos for having so many levels!  A keeper on my calc.
3. Omniblade
Found this to be pretty fun. It was very similar to Phoenix (amusingly the exact same charge that was leveled at my program Adropod - but we all like Phoenix, for all that!).  Mainly I have to say I liked the minigames!  This one will be a keeper on my calc.*
4. Furious Pong
This... was weird.  The graphics were impressive: the most impressive of the whole contest, in fact.  And I must say, the Normal mode was the best calculator pong I've played yet!  But the "furious" part was, frankly, lost on me.  I always beat the AI anyways. Mostly just 1:Found the animations of like 100 balls flying around amusing and 2:Found the massive management of balls, paddles, scores, and shaking the screen very impressive. A good game of pong with a few balls, and a good demo for Axe!
5. Piko Piko
Sadly I must say (as this whole review set is based on my own opinions, nonobjective) that the premise of this game isn't my cup of tea.  Good graphics, of course, and good gameplay for what it does.
6. Advanced Powder Toy
This game could show some promise.  As everyone knows, it'll need more specks; just the way it is. And active mechanisms (like fans) would change it quite a bit. So really, I think it's interesting - very cool as far as it goes - but would need to go even farther to win.  It is pretty fun to mess around with anyway.
7. Digger
...what? :P  Sadly, not only was there not enough of it in place for me to grasp the concept (that or it just moved too fast), but after running it twice, it refused to run anymore, even after clearing the RAM.  So I dunno. I didn't get a good look at it.

TI-Basic Entries:
1. Plot+
Thought I wouldn't be so base as to like my own program better than everyone else's? Too bad. Waluigi time.
2. Toy Wars
I had a pleasant surprise with this one, imagining it would be "just a stupid Basic game". (I need to browse the TI-Basic section more!) It was fairly enjoyable though! I was happy to see an AI (or 5), and the game mechanics are well thought out. Of course it ran pretty slow, but I'm used to it.  Saly, it threw a memory error due to too many nested loops whenever I was about to conquer a foe!  Also, as with many extensive TI-Basic programs, it required a huge slew of variables like Matrices, Pics, Subprograms, Lists, etc.
3. Breakout
Like ToyWars, I had low expectations. I thought it probably would be text-based!  But, it actually ran surprisingly smooth.  While it isn't possible for it to compete with ASM, for Basic it is good! It was crippled by a lack of originality, though. And it would be nice to use less subprograms. But, congrats to the maker for making it as smooth-running, phisicswise, as it is!
4. Binary Puzzle
Sadly, Binary Puzzles are also really not my cup of tea. It was a decent (binary puzzles are pretty basic) implementation though, with obviously a ton of effort put into it!
5. War Games
Yeah, totally. I had fun with this one changing the response statement to 'Too bad. Waluigi time.'  Is it based off an actual computer program like that?
*What in the world is my calculator like?! Yeah, I'm a game packrat. I keep anything I think I might ever want to play - a total of about 50 programs by now.  DoorsCS 7, with its folders and AutoRunFromArchive, is what makes it possible, though even it staggers often under the load.
Title: Re: Contest 2013 - Results (finally)
Post by: chickendude on January 20, 2014, 09:12:10 pm
I don't know that i ever ran it more than once :P The problem is probably that most shells copy all the changes made during execution back to the program when you exit, and the program expects everything to be like when you first send it over. You'd have to resend it for it to run again :/

Anyway, thanks for taking the trouble to actually load it up, i know it's a bit disappointing as i didn't finish very much :)

As for lack of originality, I think it was because the goal of the contest was the roots of calc gaming, meaning staying true to the big classics.

There are regulations on what can and can't be shipped. Batteries are on the list of things you can't ship depending on what they are made of. It is considered a hazard by USPS for some reason.
Title: Re: Contest 2013 - Results (finally)
Post by: Keoni29 on February 12, 2014, 02:02:11 pm
So it won't be possible to ship them out with batteries in them? That is sad to hear since the CSE has an internal battery.
Title: Re: Contest 2013 - Results (finally)
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 12, 2014, 03:50:30 pm
Wow I hope color models don't have to be shipped with no battery. I am surprised they're doing that, though, considering I bought my CSE from USA and it came with a battery. It was USPS shipping too. I guess it's fine for older models, though, since you can just buy them at the dollar store. TI rechargeable batteries are much harder to find. I usually prefer to buy used calcs without batteries in them too in case the seller left them inside or nearby for years and they end up leaking during shipping.

Small rechargeable  consumer-type Lithium-ion batteries are mailable!
-No more than 3 batteries are allowed per mailpiece.
-Each secondary cell must not contain more than 20 Wh (Watt-hour rating) per cell.
-Each secondary battery must not exceed 100 Wh per battery.

Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 12, 2014, 05:23:56 pm
Actually, according to a forum I read, is it true that the battery have to be inside the device? I could maybe understand loose battery issues since they can be crushed easier outside an electronic device and crushing a phone battery can short-circuit it, resulting in fire and explosions.

Yes they need to be shipped with the device they are used in. Not sure if they need to be inside though.

You could just try to do it in person at the post office. Sometimes online tools are more limited because you can't try to negotiate with a computer, unlike with a real person.

This sucks. Is it possible that shipping those items might actually be impossible and that you might have to get a refund for them and replace prizes with digital ones such as Amazon gift cards?

UnitedTI had issues shipping prizes for one of their contest too, but it was because the winner was Canadian.

Thanks remaking labels today to ship tomorrow or Monday.  Been lots of headaches with usps but alas they are the only affordable option

The issue with other companies like Fedex/UPS is that with some delivery services, the contest winner might end up having to pay extra fees himself when he receives the item. This is why I prefer USPS (although it's still possible to happen if they make you pay the taxes, but it's nowhere as terrible as with private shipping companies). Eg UPS wanted to charge me $70 of fees for a TI-84+CSE and required me to go pick up my item in another city (at that time the UPS store wasn't open in mine) from 8 AM to 5 PM on weekdays, on which I mostly worked and would have needed to spend an extra $12 in public transit.

With USPS, I only spent an extra $20 in extra fees for my HP Prime, which were the Canadian/Quebec sales taxes. It depends how the item is packaged, though. Some Ebay sellers ship their stuff as gift, but as an actual store that could look suspicious.

That's just america/canada for you... won't happen in Europe, no worries keoni ;)
ps: not meaning to insult Americans/Canadians, just ranting on the general weirdness of some things in these countries :p

Blame 9/11.
That. You can basically pin a ton of crap on this "incident".

Ah ok, I hope they can get their prizes fine. I know willrandship is on a church missionary mission for 2 years so he might be hard to reach at a stable address. I don't know about Zero. You could try e-mailing him or PMing him on TI-Planet, though.

Opening a 84+CSE package is possible?? O.O

J/k, I actually managed to open mine too. It was ridiculously hard, though.
