Title: CTRL+R! We have a new banner!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 16, 2010, 04:11:40 pm
For those who have their browsers set to not update their cache very often, you should update it now on Omnimaga. After using Master Jc's Omnimaga: The Coders Of Tomorrow banner for almost 4 years and only slightly modifying it in August 2008, we have decided to update the site with a brand new one that reflects more our actual projects and major products. It was quite hard to fit as many projects and products as possible in it, though, since I tried to make it 1024x768-friendly (web standards). In it you'll find everything from F-Zero to Illusiat 13 as well as some characters and monsters from various RPGs, Calc84maniac TI-Nspire stuff and... er... Netham45.

UPDATE: I have changed the forum theme a little to match the new banner. Unfortunately, because of SMF limitations and glitches, it seems like we'll have to stick to one single theme, though. Sorry to people who prefered the old banner and theme :P. You may need to CTRL+R (or CTRL+F5) again to see the changes, though.

That's awesome!   (Thanks for including Elmgon. ;D )  I really like the inclusion of Reuben Quest, Illusiat 13, ROL, Shift and Serenity.  Hmm, looks like I'm glad basic games are on there. :D
It looks really nice, though my favorite part is right above the "ma" in Omnimaga...

sweet! I like it!
we should probably try to update the theme to a bit of a darker colour to match the banner.

Very nice. Definitely reflects the spirit of the TI gaming community more than the old banner. :)

On a completely humble note: If you want to use any designs or maps from Escheron in site banners or propaganda, you're welcome to do so. I don't mind at all.

That's a pretty cool banner! Great job.

Erh... is that wireframe Link on the left side?

I actually like the current theme, but prehaps we could have an alternate newer theme?

Hmm, yeah...I like the theme too, but if we just changed the colours up to be a bit darker then it would fit the banner and it wouldn't be too different.

I'm pretty sure DJ Omnimaga himself made it, and I believe their was talk about alternate themes before and it would be more work to keep everything updated. Although I like the current theme, the awesomeness of that banner just requires a new theme as well  :P
If someone is willing to shop a mock-up I might be able to see what I can do about a new theme  ;)

On a completely humble note: If you want to use any designs or maps from Escheron in site banners or propaganda, you're welcome to do so. I don't mind at all.
Unfortunately, I finally couldn't fit everything in the banner so I left out community projects, otherwise, E:SoR, CaDan and some other staff projects as well as TLM would probably have made it. I was even planning to re-include some of the old TI RPGs from the archives, like one of our older banner we had in 2005 and early 2006.

There will most likely be a video of E:SoR, though. I'm just (impatiently) waiting for battle animated screenies :P

To awnser Eeems, I had thoughts about this. The theme would most likely remain similar, though, but it would probably have darker colors. In this case, the old one would be kept as alternate theme, though, for those who don't like dark themes or themes with high contrast.

It's certain this light theme would remain as option, though. The theme we had on the old board was a bit darker and certain people stated this as a reason why they didn't sign up on the site.

As for Art Of Camelot request, unfortunately, we have to live with web standards. Today, the standard is 1024x768 and 1280x1024. Most people still have 4:3 or small displays, meaning I have to make sure the banner will display completly on such resolutions. The price to pay is that on larger resolutions, there will be empty spaces on each sides. Your screenshot (which I removed due to a 500 internal server error caused by an attachment resizer bug) indicated that you didn't refresh your cache, though, with CTRL+R (or CTRL+F5), because the old binary background still seemed to show. It's supposed to be a black bg, now. The banner is also supposed to be centered. It looks much better with the black background, centered, than with the gray one, even on my 1920x1080. (For those who missed the request it was in the post editing box in his attachment)

Iambian: yup it is ^^

Also btw I made the banner. TsukasaZX and Aaroneusthegreat wanted to help at first but I wanted to give it a try myself because I haven't done any banner in ages. As for the previous banner, I liked it because it fitted the theme well, but it only had one single calc-related element, which was a 83+, and it felt weird because it showed a RAM Cleared message :P (we still have a similar pic, though, but there's so much calc stuff in the banner now that we won't focus as much on it :P)

@Omni: yea, nevermind. Page wasn't displaying correctly for me at first; the banner wasn't centered and gray was showing. It looks fine now. Also, didn't realize my post updated,(It gave me an error apparently due to my attachment ._. my bad... ) I was going to leave the screen shot out because I realized that it was indeed displaying correctly after I left this topic.

well I removed the screenshot since the topic broke due to the attachment glitch. I had the same thing happen in the desktop topic once

Yay new theme!  ^^ I like it a lot :) especialy how it includes all the projects that are being worked on right now, its a nice update

The polygon thing is actually Link from Calc84 TI-Nspire 3D stuff (for those who don't frequent IRC).

Also thanks, but finally I don't like the background image on the forums :(, it seems more like a christmas style image and I feel it doesn't fit with the banner and the rest.

On a side note this theme isn't fully finished either, there migth still be some changes. The first step was to make gradients darker to match the banner. Next is the plain colors, then maybe make the lighter gradient even darker, since it still is too light for my needs, and I want to get rid of the green-ish color in it

I'd personally like a slightly darker background, I don't really like the almost-white light blue.

I do like the banner, tho.

The banner has just the right amount of Netham45s and Rickrolls! Perfect! :D

I love how the background stays the same as you scroll.  Really cool! :D

I was a bit relunctant about a fixed background at first, because I witnessed the horror of Myspace custom profiles and on the old board I remember the forum scrolling framerate was choppy x.x, so I was afraid using a massive 1024x768 bg image that is fixed would make things even worse. To my surprise, even on my old comp I got no slow downs, though. Also the bg is 315 KB ish so not too big either. I didn't want to have a 1 MB bg, not a good web design practice. Our design is alerady not so common style in the first place lol :P (most sites with dark bg have the entire board layout made so it's dark too, like white text on dark blue. Sites that has light content but dark backgrounds often wraps the entire content in a lighter div with plain color.

On another note: I finally fixed CODE tags. It was about time, after 2 years. Text as so friggin small before x.x. I also made sure pinned topics and child boards stands out more by using a more different blue. Had it been possible to use a different color in both, I wouls have made pinned topics with an extremly bright background like #00FFFF :P

Ug, I like it a lot, but the new background IS giving me horrible horrible scrolling problems X.x

hmm, I'm not having any problems...what browser are you using Builderboy?
Title: Re: CTRL+R! We have a new banner!

mhmm strange, on the old forums (2005-07 designs) I had choppy scrolling on my Pentium II 350 MHz but nothing too bad. We had fixed backgrounds back then too. On my other comp (Intel Celeron 2.93 GHz from 2005) I also had some slow scrolling but more like 20-30 frames per seconds. I tested this new background on that old comp again and I have absolutely no slow downs during scrolling. Couldn't it be your internet browser? Also do you browse at native text size/zoom? Browsing sites like this at higher or lower zooming can be very slow. I tested the background on my old comp to be certain it won't slow things down too much so I am unsure why you would get any extreme problems when I got full 60 fps on a 5 years old comp with crappy video card x.x

Either your browser has issues with fixed backgrounds, either your comp is loaded with viruses and slow things down or your video card is either too old or even dying x.x

Btw I tested in Opera 9 and 10, no slow downs. In Firefox 3.x , smooth scrolling was disabled so it's hard to tell but scrolling seemed to be at the exact same speed as on regular sites. I haven't tried in Google Chrome, Safari nor Internet Explorer, though, but if you use IE, it isn't a supported browser for our site (if you checked the copyright since 2008, you will notice it was never listed in our "best viewed in" list) because it's impossible to keep a site IE compatible when you want it to not fail both W3C validators

Hmmm i think it must have been Firefox interacting weirdly with 7 because Eeems had almost the same Setup as me and he had not problem, but he was running Vista.  I'm in Chrome now so its all good ^^

yeah it might be that x.x, I haven't used Firefox much in 7 myself, and even if I did, it would be hard to detect any slowdowns on a 8-core processor :P
