Title: DJ Omnimaga releases album for sale: Tales of the Knight of the Moon
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on December 15, 2011, 12:13:05 am
In June 2002, I started producing electronic dance music, which ranged between eurodance and happy hardcore in style. I continued producing such music in 2003 and Early 2004, then from late 2006 to late 2009. In the process I released several albums, all available for free as individual songs on the two websites I used to run myself (although it requires an account). Those albums, excluding any DJ mix I did, were Omnidance 1 and 2 from 2003, Epic Journey Through the Galaxy, Journey Through The Moon Dark Side, Enter the Dream World and Angel in the Stars from 2007 and finally It's the End of Time and Destiny Knight from 2008.

However, after making other songs afterward, I decided to switch to another style in May 2010: Electronic Power Metal. I switched because I was inspired by video game music from Japan, along with some metal remixes and covers of that music, and power metal gave me more inspiration to make melodies than club and rave music did.

The following is my first ever album of that style: Tales of the Knight of the Moon (TotKotM) (http://djomnimaga.bandcamp.com/album/tales-of-the-knight-of-the-moon). This is also the first ever music album that I am putting for sale, the 8 previous ones having always been available for free, along with the rest of my 128K songs. The final price will be $4.99 for the entire album and $0.79 per song. You can click on the album pic or the song names in the second image to go to them:

It is greatly inspired from artists and bands such as Saitama Saisyu Heiki, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Dragonforce, Gamma Ray and many others. However, it is not exactly true power metal like those artists, because the entire album was created using a music sequencer rather than played with real guitar, keyboards and drums, in the same way most dance and rave music is created. Also there are no lyrics, so while listening to the album, you might feel like if this music came from some random japanese RPG or something.

As for the songs on the album, here is the story behind some of them:

-Tales of the Knight of the Moon:
This is obviously the song after which the album is titled and the first song on the album. Recorded in 2011, this song is an electronic power metal re-arrange of my experimental dance-rock song called Moon Knight, which was released in 2003 and is available here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOQAlLJ7bBI). You will recognize the chorus and solo.

-The Lunar Warrior:
Based greatly on my song La Porte du Soleil (see below), and the intro seems to remind people of Dragonforce.

-Metal of Time
I had this idea over half a year before starting to make the song and the goal was to use inspiration from Ys music, but make the song sound like it was recorded in the early '90s.

-The Game That We Lost
Inspired from Sonata Arctica faster songs a lot, the title of this tune is in reference to an old internet meme.

-Ride Through the 4th Dimension
Remix of my 2008 song called Frozen Danger, which was going to be used in a now-defunct RPG Maker project called Superstar Hero. The song has some '80s feel into it, although the remake has guitar sounds and is of course longer.

-La Porte du Soleil
This song is special in some ways: I got the idea in my head back in Late 2000, when I was drawing a comic-based dice-pen RPG of the same name as the song. I imagined what could be the theme song if that D&D-style game comic ever made it into a video game format. However, back then I did not have any software to compose music, and with the years I forgot about the song. In 2011, I started having memories of the idea again, after checking back my old comic books again, and eventually decided to make the song. The difference, however, is that now it's kinda like power metal rather than my original '80s style idea. However, the entire melody until the keyboard solo starts has been in my head for a decade. If you watch the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0900Fni4ng), it goes through various images from the original 2000-01 comic I made.

-Xaminaga
Speed metal cover of my early 2007 happy hardcore song called Journey Through the Moon Dark Side (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXkuVA7Z28E). The song is named after the final boss in The Reign of Legends 3, RPG released in 2004 for the TI-84 Plus calculators.

-The Land of Hopelessness
The longest song on the album, inspired from some late '90s Gamma Ray and Stratovarius stuff. This song holds the distinction of being my first post-2004 song to have been showcased to someone in real life prior being showcased online.

-Quest For the Legendary Axe
The unnoficial Axe Parser's theme song. This is the only song on the album that was recorded in 2010 instead of 2011. Inspiration was gotten from Nightwish and Stratovarius, but the sound ended up being more towards Gamma Ray's heavy metal style, at times.

-The Warrior Says Goodbye
This song was made right after I lost a great friendship (although it has been fixed ever since) and was going to be my last song. However it finally became the last song of not necessarily my last album. It's greatly inspired from some Gamma Ray and Stratovarius stuff from the late '90s.

-Merry Metal Time (Bonus track only available from December 15th to 31st 2011)
This limited edition song is a Christmas rendition of Metal of Time (see above). It will be included as extra track on TotKotM until New Year 2012.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy. You can either buy the HQ WAV/MP3/FLAC version of the album or listen to it on Bandcamp (http://djomnimaga.bandcamp.com/album/tales-of-the-knight-of-the-moon)!
(http://dj.omnimaga.org/totkotmadsm.png) (http://djomnimaga.bandcamp.com/album/tales-of-the-knight-of-the-moon)

In the future, I might release albums of my old stuff for the same $4.99 price, but unfortunately I do not have 320K/WAV versions of all my old stuff, so there would be no sound quality advantage to gain from buying the albums, other than just a simple donation. Also I have no plan to remove my older songs from Omnimaga and TIMGUL if I sell them, unlike TotKotM songs.

I already listened to it over 9000 times, it's really a should buy album, it's worth your $4.99. :D

This song holds the distinction of being my first post-2004 song to have been showcased to someone in real life prior being showcased online.

I'd buy it...but I don't have any money, and I'm trying to save for my music lol....Actually, from one musician to another, I think I can find a few bucks to buy an album, You know...support the cause ( not to mention that I really do love listening to your music! )

Actually I think one factor that might come into play is the fact that several of my music fans were fans of my techno/trance/hardcore stuff, and this new album is totally a different music genre. Not only I'm not well known outside Omnimaga, but the Omnimaga audience for this new album is much smaller than any of my previous releases.

On the other hand, I noticed some of my new songs got Youtube views at a faster rate than some of my late dance stuff. Eg: Hold On, Chaos Inside Me, Dancing Legend 2007, A New World to Discover 2008, TIMGUL, SOS Hardcore and Escape From Life and a few others are all songs I uploaded 2 years ago and they only got around 100-500 views, yet The Game That We Lost, La Porte Du Soleil, The Warrior Says Goodbye and Quest for the Legendary Axe, which were uploaded much later, all got more than those.

hmmm...You should just experiment around with genres, see what fans think, then act accordingly. The music business is a real tough road to walk lol. My dads a professional musician and my mom is a booking manager....

Well... if I only relied on genre popularity, according to my Youtube views, I would only make songs like 1000 BPM to rule them all and Nightmare in the Rave, now O.O
Title: Re: DJ Omnimaga releases album for sale: Tales of the Knight of the Moon

then again genre popularity is VERY inconsistent....that's why most musicians choose to change styles along with demand, or the suffer inconsistent income..... But at the core of it all, a good musician always remembers that it isn't about the money made but the pleasure made in the music. Music is magic.....not to be cliche lol

Yeah sadly the music industry works that way. For example notice how many sales Justin Bieber gets, simply because it's mainstream pop/dance music. I would hate to be forced to change my style to something I dislike creating, though. In the past I tried doing stuff closer to existing dance genres and it never worked well or I didn't like the end result.

Yeah man, stick with what you enjoy. Music is nothing if it's made just for money. Music should be made for the love of music (and it's respective genres), If you love techno, make techno music, if you love rock, make rock music. I guess the way you become successful is finding where the audience is that likes your genre, then showcasing it to them

I was finally able to listen to the entire album in one sitting, and I love it :D

I was gonna try reviewing each of the songs more in depth, so I took notes as I listened, but the only things I wrote for any of songs were "yes", "great", "VERY YES", and "YESSSSS"
The "VERY YES" comment was to Xaminaga for remixing one of my other favorite Omnimaga songs, and "YESSSSS" was at The Land of Hopelessness for... well, the entire thing, really

Heh, I purchased the album about half an hour before the new year hits my timezone in order to get the bonus track :P (I could theoretically have bought it later, but I wasn't sure that I would have time to do that.) I haven't listened to the downloaded versions of the songs yet, but I listened to them a few times on Bandcamp and they were pretty good!

Oh don't worry josJuice. I must manually remove the track, as there's no pre-set timeframe for availability of tracks. You can even set the release date in the future. So the track could be available until 12:07 AM or so :P

Also glad you liked the songs. :D Hopefully I get inspiration to do more soon (I might also post HQ versions of some of my old stuff there too in the future along with zip files of my other stuff attached to it)

Great melodies, I love that ! It reminds me a bit of Genesis, wich is one of my favorite bands (or maybe just the title reminds me of their song "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight").

really? I thought they had a totally different music style? O.O Or do you just mean the title?

Actually the title of the first song is in reference to my song Moon Knight from 2003.  I considered actually making a track called Tales of the Star Knight too at one point, by the way, since there was also a song called Star Knight :D

I'm wondering about the quality of the different file types. The option of Flac sounds very appealing, but I'm wondering how it is converted. Is it directly from the MTVMG program?

I do not know, but I heard it's almost like WAV but with very good compression. I got told it was better than 320k MP3 at least. The downside with FLAC, though, is that very few players support that format, so you usually need to download VLC Media Player or something like that.

And yes those songs are recorded directly from MTVMG and saved in WAV. They got uploaded to Bandcamp, who are offering songs in various formats.

FLAC has lossless compression, so it have the same quality as the original WAVs. (That's why Bandcamp requires your songs to be uploaded in WAV, BTW. They want the best quality so they can offer songs in FLAC, in case users thinking MP3 320 isn't enough buys your album.)

But again, certain people think not providing a CD and a CD pocket isn't enough to buy the album :P

Which I think isn't right, because providing CDs is a major PITA for the seller if he starts becoming popular and if he decides to have a company do it for him, they always extort so much money from you that you basically lose money and you have no guarantees they'll not scam you. If they do it for free, then they take like $10-15 off your sale, so you have to charge like $20-25 for the album without shipping fees included. >.< Plus I myself don't like the 3-4 weeks shipping time between  Canada and United States or vice-versa.

As for FLAC, I'M glad they include it since a lot of music stores I saw only provides 128K or 192K MP3s so the quality suffers a lot. The only time you won't see a difference in quality for music I sell is when I decide to sell my older stuff, since I no longer have WAV files for most of the songs.

WARNING: For those who cannot use Bandcamp to purchase this album, I am letting you know that the iTunes/Spotify/Zune/Rhapsody/etc version of this album will be terminated very soon. Takedown requests were issued to Reverbnation for Ancient Kingdom of Omnimaga, Tales of the Knight of the Moon and A Decade of Omnidance, so in a few months or weeks they'll be gone from retailers (except Bandcamp of course). If you planned to purchase this album, then you should do it as soon as possible because it is unknown when and if it will be back on iTunes afterward. A Decade of Magic Hardcore will remain for the time being, as it's the only profitable album in the list.
