Title: Donations
Post by: Juju on July 11, 2011, 09:42:38 pm
You may have noticed a new donate button below the miscellaneous box on the main page. Effectively, you can now donate to Omnimaga!

You know, hosting Omnimaga, its sister site TIMGUL and OmnomIRC isn't free. It costs up to $1000 a year, our founder DJ_O used to pay as much as $600 himself, including Omnimaga and TIMGUL's hosting and the contest prizes (the last $400 being for hosting OmnomIRC on Netham45's VPS), but this year, we have to rely on the community, since DJ left (http://ourl.ca/11981). So feel free to donate some money :) We already found members willing to pay rather huge donations already, so the future of Omnimaga is already safe for now, but we would like to leave everyone the chance to contribute, so we could use the extra money on bigger contest prizes and other miscellaneous goodies such as upgrading the hosting package if we need to.

I would also want to remind you that you have a little more than 3 days left to submit your program to the Axe programming contest (http://ourl.ca/11030). I recommend you to take your time not to rush your release nor to wait at the last minute to send it.

I'm still waiting on my PayPal balance to update, and you know where it's going.

I think our goal for 2011 is about $1000, I told about it in the first post. The hosting alone is about $340, due for Oct. 18.

Why does Omnimaga cost so much?
I mean, it doesn't cost me any money to host my website from my computer (except internet bills).
Could you tell us each thing that costs money and how much?

Can money be sent by mail?
My parents would say no to anything over a dollar.

We have a shitload more traffic than your home computer.  We pay for nice hosting.

Well, I think your upload speed is probably too poor to handle a big website such as Omnimaga.

And, by mail, I don't know, that would be possible. You may want to PM me about that.

I understand that :P

I am just ignorant about how these things are charged.  Like would getting rid of the Spam section save money?  Or should we download some more ram (old joke)

I may pm you Juju when i get the time, but I make no decisions at night and I am extremely busy next week.

I am willing on clicking over 9000 google ads for money :P

Well, let's put it this way.  I'll be donating $100 as soon as PayPal gets its head out of it's ass.  If there are a few others who do similar amounts, and a bunch with small amounts, we'll make the goals.

If I had any money I'd donate. My parents don't even know I'm on this site and they control all of my finances. They disprove greatly of discussions on the internet

I hope you guys get the money for this. I will do anything I can that would help keep omni alive

Sorry i could not give more, since i'm actually unemployed.

Anyway, hope my (small) contribution will help omnimaga to survive...

Just to give a little brief on the scenario:

z80man has already pledged $150
SirCmpwn has pledged an amount I don't know distributed over a period of time
I have pledged an undisclosed amount approximately equivalent to z80man's donation.
the_mad_joob has pledged $30.

The reason Omni is so expensive to host is because we use a lot of disk space to hold all of the downloads/attachments and because we need a lot of bandwidth (60 GB a month on average, if I remember correctly. 90 GB during nDoom). On top of a reliable host, that's expensive.

Right now, I'm 14 and poor :( If I get a summer job (my parents want to keep me off the computer :P) I'll try to donate some money.

I'll get PayPal in October, then I'll see if I can give anything.

I'll see if I can pledge something.

At another forum I used to frequent, they had an interesting system: If you donate, you get a cool looking "Patron" banner next to your username (a different one depending on the amount donated).  Also, at the next level, you get a domain email address.  In this case, something like "[email protected]".  At the levels after that, you get a sub-domain with some space and bandwidth also dependent on the amount.  So "www.yourname.omnimaga.org".  I think there were 4 levels ranging from 5 to 60 dollars and then you would renew it each year.

I wonder if a similar system could encourage more people to donate.  I know a lot of people here are younger and live with their parents and might not have a lot but if they tell their parents they are buying a sub domain to host their own website, it would be much more likely that they get money for that.  It wouldn't cost omni that much either, certainly far less than the pledge rate, because sites like that generally have very low bandwidth.

Just a suggestion  ;D

Nice to hear about donations. But I am poor and don't have a paypal account or something like that.

I think a subdomain would be nice for donors.

Hrm...we could do a simple subdomain pointing to whatever ip you want. Hosting people's stuff though would make it harder. Although we might be able to do it. I'd have to talk to the other admins about it and see what they think.

Subdomains are nice, but if it would just point to an IP, maybe an email would be better. I just got paid today so I may be able to spare like $5-$10.

also, the button doesn't really fit well with the omnimaga theme.  So I made a button that fit omnimaga theme more. ;) If you do use it, its probably good to mention its via paypal.

I think it looks pretty good, plus it is recognizable as a PayPal button, which gives users more peace of mind that they aren't about to empty their bank account into a scam.

Well I'm thinking pointing to a domain ( or redirecting to another url ) would be only if we don't want to also have to host a bunch of other people. If we are ok with that though then we would give some space as well.

Or we could just let the user choose.  I bet some people don't want to make a whole new site.  Or we could provide them a subdomain on ca.lc if it is actually bought.  :P

Well, a domain would be a good idea, and for the space, I have some on my VPS.

I agree with Sir.  I'd rather stick with the default Paypal image.

$600 is pretty damn steep for shared hosting, even for two sites. You could get 2 decent VPS's for that and Omnimaga sure as heck doesn't need a vps.

As for OmnomIRC, it doesn't NEED to be hosted on a vps, at least I see no reason why it should be more complex than the average IRC bot which any shell account could handle so asking for members to donate towards Nethams VPS is kinda off IMO.

If you really need $1000 for hosting I'd like to see it explained as to where that is going because no shared host should cost that much for a year, and there is nothing stopping you from hosting both those sites on one shared account, most places do allow mulitple domains and more than one mysql db. Heck I could throw one of them on my shared hosting which I pay $144 for 4yrs with.

Heck I'd donate towards hosting or even pay for it myself, but I highly doubt that you are paying that much for your hosting, and if you are you are getting scammed or paying for services you don't need.

AspirePlus2
and I don't know about the 1and1 account I'd have to do some looking into it but I don't have the info atm.
I agree though it is pretty steep. I'm wondering if we should look around and see if we can get another better deal ( although make sure to do a good background check on the hosting and make sure they have been around a long time ).

0.o that is friggin expensive to the point where I'd say you are getting ripped off to the extreme. I get way more than that and I pay a whole lot less. I don't know why you guys moved from 1and1 but surpass has served me and Kerm very well over the years and is hella cheaper. But if you are gonna ask for donations you had better be trying to get by without as best as possible first and it sure doesn't look like that.

And I still feel like asking people to pay for Nethams VPS is wrong, and IRC bot should not need a VPS and if he wants members to pay he should be looking for the cheapest way possible to host it, not be getting massive overkill.

We are actually discussing things right now about this. We might be able to cut it by a lot.
We will announce when we figure it out.

Also, I think you can make like Linux Mint and make a topic with who donated and how much and the total.

Check linuxmint.com to see how they do it.

Seems like now the site works pretty well on Netham45 server. It loads slightly slower than on Aspiration (especially the board stats page) and sometimes OmnomIRC lags more, but it's still much faster than it was on 1and1 and that's with more visitors.

Seems like the bugs were fixed to, so I guess the move will be official soon? Also what will happen to TIMGUL?
