Title: Earliest TI-Nspire prototype discovery
Post by: critor on January 16, 2012, 07:42:24 pm
2 weeks ago (http://ourl.ca/14704/275373), we revealed you the existence of what was then the oldest TI-Nspire prototype: the TI-Phoenix 1 P1-EVT1 from january 2006.

The previous sentence is not exact anymore, as we've discovered an even older prototype, one of the greatest discoveries in my life if not the greatest.

Did you know that before the handhelds are available, TI engineers are working on development boards?
We had allready revealed you a Nspire ClickPad developement board from october-december 2006 in a previous news (http://ourl.ca/11758/222008):

This development board was coming after the TI-Nspire CAS+ handhelds (september 2006) and before the TI-Nspire ClickPad handhelds prototypes (february 2007).

So today, thanks to Adriweb, we have photos from the TI-Phoenix 1 development board!!! :o

(http://tiplanet.org/forum/gallery/image.php?mode=medium&album_id=49&image_id=397) (http://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8673)

And of course, it comes before the TI-Phoenix 1 handheld. There are 2005 datestamps on the board! ;D(http://www.omnimaga.org/Themes/default/images/gpbp_arrow_up.gif)
So you've just under your eyes the new oldest TI-Nspire prototype in the world!

An empty Nspire case with a CAS+ keypad is attached to the board:

So this is the earlier thing than the Phoenix you mentioned once? Oh nice. So it doesn't even have a screen? Lol.

Holy bejeezers even the 84+ was pretty new then... If TI starts working on amazing things that early, I wonder what they are working on now... TOUCHSCREEN? :O

I wouldn't be surprised if the TI-Nspire development didn't start before the TI-84+ and 89 Titanium came out O.O

Maybe people complained at the lack of innovation from TI and they were actually reading ticalc.org comments back then, so they immediately started working on the Nspire series.

They did a few years ago, to compete against the Casio ClassPad and I believe an HP touchscreen calc project, but then TI cancelled it.

yes :)

Oh nice. So it doesn't even have a screen? Lol.

There is an LCD block, and a related connector.
It's just that the LCD panel is not attached.
But it was on the other development board in a corner - you can check above.

I assume the LCD panel goes here in the top left-hand corner too - there is a blank space.

Zoomed photos for you! :D

Let's discover other parts of the TI-Phoenix 1 development board.

Here is the USB block:
(http://tiplanet.org/forum/gallery/image.php?album_id=49&image_id=402&view=no_count) (http://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8673)

On the top-left you've got the previously mentionned LCD connector.

On the top-right,you've got the power block.

An external power connector and a mini-USB plus are in the bottom-right.

I've uploaded some more zoomed in photos of other TI-Phoenix 1 development board parts.

Check them in the TI-Planet gallery:

We are now finished with the right side of the board.
Try assembling this big puzzle ;)

The external Nspire case coming with the TI-Phoenix 1 development board is allmost entirely empty: it only includes the keypad which seems to be linked to the main board with an old IDE cable.
