Title: Geocities dying next month: TI calculator documentation backup time?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on September 12, 2009, 12:14:23 am
This is not really directly calc-related news, but as Geocities long lasting free web hosting will no longer exist next month, many old piece of history TI websites such as The Richfiles (http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/5081/Richfiles.html) will also stop existing. For those who got websites there or know important documents they want to keep that are located on someone's website hosted there, I suggest you save a backup copy before it goes away. Although many TI Geocities websites are simple personal web pages and are generally not state-in-the-art web designs, sometimes, there might be stuff that is not available anywhere else, even ticalc.org, that will disappear for good soon.

In 2006, something similar happened to the Casio calculator community: Earthforge, specialized in Casio calc free website hosting, shut down for good, taking away half of the Casio programming history with it.

On another note, the IRC channel has equaled its September 15th 2006 record of 28 online users at once. The only difference is that this time there were 4 bots, while the last time there were 5. There have also been an increase in overall activity there since the move back to Efnet.

I've heard that archiveteam.org was doing some kind of project to save an entire copy of Geocities. Sites going down and taking history with them is a big deal to that group.

That would be cool. Altough Geocities has so many crappy sites, some stuff might actually be useful.
