While TI hinders the community with anti-downgrade/ASM/C protections on your TI-Nspire, Sony does the same about 3rd party development on the Playstation 3. Well, thanks to BrandonW, it looks like our dear calcs may come to help for PS3 users! In #ti IRC channel, there have been a lot of discussion about his latest project for the last few days. Some discussion was leaked in #omnimaga, #cemetech and #tcpa as well.
Who said calculators were just for math? Certainly not BrandonW, who has been working non stop, breaking his all-nighters streak record, on this PS3 jailbreaking exploit, mentionned on Slashdot (http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/09/06/202201/Sony-Has-Lost-the-PS3-Hacking-War) today.
Here is a video of it in action, by BrandonW himself:
Now to see if PS3 owners will eventually be able to use their console to jailbreak a TI-Nspire...
UPDATE: It has been released! http://brandonw.net/ps3jb/
-
that's crazy...i first saw the thread title and assumed it was a joke...
good job brandonw!
-
Beautiful!
Nice to see calculators reaching their maximum potential!
-
Uh.....wow? Nice job, BrandonW!
-
... holy!
I need ps3 now.
(someone needs to make a ti-84 emulator for wii homebrew)
-
This is awesome! great job BrandonW!
-
that's crazy...i first saw the thread title and assumed it was a joke...
Nope, anything with the BrandonW label on it cannot be a joke :P
And yes, good job! Let's hope Sony won't block this too fast.
-
Increíble! Awesome job! ;D ;D ;D
-
This is madness!
-
This is madness!
THIS... IS... BRANDONW!!!!
-
Kickass, can't wait to use it!
-
same here, if I ever buy a PS3
/me can,t wait for a $199 model
-
This is madness!
THIS... IS... BRANDONW!!!!
Congrats BrandonW! :D
And this ^ :P
-
Released! Updated news with download link.
-
Great work BrandonW!
By the way, who came up with the idea to jailbreak a PS3 with a calculator? I mean am I the only one thinking "Random much?" :P
-
I think BrandonW's orange 84+ SE is the most famous calculator out there...
Its pic was in a ton of the articles about the signing keys, and now it is featured here. :)
-
I have no clue. One day, BrandonW brought up the idea on #omnimaga, but I don't know when the talk started in #ti and #tcpa. I think some happened on a PS3 channel and lots of people seemed amazed.
Now imagine if this makes more people buy calcs and those people eventually get interested in calc dev, too.
-
Ah ok. Well if anyone was able to do it I'm not surprised it was BrandonW.
@BrandonW
Couple things. One, you're an amazing guy, programmer, and inspiration :D Two, you have one hell of entertainment center :P
-
;D
This is amazing!
-
We need to have more stuff like this. The more hardware we can connect the calc to, the more users, possible developers, and more publicity will follow. Everyone knows that you can play games on calcs nowadays, we should show them that they can also operate toasters or do whatever.
-
Lol about the toaster thing :P
I am amazed more and more about what calcs can do. Not only we can play Star Fox, but now we can jailbreak 9000x more poweful hardware with those calcs.
And 20 years ago we would have thought calcs are just for math :P.
-
Well if anyone can work a toaster with a calculator I'm sure BrandonW will be the first to succeed :P
-
With some more complex toaster kinds, maybe he could do Wacky Fun Random Numbar Generator v1.0000069 Toaster Edition
-
I have no clue. One day, BrandonW brought up the idea on #omnimaga, but I don't know when the talk started in #ti and #tcpa. I think some happened on a PS3 channel and lots of people seemed amazed.
I suggested it to him about a week ago over a PM.
BrandonW, the hack works great! :D
-
quick question: couldn't the ps3 be jailbroken already for $13?
-
we need fitting background music ;O
-
[ Invalid YouTube link ]
we need fitting background music ;O
¯\(°_o)/¯
That makes me want to dig up the quotes topic
-
Well, this is free happybobjr!
This made me laugh so hard. AWESOME!
I wish I had a PS3, but I kinda need a HDTV or it's not really as awesome. The PS2 still has amazing graphics for SD TVs.
-
Actually nope it isn't free. You need to buy the calc ;D
-
:O this is awsome, hope fully we can som jailbreak our iphones using a TI-84+ XD
-
Who knows? In the future, we may feel the desire to jailbreak our toasters. Or lobster cookers.
-
The later will be even more awesome than the PS3 jailbreaking
-
yeah, nothing like using third party lobsters on my I-lobstertoaster
-
I hope you mean I-lobstertoaster for real, not iLobsterToaster. Don't tell me Apple is invading the toaster market :(
-
I meant iLobsterToaster :P
I hear they dont want you too use third party blue lobster, we shall find a fix for that soon >:D
-
shit no :(
-
oh did the video not work? Its Celine Dion "My Heart will go on"
-
Lol tatsu :P
-
No... not for me anyway, the video showed fine.
Some of my friends at school were making jokes about this today like "4 years... the PS3 was unhackable... and now it has been bitch slapped by a calculator..."
EDIT: btw, has anybody been able to install any homebrew? I havn't gotten any(only two available atm) working and was just curious :<
EDIT2: Ok, guess it's just the backup managers, got the ps3-ftp-server pkg to install.
-
Lol it's amazing the attention the calcs will get with that XD
-
Well, this is free happybobjr!
If you have a ti-84 calculator.
lol. I told a couple of ps3 owners today at school. one offered me $10 to do this for him. I politely refused.
-
Lol. IMHO I would be careful to not answer too many ppl favor, cuz then everyone will ask you the same request x.x
-
Huh, ten bucks to do a simple thing? I would've done it :P (At least I'm assuming it is pretty simple to do.) Then, more people just means more money :P
-
Lol. IMHO I would be careful to not answer too many ppl favor, cuz then everyone will ask you the same request x.x
Exactly why didn't do it.
i get sick of random requests that if i don't agree to, they either hate me and call me a fag, or won't leave me alone until i help.
(besides, i don't want the police dogs to come in randomly one day and have them start barking at my wallet, if you catch my drift.)

this kid does drugs allot.

X.x I am confused at what the sentence in parenthesis means x.x
But yeah usually, when you help people, afterward they ask more and more. Same when you give them 1 inch, they take 10. Basically they abuse. When you said yes for too long, afterward when you say no once, you're screwed. It's the same thing at a job.
-
But that's the good thing about the one being able to do it. You control what you give and what they take. If you wanna say no, say no. If they want more and you don't wanna do it, don't. If they have a problem with it tell them to do it themselves or take what you give :P (May piss them off but who really cares, you're the one in the power position.) Just saying though, I'm not saying what you did was wrong or something.
As for the sentence in parenthesis I believe he is talking about how he could possibly get in trouble for doing it, and then getting paid to do it too. If I'm mistaken please correct me, happybobjr.
-
One issue is that it can be hard for someone to say no. In my case it's hard to say no, because I always fear bad consequences or something. Knowing how bosses work, I know when to start saying no, though, and about laws, so if I get asked something I say yes but if I see they start abusing then I tell them indirectly and politely to use some common sense or do some face that makes it look like I am not too happy and they are starting to know me and a few others about when we start to feel there is abuse and they usually stop. It may help that I worked there for a while, though. Now if only all places were like that x.x
EDIT: Back on topic: I wonder if this will be featured on ticalc?
-
i have been wondering that. I expected it to go up yesterday to tell you the truth.
* although it doesn't beat the wacky number generator
-
That said, I wonder if the exploit is stable yet. Maybe ticalc is waiting until it is more stable to pick it up.
I personally did not post a news at first for similar reasons, but then Slashdot picked it and it started to spread.

Ya, I know. That's why I said it's still ok to say no :) I know it can be hard.
But ya, I really wouldn't be surprised if it was featured though. It should be.

Thanks for the kind words, everybody.
Crossing communities for a little bit was an amazing experience. Over the course of this thing, I gained 2,000 Twitter followers, 130,000 views on the YouTube video (and still climbing), and a lot of support from a lot of people. There's always the few haters that don't really understand what's going on, but that's to be expected with anything I suppose. I definitely have a lot of respect for the people who have to deal with these huge and impatient communities on a daily basis. Putting up with it for a week was a challenge to say the least.
The port itself was pretty crazy, too. It took a week non-stop (ever since the open source implementation of the exploit was released) of very little sleep and an expensive USB hardware analyzer I had FedEx overnighted here (by the way, that analyzer's going to help out with usb8x updates and more and more USB drivers -- we're talking wifi, webcams, you name it -- stuff I could never figure out before and simply had to give up on can now be resurrected).
Anyway, just wanted to congratulate you on being the first calculator site to pick this up (I think...at least ticalc.org wasn't first) and for the kind words.
And Netham45 for giving me the idea.
-
hmm, now why #cemetech got a flood of spammers from #ps3dev? oh well
thanks Brandon for making so much awesome stuff with usb8x
-
Yeah I saw on Youtube, it was shocking, considering it's a calculator video. The only other calc vid that ever got 100000 views was Digitan000's calc tribute vid and it took over a year or two to get there.
It's really an amazing thing you did here (once again) and I wish everyone would understand the work put in those things. I understand about the haters and impatient people. When TI-Boy SE got postponed, lots of people came here begging non-stop for updates and one seemed to be annoyed at us because of it (well, it was not as bad but I saw similar things happen in other non-calc communities before and it's insane x.x).
Good luck in your future projects!
Also what do you mean by flood of spammers Qazz42?
-
eh, alberthro did something and right after people from ps3dev would do something like
aoiuefhwaiuofh has entered
dfafka:raekghbabgrkajrgf
akgfaerkwjbgfrgekbr'
aiorhaiugrasiugf has quit
-
alberthro frickin' said the forum names on #ps3dev. :\
I told him not to. >:|
-
Mr KermM allowed it... :P
Anyways, congrats BrandonW! :D Hopefully with your newfound experience, you could make an iPod Touch JB too.... ;)
-
I am getting mad that alot of people are downloading the video then uploading it on youtube and taking all the credit
-
me too
about 5 other guys have it
those theifts
-
Yeah I noticed it is mirrored like crazy. Sadly it seems like a common thing on Youtube nowadays, though. Even some of my vids got mirrored :/. It sucks. At least if they said BrandonW in the credits it would be tolerable.
Also ticalc.org posted a news article about the jailbreak now :)
As for the Cemetech spam, I noticed some weird users joined one day and one arrived in #omnimaga once but it seemed less bad. It seems like that PS3 chan is filled with immature kids or trolls x.x. From what I read in #ti logs, I think BrandonW even got tired of some people there and left #ps3dev for a bit x.x. Also it's insane how many times some questions are answered on his vid x.x
-
some of the mirrors have links to website that have you download viruses.
I checked one... (i used sandboxie and it saved my life :D)
-
Ugh, I wonder if those vids can be flagged... some people probably do it just to cause trouble to users who really want to jailbreak their PS3. It happens a lot with warez and vids to crack softwares or get free Microsoft/Wii points
-
Great, Brandon!
(as usual ;)
-
I wish youtube would spend more time hunting down videos stolen from other uers than trying to delete videos which have copyrighted music....
-
Assuming you mean *than, Same here, although sadly it is not Youtube fault entirely, but rather some greedy music labels that threaten Youtube to delete them. I agree, though, that they should spend more time monitoring stolen vids... especially when they contain links to viruses.
-
D: I meant than! sry, going to fix that
I agree, I hate greedy coorperations
-
If we're being picky...corporations*
-
:P I tend to misspell when rushing
-
Thanks for the kind words, everybody.
...
And Netham45 for giving me the idea.
no problem, thank you for an awesome program that saved me waiting months for a teensy! :D
It all works excellently, by the way.
-
Lobsters can be useful sometimes ;D *runs*
That said I hope Sony won't immediately find a fix to prevent this kind of jailbreak from working on any PS3 future firmwares
-

They had a patch out blocking it a few days ago, on current FWs.
-
Who would apply a such patch on older/current firmware? (or is this just a fix for the future versions)?

Ouch, well I hope it will be possible to either downgrade or not be forced to install the new patch on current PS3s for those who wants to leave it jailbreaked. I guess they are really doing like TI now (and apple) :P
-
The update is required if you want to use the psn store or online play, I think that's about it.
-
Darn 200000 views on the vid. If people did not keep stealing the vid or mirroring it, it would certainly be 300000, though. I wonder how many downloads would the file get on ticalc.org if it was hosted there. It would most likely surpass Virtual TI in a year
-
BrandonW, wonderful job, as always. You never cease to astound me. :) Good luck on usb8x too. ;D
iLobsterToaster
lol! :P
BrandonW, can you please pull a string of overnighters to make Celtic III function as an automatic light dimmer. That's all I've ever wanted out of my calc. :P (somewhat jk)
-
Lol Ztrumpet, but he had several allnighters already D:
