Title: Major Restructuring Coming To Omnimaga
Post by: JustCause on July 08, 2012, 11:32:07 pm
Effective immediately, Omnimaga will be seeing some major changes. Some are being made on a trial basis and will be reverted or modified if they don't prove productive, while others have been pending for a while and are permanent.

1) The Spam section is now read-only until further notice. This change was made in order to combat the increasing number of nonproductive posts, and to promote on-topic and relevant discussion.

2) The unspoken bot rule is being enforced so non-approved bots are no longer allowed in legitimate discussion channels. They are welcome in #omnimaga-spam, as long as they don't crash OmnomIRC. Bot authors may petition for their bot to be approved by messaging a moderator.
The list of currently-approved bots is: New, Omnimaga, OmnomIRC, Axebot, Runer112, AtomASM, AxeBot, DoorsCS, LibBot, Lua2TNS2, TI-Bot-1, TI-Bot-3.

3) The Coders of Tomorrow group has been restored to its pre-nDoom status, with expanded moderation privelieges. A few inactive members have been removed from staff. alberthrocks has also been promoted to a Coder of Tomorrow position.

4) Anti-Riot Squad members have had their moderation privileges removed. Their power will be restored in case of a crisis situation, but stay as the ARS group.

5) 5 former ARS members have been given the temporary designation of "support staff." These members will moderate alongside the Coders of Tomorrow, similar to what was previously ARS. Support staff members are Art_of_camelot, Cooliojazz, Geekboy1011, Rcfreak0, and Hot_Dog.

6) lastly, and slightly less importantly, "Newser" has been renamed to "Editor" and "Manager" to "Admin".

We hope that these modifications will change Omnimaga for the better.

I must say that I think this is a great step towards bringing back original Omnimaga programs and projects. Best of luck!

Good move imho. I noticed lately that the spam section has been abused to the same extents as on the old board, decreasing quality:quantity ration a lot. Maybe limit posting there by only people whose post count including spam is at least 10 times their spam postcount automatically?

dj, the 10% is one thing we've been discussing. this is more an immediate action move until we figure out what else to do with it/how to go about it. thanks for the suggestion =)
Title: Re: Major Restructuring Coming To Omnimaga

Actually, I kinda disagree with the CoT move. There was a reason why we removed some privileges to them, in case we want to hire CoTs but we don't want to give them those extended privileges. If we want them to have privileges, we would just have to put them ARS as second group. That was my two cents. Other than that, those rules were already existing, but were apparently forgotten, so nice to see them enforced again.

Also rule of thumb if you want to get your bot approved: they have to be useful (like Runer's z80 bot) and they should only output stuff when we ask them to. (So no auto-answer to /me lost, that's pretty pointless. Sorry Derpy.) Exceptions should be notifications about forum posts or calc-related stuff (like New), if it's not spammy.

Ok. Yeah before I remember when the board reached more than 10% of the entire site content, it would close temporarily, but there was no way to do so automatically, so when staff got busier it sometimes reached 15% or so before being desactivated. What I thought that would be cool is if somebody could code an SMF mod that would check if the spam section is over 10% after somebody posts, then put it in read only mode automatically, then if after posting elsewhere it gets under 10, then enable it again. The other idea I had was the above, which applies to individual members rather than the entire board as a whole (so if you have like 1% spam, you could still post there, while someone else who has 20 couldn't. BUt again that could result in giant rush of spam when a newer member discovers the spam section after reaching like 780 posts or so)

As for CoT I think it is OK, but you guys will have to be careful when hiring new CoT members. Remember that one staff that tried to vandalize the site after getting into a fight with an admin. ??? Unless that change only applies to existing CoT? For the removal of ARS I guess it's OK since it was more when Omni had 400 posts/day. You could always re-add it if we get back to those activity levels.

Yeah, that's the idea. The ARS group still exists, but they're not mods until there's an influx of spam to deal with. Like a reserve.

Juju, that just means we'll have to make sure COT-to-bes are trustworthy moderators as well—basically whatever requirements there were for ARS.

Do the changes apply to existing staff, then?  For me some random buttons/checkboxes have disappeared, differing by board.

Anyway glad to hear about the anti-spam measures, it's been kind of out of hand lately x.x

Edit: made badges to match the changes :P
Not sure if Support Staff should be on one line or two, though.  It fits anyway.

Yes, you should be a full mod now.
For me some random buttons/checkboxes have disappeared, differing by board.
I fixed some stuff; please see if there are still issues and let us know if there are.

EDIT: Darn, shmibs already made a set of banners for the new membergroups, and they look almost identical to yours :/

Did he use the Narkisim font as well? (end of this post (http://ourl.ca/9293/176822))
(and mental note: gimp fails hard at small-size fonts, paint.net ftw for that)

Regarding the permissions I'll send a pm.

I wonder if an option could be that a member could only post in spam if it is below a certain percentage of his total posts. That way, it would force the overall board to have more quality posts. Though I'd think that would require a mod or something. :/
Title: Re: Major Restructuring Coming To Omnimaga

These are great changes I must say, especially about the ARS. I had been subtly nudging (XD) about the ARS situation back in March-April, where half of them were inactive yet received mod powers that active CoT did not have.
The spam situation is another good move, as even a few months ago there were a lot of spam posts, that some members would be posting more in spam topics than in other boards.

I also like the name changes. Makes the titles significantly clearer and standard too.

Perhaps the Support staff could just be named Moderators?

The original plan was the make the support staff all members of the existing "Rick Astley" usergroup :P

For some inexplicable reason, the name was vetoed...

Did you also happen to change the website font?
Title: Re: Major Restructuring Coming To Omnimaga
Post by: AngelFish on July 09, 2012, 09:38:13 am
Not as far as I was involved. Also, the fonts should be stored on your computer, not on the server itself. All we can do is really tell your client what font to use and I'm fairly sure we didn't change that...

Yea, that's true. That is what we are. :) As you said though, the title changes are overall much clearer now.

Did you guys merged the 2 hidden subforums together or you removed me access from one of them? Just wondering, this might or might not be a bug.
Title: Re: Major Restructuring Coming To Omnimaga
Post by: AngelFish on July 09, 2012, 10:28:54 am
Yeah, we did merge the two hidden subforums you can see together because CoTs took over the job of the ARS.

Thanks everyone! :) I hope to be a good CoT/moderator, though you'll see me more or less helping others and dabbling in my own affairs than much moderating/post slashing/etc. :P ("Ooh! New shiny buttons! What does this one do? *KABOOM*")

As for the changes, I guess we'll have to wait and find out. (I won't be a SirCmpwn, I promise! :3) So far, related to me or not, I like the changes. More productivity is always great! :D

EDIT: Also, if you have an IRC bot, you can always come to my channel, #thebot! :D We have lots of fun there! (And besides, you won't feel lonely being in #omnimaga-spam! :P)

Now that reminds me, you might want to do the same with the root board of our projects, major projects, non calc talk and misc or something, so new topics can't be created outside sub-forums

EDIT I can still post polls in spam lol

Runer112 is actually an artificial human created by the Data Overmind (情報統合思念体 Jōhō Tōgō Shinen-tai?, translated as Data Overmind in the novels, but as Data Integration Thought Entity in the anime), and possesses supernatural powers as a result. Therefore he's a bot.

Me gusta le reference ;)
Spoiler For If you don't get the reference...:
This comes from the anime, Haruhi Suzumiya. Basically, a weird girl makes everything weird. Weird people are attracted to her. (No, this isn't what it sounds.) Everything's a mystery! Very interesting and very odd at the same time. If you can stand the weirdness, it's definitely a good one to watch.

I'm pretty sure Juju's snipping from this one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuki_Nagato

EDIT: Oh, and the title of the anime... you guessed it... is her name! I think the actual title is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. That in itself deserves a WeirdFactor++... :P

Nah I think you go to admin->forum layout and settings and I believe it's in one of those sections near the bottom. You input the ID number of each group and separate them with commas. I don't recommend including small groups like No OmnomIRC/Banned, though, else it kinda looks weird D:

Title: Re: Major Restructuring Coming To Omnimaga
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 24, 2012, 10:44:35 pm
Well the Omnom group you were in is usually if someone got banned or requested for Omnom to be disabled entirely (for example if someone uses a 100 MHz computer and even toggling Omnom off still causes slow downs). If you were banned and you're not in the group anymore then I assume the ban ended.

EDIT: Sorry I took this whole thing out of context. This is what replying from a mobile phone does, replying from a post on the first page...

It definitely allows room to fit in a dedicated active mod/support staff level, as i personally thought a few months ago (and disscused with people such as DJ_O) that the ARS wasn't really living up to its name and position (half inactive and stuff).
I can't say about now as b4 I was really active on the forums (that came with a price I can no longer afford to pay in my last year of school) but activity and commitment I believe were a good indication of worthiness of a staff position (as well as respecting everyone too :) ).
But now with these changes, I feel like these positions are much more reliable in getting the job done. It is unfortunate however that I won't have much time to see what difference this makes. There's always next year! XD

I'll still post sporadically from time to time, but it'll be next year (or nov/dec this year) when I'll become more active again. That 400+ posts and 250 in March and April really cost me and was not sustainable as I had been aware all along. So restricting that now and wait until next year.

Anyway, got hopelessly off topic.
