Title: March 2010: Month of the records (and Ninjas)
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 19, 2010, 05:28:35 am
This month, maybe "Omnimaga: The Coders Of Tomorrow" should have been renamed "Omnimaga: The Land Of Ninjas".

Ninjas has effectively invaded our forums since March 2010 began, but in forum posting form rather than human form. Since the middle of fall, it has become more and more common, during active hours, to be Ninja'ed when posting on Omnimaga forums, which basically means posting a new reply to a topic only to find out that someone else has posted the same thing seconds earlier, and it has become even more common to see multiple replies to a message almost at the same time (commonly mis-referred to as cross-posting). Fortunately, SMF forum system has a features that warns our members that new replies were made to the topic they were replying to, if there are any, allowing them to edit their post accordingly, preventing potentially important messages from being missed and disrupting the flow of the conversation. In March 2010, however, new replies while posting has been legion to the point where at certain times of the day (usually during evening on week days) you may get notified about them twice during a single post.

After setting a new activity record for a February month with 2614 messages (the previous record was 2502, in 2006), we just have done the same in March. So far, 2893 posts were made this month, beating March 2006 record of 2703 with still 13 days to go. The highest activity on record on Omnimaga so far is April 2006, with 4045 messages, which was helped a lot by the high popularity of the Randomness sub-forum at the time, a section that had close to 20% of the entire old board activity.

Earlier in March, the new Omnimaga forums also witnessed its first day with over 200 posts, on March 5th, with a total of 241. 3 more days in the 200s were recorded afterward, specifically March 7th (232), 9th (228) and yesterday the 18th (250). While we are still far from our streak of five 200+ days in a row (Jan 7th through 11th 2006), this is still a huge increase over last month so far, especially that we only saw 3 days under 100 posts in march, as for tonight. Yesterday, we also received our highest amount of forum traffic, with 21162 hits only on the board pages, beating by far March 6th record of 11952. In fact, we do not know if it is because of the unusual traffic load, but last evening we even got hit by server errors, which fortunately went away with a few quick page reloads. After a traffic decrease in February, it seems like we are gonna know a major increase once again.

Many factors might explain the huge increase in activity in the past months, such as several of our members who stayed around or came back after Summer ended, add to that a lot of registrations in May and June last year. That, combined with the arrival of some very active members (and staff) in November, the friendly environment, the many active projects and major releases such as the GBC emulator for the recently jailbreaked TI-Nspire, most likely contributed a lot in attracting new members and keeping most regular arounds.

It also seems that our activity is still remaining concentrated toward calculator development too. While music showcase has become slightly more popular and that more people asks calculator help, 11276 messages out of our 25919, which is 43.5% of this entire SMF board, are located in calculator projects sections.

And both our staff and regular members are in for more releases too!

Sweet update DJ. I hadn't realized that we're in a month of ninja records. (I probably will get ninja'd while writing this).

Edit: Oh snap, no ninja. HA!

Interest in calcs is not finished and Omnnimaga Forum is demonstrating that.
Keep the releases rolling. ;)

and rickrolling

But... but... could this last one be the main cause of our activity increase??

I was surprised activity increased this much, though. My biggest surprise really was December. I expected November to be very active, because the years before, Nov was usually active. In 2007, Zera came out with Lost Legends series for example and a few other members like {AP} I think joined. Nov 08 also had higher activity than other months at the time, so based on 2009 fall activity I expected an increase. However, Christmas time is normally really dead around here, yet, we still had lot of people coming. When I saw Dec I guessed Jan would be quite active too. I was really surprised at the difference, though.

From experience, general TI forums generally goes through an activity slump for most of the Winter season, then things pick up again as spring progresses until the middle of the Summer, where activity drops until next school year is about to start. During Summer, some people normally leaves for vacation with no internet access and some even lose interest. When school is about to restart, new calc users comes to get games and ask questions. Some of these people stay around if they're interested in learning more, whenever they're not too busy with school.

However, I noticed that Omnimaga often tends to get most of its activity during Winter and lasts until Summer. The school restart rush is generally much shorter so activity generally remains low until November the year after.

This Winter, UTI forums has been slightly more active than the year before in Jan and Feb, I think, but for some reasons, activity dropped a lot in the past few days. TI|BD activity seems to be rather similar to what it was before. Cemetech got through a major spike in Jan and parts of February, but then it slowed down and they barely have any calc talk anymore. As for TI-Freakware, it somewhat came back to life, sort of, with AaroneusTheGreat return, and Revsoft is still active, altough all their projects are mostly progressing behind the scenes (I guess they want to keep some surprises or something)

Wow, I didn't realize we had 250 yesterday.  Wow. :)

I noticed the server errors last night and went "Oh boy, didn't DJ say something about the server crashing one time in a time of high activity..." ;D

Wow, this is a fantastic milestone, not to mention a great sign of the healthiness of the community ;D With so many new projects, and a  whole new area opening up with the nSpire hacked the community is booming!

Well I mentionned about the errors on IRC but they went away quickly. usually, I clicked, got 500 Internal server error, immediately refreshed the page, then it loaded fine. It was random. This happened before but not that much in a short amount of time. Occasionally you'll run into such error then it goes away.

When we were on Invisionfree, though, their servers couldn,t take as much activity and if post rate was like a new post every 6 seconds during about 3 minutes, forums started loading incredibly slowly then eventually would go down for a few minutes.

Keep in mind activity will most likely go down a lot soon, though, because of spring break (people going in family or vacation with lack of internet/computer access)

I don't think rickrolling is a record for this month. (nothing that can't be arranged, though, but it would be a little unpleasant to do)
Yay DJ Omnimaga has 6k posts!

The spring break hasn't arrived and I am affected in activity... But I will leave completely for 1 week or maybe 2. I have lots of activities (never had so much I think), exams, going out with friends, travels, etc..

Yeah I added a small update in the latest news about it. We also have more than Jan 2006 (4025) and Apr 2006 (4045), the two only times we've hit 4000 (that's unless the stats I got from archive.org are really off, though, but I don't recall ever hitting higher than 4000 more than twice and we never reached 5000). I think the only forums that ever hit 5000 are MaxCoderz in 2005 and Cemetech in 2006. Also yesterday was another 200+ post day. In fact it was 362! At least now we know our stats aren't 1 byte unsigned integers :P

I think our overall post count would be a lot bigger if we actually counted randomness section.
Nope, because it alerady counts toward the board total. Just not toward individual member's post counts. I think it's a good thing the Randomness section is invisible to guests and doesn't count posts, else it would probably be like half of the forums x.x. I saw this happen elsewhere and it sucks when no other sections gets any attention cuz everyone spam. On the old Omnimaga forums, the section was visible to guests and it was like 15% of the entire board total count x.x. Now it's not even 10% so that's good. Plus on the old board we had like 18% of projects talk, while now we got 43%.

Also, generally if the intro section gets too spammy, I disable individual post count there for a short while, so it discourage people from posting just to raise their post count.

It looks like we may hit 5000 this month. Three and half a day left and only 190 more posts are needed. However, spring/easter break might be A MAJOR issue. With trips, family and vacations, many people may have little to no internet access, so 5000 would be very easy to miss in such short amount of time. This is not to mention we went through a TI-Nspire craze, which is probably going to end with the fewer projects and Ndless updates. Notice how other forums seems to see their activity drop, too, compared to what they had a month ago.

Yeah I hope, it would suck if activity started to drop like it is on UTI or the like D:

I doubt we will get THAT inactive, though, because I have the UTI post stats since Omnimaga re-opened and for 2009 as a whole they did not even reach the five digits. Remember, though, that Ndless release plus the GBC emu attracted a lot of users who visits Omnimaga just for that, though. With the recent lack of Ndless 2.0 and TI-89 emu updates, a lot of those people probably started checking less and less. Also Axe saw no update for the entire week, which convinced many people to start working more on their projects. More work on projects == less posting. The later is good, though, if updates comes later ^^

Also, if you go in the stats, you will notice that we never had two months over 3000 in a row. December 2005, for example, was in the high 2000s, then Jan saw a huge jump in the 4Ks, then Feb saw a big activity slump early in the month, to see activity increase slightly at the end of the month. March in overall had the same activity, then April 2006, the month of the first forum shut down, saw a massive activity increase 2 weeks after the reopening, which lasted until early May, then Summertime kicked in with its new members, but others leaving for vacation.

Right now it's just March, so we may still have more activity for the next months. Usually, activity remains somewhat good as long as staff are working on projects.

There may also be another Summer programming contest so that might help us go through the summer easier.

Interesting that there is interest in calc projects we just need news of projects' progress to attract new users.
Anyway what attracted me most to calc dev was the possibility to do something epic.

March end is near. And how hard is going to beat the new record?
Title: Re: March 2010: Month of the records (and Ninjas)
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 30, 2010, 04:08:20 am
Breaking the record of 5000+ will most likely be hard. It could be possible if activity rises again after spring break ends, but otherwise, we may have to wait for next year, hoping we will be as active. Even if we don't break it, though, if we remain in the 2000s, it will be epic. Keep in mind that in 2006, we had a lot of drama and the Omnimaga community was much less stable in general than it is now, so just that is enough to have made activity drop. Maybe activity would have been much higher during Summer 2006 if it wasn't for the drama. I just hope staff continue posting about their projects and working on them. Projects is the key for attracting new users I think. Friendly environment also helps, and it also helps to renew our staff from time to time, not letting our team die either. I can understand that school and work can be quite hectic sometimes, though. I myself hate holidays and spring break for work x.x

What I also love with March record compared to Jan 06/Apr 06 records is how high the calc discussion vs offtopicness ratio is compared to 4 years ago. Also again this month, 700 posts were in the Axe subforum. Lol Quigibo I think your project now beats every staff project (and member's) in popularity, even TI-Boy SE :P

On a side note, if anyone hasn't figured out yet, we also managed to reach 10000 posts in only 3 months. During the entire year of 2009, we only managed to have 50% higher. I wouldn't be surprised if we hit 20000-25000 this year.

That's of course unless bad shit happened like a database server crash/1and1 going out of business, but since backups are done on a regular basis, we would simply be down for a few days like UTI last fall and lose a week or two of posts and a month of attachments at most (unless Netham45 still has his autobackup running, in which case we would only lose one day of posts). I also often backup the db directly in the Omni folder and some staff (and Netham45) have full FTP access (even TIMGUL)

Keep in mind that we have 57% of the entire english TI-83/84 community activity now, though. Out of the 17848 posts that were made on the forums since Jan 1st 2010, 10232 were made on Omnimaga. Cemetech has another large 25% chunk with close to 5000, if I remember, followed with United-TI's 8.5%

I really think UTI needs to put a new download system back up to put more visibility for the old files and convince people to continue releasing stuff there. Right now it seems to be going the way MaxCoderz did when they started phasing out their download section in 2006.

Today from 10:30 PM to 1 AM was very ninja-prone. By the time I would reply to a thread, even thought tonight I catched up faster (I didn't come on IRC immediately after returning from work. I did not check my e-mails immediately, nor Youtube comments, nor chatted with anyone, nor checked any other forums in the meantime). That was 112 posts in 2 1/2 hours. :O I don't think I recall a post rate this high so late at night (except Netham45/Tk493 post spree of New year 2007). To know 1.5 years ago, it sometimes took us an entire week to get 112.

Here's the log in question.
