Title: Massive Restructure to IRC
Post by: Eeems on March 16, 2011, 01:57:24 am
Due to recent incidents I have decided to do a massive restructure to IRC.
The channel is, for now going to be invite only as we get things set up. OmnomIRC will eventually be connected, but at the moment it will not.

We are no longer going to voice everybody in the channel, in fact the channel will be in private mode (or whatever it's called) continually, so no non-voiced members can chat. New joiners will have to request voice from ops and it will be at the ops discretion.
While we do want to help people, I think that this sort of instant communication where people can be hurt quite easily should be limited for those who we know wont hurt others. People who have proven themselves to be good will be given ident from netbot so they can autovoice.
The greet bot will now give a greet to all members who join with more information then just the link to the rules, but some more outlining some more specifics, and information on how to ident for those who can. Also who holds ops in the channel will be re-thought, more may be added, some may be taken away, no promises as of yet.

This restructure can be changed in the near future, but first all the admins need to have a discussion about it and until then the rules outlined above are to be followed.

There will be no complaints about this change especially since it is not final yet and the decision is final that there will be restructuring due to what has happened.

Thank you for your patience in this transition.

Thank you for the support.
Hopefully this will smooth out and become a better system.

Cool, it looks like this will takes care of the trolling :)

I'd like to help, but unfortunately I don't know enough about whatever language/system IRC runs on :P
Good luck on the restructuring.

So I'm confused about voicing and stuff.  Could you rephrase your plans on changing IRC if you can?

I hope this works.  :)

IRC is a powerful tool; it can both build and destroy.

Not to add further confusion, but does this invalidate DJ's previous news post?

This sounds fine. IRC should be for those who wish to have civil discussion. It needs to have rules and regulations just as the forums do. :)

@Hotdog:Voicing is simply the act of a channel operator giving a member joining the channel the ability to chat in the room. If they do not have "voice" status they cannot chat in the chat room.

Not completely. Currently the channel is still on invite only, so not everyone is going to get in. OmnomIRC is also not connected to the channel and will not be until the restructuring is done. So in a sense they are currently both shut down for public use. Just not forever.

only when a certain mode is set on the channel though. ( +m )

I guess in the future you could make the channel -m again, once things have calmed down. Maybe at the end of May, like in the Ultimatum news. However you would have to set it back +m at the end of July, since this is a rough period too.

Eeems is now in charge of the channel management, but please do not overload him with requests and tasks.

This is a sad time for omnimaga. but this new system i think will work well. 20 posts to talk in omnom obviously wasn't enough. and i think the individual invite is the best way to do it, rather than set an automatic barrier (eg: 200 posts, member for 5 months, post ratings).

I agree that the restructure is a good idea. Sometimes you just have to be really strict but, in the end, the strictness will produce a community of only those understanding individuals actually dedicated to furthering the community. In a way, it may seem restrictive or "limiting", but it seems that 99% of the internet is people we don't want so... *shrug*

I can understand the decision here. However, how does one get invited? Also since omnom is down you have to acces IRC through an external program like Pidgin...now how did I do that again...

If you want entry, you can perform a /knock #omnimaga.  However, knock spamming is prohibited and will result in retribution at the discretion of the ops in the channel.

On a side note, are we all joining #omnimag2 for a while now?

you can temporarily join #omnimaga2 if you wish
Can I be 'voiced'?
Yes. Just ask an operator to voice you.

I agree with the idea of this, but I believe the way that the proposed way is rather uninviting to new people.  I propose that instead of not voicing anybody without them being added explicitly by a op, that they should be voiced a set time after the greet bot has sent them a link to the rules.  Afterwards, any bad behavior can be monitored by those users who are there and if the behavior is unwelcomed they could vote that the user be devoiced with something like '!mute <user>'.  A bot would tally these votes and if a certain amount is reached then the user would be devoiced and would await a final ruling by those in charge of the channel, or someone higher up.  To me, it is a much better solution to the current problem and more welcoming than the aforementioned method proposed by Eeems.  What do the rest of you think?

but if some trollers vote for DJ_O for example, DJ_O will be devoiced. Maybe only the anti-riot squad members / members with >250 posts could do vote for members to be devoiced?

I like anti-riot squad and up to vote, but then again, if someone were devoiced for no apparent reason, it would obviously be a troll and we could just voice him again.

speaking of which, how exactly do we get in #omnimaga?

Well, the idea of having a community effort on the vote stems from the riod squad people, and others who actually have power in the channel are not always there to do this.  Of course, if someone was devoiced then he/she could just be revoiced and the 'trollers' could then be banned for abusing this system.

At the time I think that the channel is still unreachable, but when restrictions are dropped, you can access it by connecting to a EFnet server (http://www.efnet.org/?module=serversl) through either a online (http://www.mibbit.com/) or downloaded client such as mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/) or XChat (http://www.silverex.org/) and then joining the channel #omnimaga with the /join command.

I tried using /knock, but Pidgin didn't recognize that command. Is there another way to do it?

I meant now.  ;)  The logs show that Su-Chan is in there ATM, so I think you can get in, I just don't know if thats true.  :P

Not complaining or anything, But could there be a tiny irc that is seperate.  It would only do the post notifications, so people can't type in it.  That way we could use post notifier again?
(Haven't gotten a chance to use it in a while, I am just assuming it's not working.)

I'll take this voting idea into consideration. Thanks for the input Tribal.
Currently to get into the channel you need an invite from someone already there.

I'll not be able to for at least 40 minutes, but when I get home I will. Unless someone else does.

Can OmnomIRC come back? Maybe we can't type/talk in the channel but view #omnimaga, since eitherway people can read it in the logs.

Not sure if you agree, though.

Well, the problem is OmnomIRC is really only one login,  it just adds your name after its own. That would prevent being able to individually voice people, but the no talk solution would remove post notifications. You'd have to remove the chat bar from it, that should work.

Or was it a diff bot that did the post notifications?

I mean, nobody can talk, not even voiced people.

I want the spybot in the page of Omnimaga, hence I want OmnomIRC back, but without being able to talk.

He means what the other people have said, just use Omnom temporarily as a post notifier.  ;)

Personally I think the chan could work perfectly without restricting people, but not right now. First, the rules needs to be shortened and secondly there's still tension right now there. We need a break from the chan and focus more on the forums for a while.

To be fair I am personally a threat for the channel right now if it became public again. I cause too much damage there, and even though I apologise for my overeactions, I cannot promise anyone it won't happen again. This is why if I stayed in the community I am not excluding stopping using IRC forever in the future.
