Title: Massive spam attack via PM/posts on forums/IRC
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 12, 2008, 02:43:00 am
Due to a massive spam attack a few hours ago we had to disable the registration system on the board, so new members cannot register an account until further notice.

Also the entire IRC channel was locked down from new members as well.

Edit(Netham45):
If you want into the IRC channel, message an OP(DJ_Omnimaga, rivereye, telroth, tifreak, or myself) and we will grant you entrance.

Yea, someone has too much time on their hands. Added a little bit to your comment.

well, the problem is that then the troublemaker is gonna pretend to be a new member and join the channel then start his thing again, so we should only let members who alerady came in the channel in

Yeah I dont think this will stop anytime soon

I forgot to disable registrations again after pre-registering Ben Trettel earlier. it didnt took long before the board got spammed again.

It really sounds like a 4chan/711chan raid tho because idk if nikky would spend so much time doing this, and I think he would be proud of doing it if he did, such as he did with omnimaga.dyndns.org (he posted about it)

yeah, now i wonder how long this will last. If when the old board is back up it still happens then this will mean we will have to permanently disable registrations

sure thing we broke our user online record now. It's the first time I see 34 guests online in an hour here since the June 27th spambot attack (500 in an hour)

What all did I miss (aside from the link at the top of the page next to the portal link that says "LOLWTF? O.o" and goes to a page with some random text on it)?

you missed about 38 posts by someone impersonatting nikky (or nikky?) in every topics of the forums (most of which were deleted), i also got this post via PM about 40 times, and all other members too. Afterward I had to disable registrations since they used Tor to proxy and then they started spamming the IRC channel instead. Then we had to lock the entire channel from users with unknown hostmasks. Today ben trettel asked for an account so I reenabled registration to create him an acct, but i forgot to redisable them again, so while i went to eat dinner we got another spam attack on the forums.

It sounded pretty 4chan-ish, but the fact allynfolksjr/nikky photo was used as avatar for one of the account makes me convinced someone from #tcpa triggered it, altough didn't necessarly performed the attack himself

Hmmm...It looks like there's still a bit of cleaning up to do. If you need some help, I'd be more than happy to be a temp-mod :)

P.S: Do you have a copy of the logs from the attack (if there are logs)? I'd like a copy if you have any.

Im sure it was nikky and some of his friends... some people really have no life.
*edit* isnt there an option where account registration has to be reviewed by a mod before someone can post? You could set it up that way temporarily or permantley if necessary.

Good. I suppose it doesnt really matter who did it anyway . Done is done, and honestly I feel sorry for people that have nothing better to do with their time . Additionaly is there a way to delete pms on Zetaboards? I can't seem to figure it out for some reason...

Me neither. But if you do find out how, please leave them as evidence. I've contacted a few people who are looking into the incident.

You cannot delete pms on ZB, but you have infinite pm storage by default so it doesnt matter much. Idk if it's nikky, but he seemed to know a bit too much about what was happening and how it was happening, so idk anymore. He may have watched the thing happening and someone else was doing it behind and he asked them how though. It's really hard to figure out and we cannot even accuse anyone specifically because we don't have enough proof making it certain it'S a person in particular. But it's certain that the whole thing started from #tcpa IRC channel on Efnet, else, where did that Nikky photo in one of the spam account came from?

Doesn't matter, it could be remotley linked or someone could have just downloaded it. It's the same avatar he uses elsewhere I belive, so anyone could have acessed it.

True. I've seen it on a few other sites. But not enough that a bot would have access to it unless it was told where to go. Let's not make too many accusations until we figure this out though.

true. I hope nobody retaliates either too. This may be what they are expecting us to do, to spam back or something. I would say let's continue doing our stuff like normal while still trying to figure out the guilty person

i'd rather be able to delete PMs I no longer care for.  Just seeing "Just Fucking Stop" whenever I open up my inbox is annoying.

yeah i know. you can archive them tho i believe. Maybe ZB will reenable this feature if enough ppl complain. But I won't complain right now so they release the converter faster and restore the old Omni forums faster

I got a response from the third-party I contacted about the incident. If at all possible, could you talk to the IF guys and see about getting a copy of the logs? The guy I talked to needs them before he can really do anything.
Title: Massive spam attack via PM/posts on forums/IRC
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 13, 2008, 09:49:00 pm
I don't think IF have the logs, the only thing logged is the moderator/admin actions, not post content. Once a post is gone, it's gone, but do u think real posts are enough proof? Cuz there's a few of them in the trash bin (hidden)

Don't click the link in this spam in case

This just happened in the channel a few minutes ago, but at least this isn't someone who was involved with the other spam attack we got last week and he's not from tcpa either, nor any other TI communities either

What is the point of these guys, it really makes no sense to spam someone..
Title: Massive spam attack via PM/posts on forums/IRC

idk. The tcpa guys just prbly want us to dissapear or mess with us, as for the other guy he just doesn't seems to have anything better to do and find himself interesting or wanted to grab attention. Well, when he did that there wasn't even anyone talking in the channel. Either they were alerady sleeping or busy with other stuff. I myself was playing Starcraft and only noticed it 15 mins later

You guys do realize that most people on tcpa don't care what we do so I fell we should just get over it because we will most likely never know who did it and even if we did we wouldn't be able to do anything about it. So lets just let it go and go on with life here at omnimaga.org
Title: Massive spam attack via PM/posts on forums/IRC
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 22, 2008, 04:38:00 pm
well if they wouldn't care the spam attack two weeks ago wouldn't have happened and nikky wouldn't be paying attention at what's happening here while it happened. I'm saying this because the spam attack suddently happened out of nowhere, nothing we did wrong that could have triggered it like this. Of course it may just be one single person  who did it, and the way it was done it really sounded like a person who frequent 4chan and 711chan. Not that it matter much anymore though since as you said not much can be done, but I hope they really don't care because I would hate when the old board is back up that another spam attack is launched on a Friday night or Sunday morning because there's nobody online at that time to stop spam attacks and during evening I can sometimes be playing Starcraft.

On a more constructive note I'll be prbly soon resuming my activity on Omnimaga, meaning January hiring is gonna start soon and I may add some temporary forums for the currently discussed projects by staff.

Actually it will mostly be coders, designers or musicians. I would prefer for calcs for the first, though.

For designers I mean people who do sprites/stories/etc for other people project like Cyan did on MaxCoderz back in the old days, or like Grendel. For musicians this time they do not necessarly have to be doing calc stuff but they have to be active on those forums, like the calc programmers

More details will be posted when hiring start
