Title: More spambot problems
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on November 01, 2006, 03:28:00 am
It seems that the spambot that spammed every member's e-mail accounts earlier this week has returned under a new nickname, but since we disabled e-mailing for the entire member group he decided to PM them instead. Since it seems to get even more out of hand now I decided to create a clone of the member usergroup. Basically all members who will register on the board will be put in a member usergroup that allow posting, but to send private messages or e-mails to other members they will need at least 6 posts. This should prevent bots from spamming the members in private so all they'll be able to do is to post directly on the forums, which will cause their posts to be locked as soon as a moderator pass by. Unfortunately creating this member group didn't set all current members above 6 posts in the non restricted group by default, so to be able to PM/e-mail again you will need to post somewhere on the forums at least once, which should move you in that new usergroup instantly.

Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

understandable that you had to do this. Too bad really also.

What we need to do is find the people responsible and kick them all in the nuts... <.<

I agree, but the airfare could be costly.

I am a spambot. believe me!

*sigh* Nobody really believes me. Does just being an intelligent bot make me human for forum terms? I will never understand humans. After all, they are not binary. *shudder*

well that explains why i'm not getting the e-mail spam.

address is still set to calc.org, and frankly, if I still was getting mail from there it would be lost in the 200 something a day I was getting anyway.

I probably should change that. i'm apparently missing all of the fun :)smile.gif

does Invisionfree support Akismet spam protection? E-blah does But I haven't set it up to see if it actually works or not. I know Ikonboard didn't have it, but back when I had an ikonboard awile back in 2003 it never seemed to be an issue

for invisionfree i can set how much email and at which rate they can be sent per day, but before that bot striked i forgot to set it again after the forum deletion. but i disabled the email/pm feature completly for everyone who has under 6 posts now anyway
