Ndless 1.2 released for some TI-Nspire CAS prototypes
« on: March 08, 2011, 04:51:50 am »
Those who acquired a TI-Nspire CAS prototype that runs OS 1.2 can now experience ARM9 assembly and C games too. Thanks to bsl and critor, Ndless 1.1.1 has been ported to OS 1.2 and rebranded as "Ndless 1.2 Prototype", marking the first time a TI-Nspire CAS prototype is hacked to run third-party code.

Note that this only works on the P1R2-DVT prototypes that looks similar to a TI-Nspire CAS, but shows a special icon on the upper-left side of the screen during booting. A picture of the prototype in question can be found here. This version of Ndless requires OS 1.2.2344, which is currently available through TI-BANK.

Currently, this version of Ndless won't run on regular TI-Nspire prototypes as well as commercial calculators, as no OS 1.2 was found for these models. It will also not work with the CAS+ prototypes, as they function differently.

Ndless 1.2 Prototype can be downloaded here!

This is for people who accidentally bough a TI-Nspire CAS Clickpad Prototype instead of a commercialized TI-Nspire CAS Clickpad on Ebay. These prototypes cannot use the OS 1.1, 1.3, 1.4, 1.7, 2.0.1 and 2.1 required to run other available versions of Ndless, because they use a special unreleased OS 1.2 that can only be installed on these prototypes. As a result, people with such calc had no way to use Ndless at all. This special version of Ndless 1.2 solves this problem.

Not that there are many prototypes available on Ebay, but some sellers fools people with them because they look similar to real TI-Nspire CAS Clickpad models, which sucks for people who buys a cheaper used calculator mainly to use Ndless or expecting to upgrade it to 2.1.

Nah, I think they're signed with a different RSA key.

There are even older prototypes that have no USB protocol implemented, meaning they're stuck with OS 1.0 and no way to upgrade. If you delete the OS via the maintenance menu, you're screwed, the calc is useless.

Prototypes for the clickpad are still in circulation on Ebay, meaning even if you buy your clickpad in 2019, you still have chances to run into a bad calc. I don't know if CX prototypes were made. TI is aware of the prototype issue and is probably trying to make sure CX ones aren't leaked as easily.

Thank you very much for the news. :)

Some little precision: TI-Nspire CAS prototypes can come with "special" OSes 1.1 or 1.2.
We just ndlessed the most recent OS, as there is a downgrade protection (all TI-Nspire CAS prototypes can be upgraded to 1.2, but you cannot downgrade back to 1.1)

I could port Ndless 1.1 to the production OS1.2 , if I knew there was an advantage to do so.
Such as :
1)Is the power bug present in OS1.2 ?

Ndless 1.2 has advantages:
1) More memory and less OS overhead for better performance to run games like nDoom,nTris,NES emulator,....
2) I would have to look into making an ndless_resources.tns file so that Ndless1.7/2.0 programs are portable to Ndless1.2
3) A simple and very stable installation.
4) Any other Bug fixes and upgrades from OS1.1

OS1.2 disadvantages:
1) No touchpad support
2) OS1.2 availability.

Yeah an issue is if TI sent a DMCA notice to take copies of OS 1.2 down, then it would be very hard to find since it's not a commercial OS. Even the commercial OS 1.1 was hard to find.

As for the power bug, wasn't it on TI-Nspires made around 2008?

Starting from today, you can Ndless your basic TI-Nspire prototypes too, with "Ndless 1.1 prototype", a new port of "Ndless 1.1.1" by Bsl and me!
