Title: Ndless v3.1 beta for OS v3.1 with TI-Nspire CX support released
Post by: ExtendeD on January 19, 2012, 03:59:53 pm
(http://ndlessly.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/ndless3_small.png)

I’m excited to announce that Ndless v3.1 is moving to public beta stage! This version is proudly part of the simultaneous release of tools and programs that brings the full power of native developement to the TI-Nspire CX. The release includes PolyDumper (http://adriweb.free.fr/ndless/) (required by nspire_emu to run the CX OS), nspire_emu (http://ourl.ca/9360/279701), Nover (http://tiplanet.org/forum/archives_voir.php?id=3890), nDOOM (http://tiplanet.org/forum/archives_voir.php?id=3889), nRGBlib (http://ourl.ca/14731), gbc4nspire (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/426/42630.html), and NESpire (http://ourl.ca/7063/279702) compatible with the CX.

Ndless combines an SDK and an OS-v3.1 patch to allow third-party native development on the TI-Nspire classic and CX. This third generation wouldn’t have been possible without the invaluable help of several contributors and testers, including adriweb, bsl, calc84maniac, critor, Goplat, jimbauwens, Levak and Lionel Debroux.

As a beta version, it should be frequently updated with bug fixes and minor enhancements until the final release. The more feedback this version gets the faster it will reach a stable state. You can either post your problem reports and feature requests to this thread or on the tracker (http://www.unsads.com/projects/nsptools/report/1).

Download the latest beta (SDK + installer) (http://www.unsads.com/projects/nsptools/downloader/download/release/1) (temporary mirror (http://adriweb.free.fr/ndless/), mirror 2 (http://ndless.57o9.org)). Please don’t copy the file to your own site as it is frequently updated, prefer to share the URL.

Users, make sure to follow the User Guide (http://ndlessly.wordpress.com/ndless-user-guide) for installation instructions. TI-Planet also provides tutorials (http://tiplanet.org/forum/ndl3ss.php) in French and English. If you are having trouble with the installation, use the Troubleshooting Guide (http://ndlessly.wordpress.com/ndless-troubleshooting/).
New developers, make your first steps (http://ndlessly.wordpress.com/ndless-for-developers/) with the SDK.
Authors of Ndless 2 programs, upgrade them with TI-Nspire CX compatibility (http://hackspire.unsads.com/wiki/index.php/Ndless#From_v2.0_to_v3.1).

The up-to-date source code is available on the Subversion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_Subversion) trunk (https://www.unsads.com/scm/svn/nsptools/Ndless/trunk) (The login/password: guest/guest, you can accept the certificate).

New and noteworthy in v3.1:
- TI-Nspire CX compatibility
- Persistence: The installation is now reboot proof
- Extended libndls (http://hackspire.unsads.com/wiki/index.php/Libndls) API: on_key_pressed(), show_msgbox_2b(), show_msgbox_3b(), is_cx, is_classic, has_colors, hwtype, IO, IO_LCD_CONTROL, lcd_incolor(), lcd_ingray(), lcd_isincolor()
- New syscalls (http://hackspire.unsads.com/wiki/index.php/Syscalls): ftell(), truncate()

Unfortunately, I already seem to be having problems :P  I'm not quite sure if I am supposed to be posting it in this topic, but this is whats happening.  I have a regular TI-nspire.  I sent over ndless resources just fine, but when trying to send over the installer it would cause my calculator to reboot, and the computer link software said the handheld is not responding when it finished booting up.  Ideas?

- Is ndless_resources.tns sent to a folder named 'ndless' as expected?
- Are you then transfering 'ndless_installer-3.1.0.tno' since your calculator is a non-CAS classic TI-Nspire?

What OS version is your calculator?
Also, you need Ndless resources in a folder named ndless.

Ultimate Doom can be put on a non-CX if you have enough free space.
All levels are here: http://tiplanet.org/forum/archives_list.php?id=Niveaux%20Doom%20Nspire
The musics/sounds have been removed to make the files smaller.

TNOC might help ;)

Btw I think when the Ndless installed message appears, you must press OK as soon  as possible, because the first attempt at Ndless installling for me lead to the calc freezing (I didn't pay attention to the on-calc message because I thought it would take one or two minutes to install). The 2nd time I pressed OK immediately and it worked perfectly. Games run really smooth with barely any blur on my CX :D

I'm gonna try on my old Nspire later.

Btw just tried Ndless on my clickpad too with gbc4nspire and NESpire. Like on the CX, first install attempt crashed the Nspire, but then it froze again after reboot and then I tried installing Ndless again after pulling a battery and it worked fine on the second attampt.

For some reasons NESpire runs twice slower on the Clickpad than the CX, though. ???

By the way, is there a way to use it with OS 3.0.2 ? I think I read this somewhere...
Because I use this OS and I don't want to loose the print() in Lua.

No, Ndless 3.1 works only with OS 3.1.0.392 :)

Patching the 3.1.0.392 OS in RAM might do the job. Without that, print()-enabled Lua and Ndless 3.1 remain exclusive choices :)

On the CX but when I try to install as OS it says "Experienced a problem while communicating with the handheld. Retry may be successful." Usually gets half-way or near finished to install before calc reboots.

did you succesfully send the recources file in the correct directory? i think that's the only problem that might cause the prbolem, and you must have OS 3.1.0.392

It works perfectly!!!

i hate it when i'm not around for 2 days, and this happens, AARRRGHH (read: amazing good wonderful great perfect job)

I made a folder called ndless and sent the resources to that folder. Then when I send the installer.tco it gives me that error.

The .tco is for the classic, CX, non-CAS Nspire. Is that yours ?

Can you make sure that:
- OS v3.1.0.392 is installed on your calculator
- Your are copying ndless_resources.tns to a top-level directory named 'ndless' (mind the case)
- You are using Student Software to transfer ndless_installer-3.1.0.tco
Title: Re: Ndless v3.1 beta for OS v3.1 with TI-Nspire CX support released
Post by: Cuervo on January 22, 2012, 06:47:37 am
Wow, thank you for Ndless 3.1! It's awesome on my CX CAS.

- You are using Student Software to transfer ndless_installer-3.1.0.tco

Actually it's working with the Teacher Software as well. But it's not that good it has to be installed as an OS, as installing an OS on the CX-Models is only possible by buying software (Student or Teacher Software). The TI-Nspire Link Software 1.4 is not able to install CX-OS, and TILP isn't as well.

May I make a few suggestions?
In nspire-gcc, nspire-as and nspire-ld please replace
Code: [Select]
GCC=`(which arm-elf-gcc arm-none-eabi-gcc arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc | head -1) 2>/dev/null`with
Code: [Select]
GCC=`(which arm-elf-gcc arm-elf-gcc-4.6 arm-none-eabi-gcc arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc | head -1) 2>/dev/null`when installing arm-elf-gcc and binutils through MacPorts, it adds the version number..

Also, I get an error compiling it:

That's strange, because I used Tilp to update my CX to 3.1 and to install ndless...
maybe you have an older version of Tilp which can't? Mine is 1.16.

TILP II 1.16 does indeed support two operations that TINCLS 1.4 doesn't support: upgrading the OS of a CX (CAS), and getting 16 bpp screenshots.

Cuervo: your calculator is complaining about some yet unknown condition... which shouldn't be either "out of memory", "OS installation failed. File is corrupted/wrong." or of course "anti-downgrade protection refuses this OS version.", because those codes have been documented.
Hmm. Try making a backup of your files, making more room for the OS, and rebooting the calculator. If it keeps refusing the OS, I'll have to try and reproduce the problem :)
What OS version is your Touchpad CAS currently running ?

Ok, I think I'm posting too fast..
Here's the story:
I was happy with Ndless2 on OS 2.1.0 on my TI Nspire CAS Touchpad. I had batteries and the TI-Nspire Rechargeable Battery. Both were working fine.
Some time ago OS 3.0.2 came out and I wanted to try it, I removed the boot2 with TNOC and installed it on my Calc. It was quite nice, but it did not recognize the Rechargeable Battery, so I went back to 2.1.0. I got a CX CAS then, and everything worked great, including Ndless 3.1. So I updated my old Touchpad Calc to OS 3.1.0 with removed boot2. Because I do not use it much i took out the batteries so it would only run with the Rechargeable Battery. On OS 3.1.0 it was still not recognized (little triangle with "!" in it), so I wanted to install OS 3.1.0 with the updated boot2, which was not possible, because the Software told me, that the battery in the Nspire is too weak to perform an upgrade. So I reinstalled the AAA-Batteries and updated to the original OS 3.1.0 with the updated boot2, installed Ndless 3.1 and removed the AAA-Batteries again. It was still telling me, that the Rechargeable Battery was not recognized. I checked the diagnostic menu, but it said, that the Rechargeable Battery was OK and the voltage was above 3.7 V.
I tried to install OS 3.1.0 through TILP, but because it told me "Msg: hand-held returned an error (not caught). Cause: hand-held returned an uncaught error. Please report log." I was confused. In my case it meant, that the Nspire thinks the Rechargeable Battery was empty so it refused performing the update and TILP did not know this error.
So now I have a Nspire CAS Touchpad working perfectly fine except it does not show me how much power the Rechargeable Battery still has, so it keeps telling me I shall save my work and recharge the battery. Note: before the initial update to 3.0.2 or 3.1.0 it showed me, that it had 75 % charge.

So maybe somebody can implement the message, that the Nspire batteries are too drained to install the OS update.

Now, is it possible to install Ndless 3.1 with TILP?

Sorry,
Cuervo

In nspire-gcc, nspire-as and nspire-ld please replace
Code: [Select]
GCC=`(which arm-elf-gcc arm-none-eabi-gcc arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc | head -1) 2>/dev/null`with
Code: [Select]
GCC=`(which arm-elf-gcc arm-elf-gcc-4.6 arm-none-eabi-gcc arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc | head -1) 2>/dev/null`when installing arm-elf-gcc and binutils through MacPorts, it adds the version number..

This really depends on the system and the GCC version, and will always break.
You'd rather make a symbolic link to arm-elf-gcc on your system.

Anyone having problems with the installation of Ndless can now check the Troubleshooting Guide (http://ndlessly.wordpress.com/ndless-troubleshooting/) and post here if still stuck.

Yes. It has been done, AFAICT, and it would be a bug if it were impossible.

It gets stuck at around 2/3, and then the PC window closes after I click "OK" and then my calculator opens and I don't have...oh wait...it might've installed, I didn't get a window that said Ndless was installed though. How can I check?

One more thing:
Do you need to do anything "jailbreak" your calculator before that?
After installing I do not get "Ndless successfully installed"
And after I look in the folder it just shows resources.

Looking at the size and the speed, it cannot be possible.
It is possible though to do it, but it wouldn't look and run like this.
Porting DOSbox would be the easiest, but someone needs to take the task :)

Once set up, a project simply needs a 'make' to compile. This is a standard for C development.

are there any libraries to communicate with external devices?

like something to send/recieve signals through the same pins as we connect RS232.
that way we could make the calculator interface with anything through an arduino or picaxe...

So... You do the setup stuff first, and after you've done that and you modify the program, just do "make" to compile again?

USB is not yet supported, but you can directly interact with the UART for RS232:

After I uninstalled ndless and deleted the resource files, the calculator begun to go to sleep again and the screen dimmed properly when it was supposed to. However, after I reinstalled ndless, the problem returned. The screen will only dim sometimes and I don't think the calculator has ever gone to sleep since.

 I suppose I could uninstall and than reinstall ndless whenever I need it, but I think I'll be using it too much to make that solution worthwhile. It's not really a big deal anyway; I just don't want to forget to put it to sleep and have my battery drained right before a test or whatnot. Hopefully the author(s) takes note of this issue and looks into it while developing the next version.

By sleep, do you also mean it never turns OFF by itself and won't go in standby mode anymore when not used for an extended period of time?

Welcome to the forums by the way. :)

Personally, though, I always took the habit of turning my calc OFF manually in the past, because often I ran games and programs on it and forgot to stop the program from executing, so afterward I took no chance and decided to make sure my calc is turned OFF before I leave it alone.

Welcome to the forums by the way. :)

Thanks for the warm welcome, DJ.

To correct my earlier post, the calculator won't enter POWER STANDBY mode anymore when it is not being used. I have not yet checked to see if the HIBERNATE function works or not (I'm assuming this is where the calculator actually turns itself off by itself without closing programs or documents, essentially sleep mode). The auto dim function has worked on and off for me during the past few days. Right now it's working, while earlier it wasn't.

That is also a good habit you talked about and one I should get into, though I am still nervous that while living the hectic life of a college student I will forget to turn my calc off manually from time to time. =O

When installing Ndless, it appears to be some sort of modified OS, so maybe that interfers with standby mode. I guess ExtendeD should look into that.

I can't be sure of what I'm going to say but maybe it is a clue : when connected to the PC, the Nspire won't turn Off automaticly (true) whereas unplugged it enters standby (IIRC).

Remeber that your Nspire (any model) can is powered by USB (you can remove the batteries/accu if you wish check).

Yes, my Nspire came preloaded with OS 3.1 as I had just purchased it recently. Just to elaborate the calculator also had absolutely no problems standing by or dimming until Ndless was installed, and reverts back to having no problems when I uninstall it.

After a week or so of use in class, it still fails to standby most of the time no matter what setting I put it on; though dimming has seemed to work consistently of late.

From what I think, the file formats and link with the actual app is hard-coded, so basically Ndless sees gbc4cx and gbc4cx2 or whatever alternate name you give it as different programs.

Thank you for your help! I renamed it back to gbc4cx (also in the cfg) and it now works kind of. Now if I open game.gb.tns, it just starts gbc4cx. I don't know if this is the whole file association, because I thought it would open it with gbc4cx, but this is cool too ;)

I have been trying to install ndless onto my touch pad Nspire, I have downloaded the ndless file and transferred it to my calculator, The installer isn't able to be transferred with the folder (it says some unsupported were not transferred) and when I try to move just the installer it starts to install it but then my calculator resets and the connection software says connection has been lost and to try again. When I try to transfer it from my documents to my calculator it says that it is an unsupported file and won't transfer it. Can anyone help me?
To install it, you should have a folder called ndless with ndless_resources.tns and nsless.cfg.tns . Then you should just drag the ndless_installer-3.1.0 with the right extension to you calculator within the student software. It should give the message on your calculator Ndless has been installed. You can ignore error give by the student software while installing. You can test whether it works with colors.tns or particles.tns, which can be found calcbin/samples.

From what I think, the file formats and link with the actual app is hard-coded, so basically Ndless sees gbc4cx and gbc4cx2 or whatever alternate name you give it as different programs.

ndless.cfg.tns is rather a configuration file with predefined values :) A text editor can be used on computer-side to change the default definitions (http://ndlessly.wordpress.com/ndless-user-guide/#file-association). On-calc edition is currently not supported (someone had released an on-calc text editor, but is it still maintained?).

Thank you for your help! I renamed it back to gbc4cx (also in the cfg) and it now works kind of. Now if I open game.gb.tns, it just starts gbc4cx. I don't know if this is the whole file association, because I thought it would open it with gbc4cx, but this is cool too ;)

gbc4nspire has not yet been updated to open the .gb file clicked. nDoom, nPlayer and NESpire have.
Maintaining gbc4nspire is quite difficult since calc84maniac unfortunately lost its source code.

Ok, thanks for you answer!
Another question: Maybe someone can make it possible to link your devices with the cable you got with the calculator. Just like with the gameboy connection cable, you would be able to eg. trade pokemon, fight eachother etc.

That wouldn't be simple at all, especially without my source code. Nobody has really attempted raw USB calc-to-calc linking with Ndless yet, either.

They can indeed do something - but they haven't done so in nearly five years, and they have consistently crossed our right to use the hardware we own the way we see fit.
They focus on teachers and test regulation authorities, not on users.

Yes you have to.
"Start" > Right click on "Computer" > "Properties" > "Advanced system settings" (last item in the list at the left) > at the bottom "Environment settings" or something like this > search for "Path" (and non PATH) in the bottom list > click on Edit/Modify > add a ";" at the end, and then your path to ndless/sdk/bin

Do I really need an RS232 adapter in order to run that hello world program?

Is it needed to run console stuff like puts( and printf(?
Is it needed for scanf(, too?

You can run the hello world program without a RS232 adapter, but then you won't see the result :)
And I'm not aware that we read anything from the RS232 port.

There is unfortunately no builtin console at the moment.
If you run it on nspire_emu, you will see the output in the DOS console.

I tried
Code: [Select]
yvel=randMinMax(-256, 256);and also using
Code: [Select]
yvel=rand()%513-256;which both give me errors. (http://pastebin.com/qjXkNgdt)

I'm using nRGBlib, and according to Levak,
Quote from: Levak
it seems there is a conflict between libRGB rand and yagorto one

Anyone have any ideas?

Also, how could this line cause my calc to crash?
Code: [Select]
yvel+=rmov;

Here's another potential bug (or maybe it's just me?)
When building my program in Ndless r557, the console gives me these errors:
Code: [Select]
In file included from main.c:4:0:
/home/philip/lib/gcc/arm-none-eabi/4.6.2/../../../../arm-none-eabi/include/string.h: At top level:

/home/philip/Downloads/ndless-r557/sdk/bin/../include/os.h:243:1: note: previous definition of ‘strlen’ was here

I find that "strlen" was defined in line 47 of syscalls.h. Is there a conflict between this and something already defined in gcc?

Ok, either I'm just too inexperienced with C, or theres something thats screwing up here...

When I add simple lines like:
yvel+=rmov;
and
yvel=-yvel;
my calc crashes when running the program... I have no clue why.

I was able to get yvel+=ymov; to work by making an unnecesary function to do what that line should have done D:

Try saying yvel = yvel + rmov instead, and see if that works.
Title: Re: Ndless v3.1 beta for OS v3.1 with TI-Nspire CX support released
Post by: epic7 on February 26, 2012, 07:09:53 pm
I tried that before; it still crashed.

I had rmov go to 128 at first, and used that function.
Then changed rmov to 64 to tweak the effect, and it didn't seem to change yvel again.
Then, I changed it back to 128, which was how it was before when it worked, and IT CRASHES. Then, I changed it back to 64 and not only does it not work like before, it now crashes the calc!
How hard can it possibly be to add two variables together?
And also doing yvel=-yvel still crashes the calc for some reason!
Now, simply having the line lmov=-64 crashes it!
Does the - sign not mean negative in C like in axe?

I give up. I'll try it again tommorow.

Yes. You shouldn't use gcc libs only if you know what you're doing, because most of syscalls are already found (not all of them sadly).
Functions like strlen, strcat, strcmp etc ... are in os.h, you don't need string.h, just try to remove the #include =)  (same for other libs)

I made the variables local, now the program actually runs. However, I'm still left with issues where I can't find what I'm doing wrong , like having yvel set to 128, and then y+=yvel; doing absolutely nothing :banghead:  :banghead: :banghead:

For now, you need to relocate them manually, with nl_relocate*.
Title: Re: Ndless v3.1 beta for OS v3.1 with TI-Nspire CX support released
Post by: ExtendeD on March 07, 2012, 02:52:54 pm
Not all global variables need a special treatment, only those containing string constants and reference to other global elements. nl_relocdata() is documented on Hackspire (http://hackspire.unsads.com/wiki/index.php/Ndless_features_and_limitations#Global_variables_and_initialization).
Consider this as a limitation of GCC and not Ndless. GCC doesn't emit relocation information for these variables as it should, and I see no good reason for this.

But his globals that are failing contain integer values, so theoretically those shouldn't cause problems, right? Or maybe some GCC flags are at fault (like -fpic versus -fpie or whatever)

Anybody know of a good way to draw stuff to the screen in nRGBlib?

My current strategy causes everything to blink like crazy.

I do-

Loop
{
Draw object
Pause
Do code stuffs
Draw white over object
Update object's coordinates
}

Doesn't nRGBlib let you draw without updating the screen? I haven't actually looked at it yet, but if so just don't update after the white, only after drawing the pictures.

Getting your hands on Ndess 3.1 just before an exam may be a bit risky. But if you still want to upgrade, make sur to *never* delete ndless_resources.tns from the calc while Ndless is installed. This is where most problems come from.

And don't use AHB overclocking, only CPU overclocking. On the CX, AHB overclocking is the easiest way to corrupt data in NAND Flash memory, which requires a reformat of the entire filesystem through the built-in maintenance menu.
