Title: New comment rating system (Youtube-alike) and forum bug fixes
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 29, 2009, 06:07:56 pm
Until a few minutes ago, members could give or remove 1 reputation points from members at a certain interval of time. People would give thumbs up and down based on people contributions in the community. However, the forum now uses a new reputation system where people can vote on individual posts and topics, like Youtube comments. Basically, users' karma will now be tied directly with their posts.

There are a few differences, though. First, each members can only give one thumb up or down per comment. Secondly, it is possible to cancel your vote on a comment by simply clicking the colored thumbs icon again, or to negate your vote by clicking the other thumbs icon. Third, this new feature comes with a new karma system that displays in your post personal info or your profile like the old karma system. This reputation level, called "Respect", is the total of positive and negative comment ratings you received on the entire board. If one of your comment receives negative rating, this total will automatically go down. If one of your comment receives positive rating, this total will automatically go up. Fourth, comments are not hidden when they received a certain amount of negative ratings. This might, however, become an option at a later date if we figure out how to make this feature not look horrible on the current forum skin.

There was also a forum update involving bug fixes, mostly with the arcade system and broken modification install files, which caused most modifications to no longer be possible to uninstall.

So, that's where the starting page went for the few minutes I've tried. I was almost starting to get annoyed, since I figured I lost the ability to browse the new topics without actually browsing the forum. (terrible, I know, but it's how I can catch up with the newer topics without having to look)

I *was* going to go to the IRC chat to go and complain about the "borked" thing, but now that everything's fixed and better than ever, I've got to say: Kudos. And other cherry-flavored stuff.f

early edit: Exactly where are these "thumbs"? If they're there, they aren't rendering in Google Chrome. I'm gonna try some other browser to see if the result is the same.
later edit: I'm lost. Screenshot with MS-Paint annotation (or similar) requested.

The upper right hand corner of the post.  They're mostly white so it's sort of hidden.

Same here.  I'm using Firefox, and all I get is a 0, and when i put my mouse over it, it gives a ?, and then says 'The current Score of this Post'

EDIT: Tried IE and got the same thing :(

Can you guys see the following images fine if clicking on it?

If so, you might need to refresh your browser cache, as they were added to the site while the forum was open for browsing, not in maintenance mode. Else, I have no clue what might cause it, because for me, in Opera v9.64, Firefox v3.03, IE v8.0.6001.18702, Safari 4.0 and Google Chrome 2.0.172.33, I see them fine

I still can't see it, regardless of what I do. Are you sure this feature is enabled for everyone? As far as I can see, it might be visible only to admin.

edit: I say this because the only posts I see that have a success with seeing it include admin, while everyone else is of a different membership type. I'm not sure if this is enough posts to draw that kind of conclusion, but...

DJ Omnimaga, try creating a "normal" account and see if you can see it.

I just checked and regular members can't use them.

[edit] It should be fixed now.

yeah there was an error with the installed mods causing the arcade to no longer be uninstallable and the portal to give errors if uninstalled. I did the same thing that I did the last time the site crashed and just reinstalled SMF 1.1.9 large upgrade files. Afterward I manually reinstalled all mods
