Title: New TI-Nspire OS coming out in May 2011?
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on April 22, 2011, 08:36:09 pm
TI has announced (http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=218722561474788&id=132142133466165) on Facebook that a fix to TI-Nspire OS 3.0.1 would come out in May.

OS 3.0.1 contains three bugs: One with some math functions as shown in the screenshots on this page (http://ti.bank.free.fr/index.php?mod=news&ac=commentaires&id=1056), a battery power detection problem (http://ti.bank.free.fr/index.php?mod=news&ac=commentaires&id=1057) causing the calculator to report 0% battery power even when they are still good and the extreme major bug causing the calculator to permanently stop working due to a Boot2 3.0 issue (http://ourl.ca/10540).

We hope that the new OS fixes those, but we would advise against upgrading when it comes out, so people can make sure it's safe for developers and gamers. We hope that the new OS doesn't come with a protection against 3rd-party Lua files (like how they blocked tns files generated by 3rd-party tools), an even stronger anti-downgrade protection or... *shivers* this (http://ourl.ca/10053).

I'll definitely wait to upgrade. I'll have to see if this is a safe OS.

This is so like TI release a beta with lots of bugs that they call a final product. At least now we know why they haven't released the CX's yet...

Yeah maybe this is a bit why the new calc is taking a bit to come out. Casio released the Prizm with plenty of bugs, although fortunately none can permanently brick the calc.

I wish TI learned their lesson from OS 2.0, which did the same thing as OS 3.0.1. They released OS 2.0.1 quickly afterward.

If the problem is with the boot2 updater as we've hypothesized, then it wouldn't affect the CX (CXes would already have boot2 3.0, so the updater would not run).

maybe they didn't know what the bugs would be. They just wanted us to test their calcs and OS's for them

Well, one thing's for sure -- they need to fix that bug.

They just HAVE to fix all the bugs, their profit is at risk and the success of the CX also...

Hahahahahahaha, we won. I am surprised that TI decided to make a fix to this OS.

Scout: having to repair the calcs bricked by their faulty OS costs them money. This is probably a more powerful motivation that the PR disaster we're actively helping develop ;)

Well, bricking is pretty serious. It's not like those bugs and glitches we got with 2.53 and those other OSes, which most normal users wouldn't experience. And as Lionel pointed out, that's another $100-$200 per bricked calc, plus the customer loss. With the ACT and AP tests coming up, I'm more surprised they haven't fixed it yet.

TI ought to at least replace the bricked calculators for free.

They probably do if you live in the USA...

TI customer service in France and other European countries seems pretty good though...

It may be good, but sending the calculator to the repair service means that if they cannot borrow one, and are unwilling to buy another one, affected users remain without a calculator for days, or even weeks (in theory)...

France is one of the best European countries when it comes to TI's support. Over here in Sweden, pretty much everything is terrible... This kinda applies to Casio too.

I hope this update won't get rid of LUA support, that would really suck!

You must have forgotten that this from TI... Yeah... They seem more interested in blocking our ability to use it, than adding and improving features.

At the ti site education.ti.com they say "Graph in 3D Graph and explore functions in a 3D space with the powerful 3D graphing functionality, ideal for science subjects and higher mathematics such as Precalculus and Calculus" but you cannot graph lines and curves with their 3d graphing capability.  This would seem to be a deliberate deception on ti's part so if you are interested in this new capability beware.

Wow that sucks. That said, I bet somebody could write a better 3D graphing program for Ndless anyway.

Personally, my Nspire Clickpad runs OS 3.0.1, but I did very careful before installing the OS to make sure to remove the new Boot2. Also I am relunctant about getting a CX, even if I like to have almost every model.

Well, make3D can certainly do better than that :P

@Dingus, the 3D graphing doesn't need the new hardware anyways, it works on the old ones with the newest OS.

Yeh, but if you put OS 3.0 on the old (Non-cx) hardware thats when the bricking occurs.

Yeah true. I feel bad for all the people who don't frequent calc sites and don't know about TNOC and downloaded OS 3.0.1 while it was available...

Someone should port Graph3D to Ndless 2.0/1

Does someone have the instructions to write a new boot2 via serial? I'm a tinkerer with electronics so i'm not scared but i don''t know how to write the new boot2/

THis might be a good idea to ask in the calculator help section maybe (in a new topic), so people find your question easier. Maybe some people might know.

You still need to sign it though if you want the calc to accept it... and sadly we don't have the keys.

Me to.  The really really big question is what sort of problems are going to be found with the cx models when a lot of them start being used?  Then the really really really big question is what will TI do about them?

I'm one of those idiots who updated without removing the new boot2(my calc didn't brick).... I just want to rewrite an older boot 2 to have the ability to downgrade.

I don't think it's possible to downgrade boot2...

I'M not sure. I doubt there will be many more, unless they managed to make the color code ultra buggy or that the hardware breaks easily. However we never know...

Nah you aren't one. Most TI users will visit calc websites months after getting their machine. It's inevitable that they don't know what OS 3.0.1 can do and that a tool to fix it exists on the Internet. Texas Instruments did not write in the TI-Nspire Link software update box that OS 3.0.1 requires TNOC prior installing. It's really TI who are at fault here.

But yeah as I said you should post a new topic about your question, so it can be seen easier.

winsock, you found the appropriate link for the hardware part.

Just to say one of the bugs Casio had in the Prizm was actually a good thing that I hope they don not fix. The bug was that the app CRC is disabled if is set to 0. This allows us to do unrestricted app coding.

Aah that's the one. :D I hope they don't fix it indeed. It would suck if Casio went the same way as TI, either intentionally or unintentionally. X.x
