Title: Notice about OmnomIRC
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on June 05, 2010, 02:42:23 am
Just as a head up, we would like to recommend forum users who are logged in to not leave like 5-10 Omnimaga tabs open in your browser all the time, especially when going away for a while, as this takes a lot of bandwidth on the OmnomIRC server (and may slow it down). Now, OmnomIRC is be setup to automatically stop working after a few minutes (hopefully until you send a new message again) so this should not be a problem as much, but we encourage users to still be careful when browsing the website quickly. In the future we might try to figure out a way to allow users to disable it altogether through cookies, which should be very helpful for people who use Firefox on old computers.

Just some stats about the server usage:

Most of my server is OmnomIRC. I have some forums, and a couple code repos on there, but they're using maybe 3GB/mo max.

My monthly bandwidth for the past two months has been 33.5GB/35GB used, and 33.8GB/35GB used. This is right on the head of where I want it to be.

Right now, for June, I've used 8GB.

8/5 = 1.6 GB/day
1.6*31 = 49.6GB for the month of June. I would rather avoid paying extra for the server that OmnomIRC is on, and this is why I am asking you guys to limit the usage. just to point it out, I am currently paying $276/yr for the server that OmnomIRC is on(Granted, OmnomIRC is a small portion of what *I* use it for, I have quite a few other things on it.)

Also, if anyone notices any glitches with OmnomIRC now(either ascetically or functionally), please let me know, either by posting in this thread(preferred), or over PM(Don't do it unless it's a potentially abusable glitch)

Sorry about having to ask you guys to curb the usage a bit, but I'm on the line of what I can do, bandwidth-wise.

You could drastically reduce OmnomIRC bandwidth, with making users only enable it in one single tab.
I personally don't mind, it is only one click, but I don't know what are your thoughts about how it should be used.

Other measure could be time outs for when you hide OmnomIRC, but does not seem a good idea for the users.

I already employ friendly band-width measures since ever. I open a lot of tabs while reading posts but when I leave the pc I close them or just leave a few remaining for less than 15 minutes.

I personally only ever browse Omnimaga with one tab open. Hopefully we can find a way to reduce bandwidth usage as OmnomIRC is the primary way I use IRC ( I really love it because of the convenience). As for glitches, I have seen only one for OmnomIRC, and that is that the time displayed is always incorrect. Spybot has a minor glitch I've seen as well, and that is sometimes after someone makes a post in one thread if someone posts shortly after in a different thread, Spybot will report both posts as being in the first thread.

I typically only browse with one tab unless I'm replying and need to look up other information. So I'm not a big problem, but I like the idea of a button to enable/disable OmnomIRC, with it disabled by default.

But, if I close the OmnomIRC tap and open multiple tabs for the forum, does that still take bandwidth? because I've been doing that all the time... If it does take lots of bandwidth, then it's not hard to switch back to one-tab browsing :)

Unfortunately all open Omnimaga tab, even with OmnomIRC minimized, will still take bandwidth.

Now, though, Netham45 made OmnomIRC disable itself after 4 or 5 minutes, so any unnattended tabs will eventually end up with OmnomIRC having a link saying session timed out, click here to refresh OmnomIRC.

I personally browse on Omnimaga with multiple tabs, but I always close all of them when I'm finished.

i useually browse with multiple tabs when i can but i never leave them open so yeah

for me its more of hoping that i can browse omni with javascript enables x.x as omnomIRC like to make me "idle" with chrome open at 70% cpu usage meaning i cant even scroll on the forums ;.; (granted a 850mhz computer dont do good in general but yeah ;.;)

What about requiring the OmnomIRC to be enabled beforehand? I know I tend to open new tabs without ever using the IRC, and just read one or two topics on other pages. That might reduce server load, and I think it shouldn't be too hard to get used to.

Not sure, I would rather it be visible the first time you arrive on the forums.

Personally I never get more than three tabs open. (Normal for browsing, Sometimes the Music Player, and One that's open if I click a link to another post.)  I hope you can get the bandwidth under control Netham. :)

I see it automatically disables itself now.

What if it were changed so that it would automatically disable whenever it's hidden? I generally hide it when I'm not reading it to save space, and I imagine many others would do the same. Besides, not many people read hidden messages :)

I'm not sure if that is possible, because OmnomIRC iFrame is not directly tied to the forum system. They are totally separate, unlike Cemetech chat box

This.

But, I think I see a way I could make them somewhat tied in together without many issues, I'll have to experiment with it sometime when I have a chance, whenever that'll be. Basically, I'd just move the iFrame code into the shoutbox, that way I could control the javascript refresh loops, and also have sending a message reset the timer.

That would be cool ^^

We also need a feature that can make cups of coffee for when we chat during morning and we're still half asleep ^^

How many different languages is this programmed in?  It sounds difficult to understand, so good luck getting it fixed. :D

I think it's PHP + AJAX javascript. Not sure about the rest, though. OmnomIRC logs are hosted on his server, while the rest is hosted on 1and1.

PHP for parsing the logs, Javascript for the AJAX and log refreshing, and an mIRC bot to connect to IRC with.

I wonder if making the bot linked to the database would add a lot of load of the MySQL db server?

1and1 disallows chat scripts and scripts putting major load on the server. Altough this would be only forum posts, my concern is about when we get like 150 in a few hours like Monday afternoon and when we have high activity during several days in a row. There were 446 posts just yesterday

I have no way of getting into the DB itself better than what SMF provides to me already with it's RSS feeds. I can make it check more than one post, I just need a chance to sit down and do it. I've had almost no free time recently.

Yea. It seems like I'm either 1000 miles from home or working full-time. >.<
