Title: nPlayer Released!
Post by: apcalc on June 13, 2011, 07:04:40 pm
Though I actually "finished" the current version a while back, I have finally decided to release nPlayer! :)

nPlayer allows one to play videos on the TI-Nspire through Ndless and several computer programs.  Though a somewhat simple process, it does yield beautiful results!

Screen shots are available in the nPlayer (http://ourl.ca/9022) topic and the ticalc (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/439/43939.html) file info page.

Enjoy! :)

Nice to hear. You should probably include a link to the project thread in the readme so people can ask there too if they need help.

Also I need to try this eventually, although I have OS 3.0.1 D:

Do you plan to implement scaling eventually? So smaller videos still shows up full screen (or at least 2x larger if they're at least 2x smaller than the LCD)

Video size is decided while using the video->bmp converter on the computer (SUPER).  This has options for several sizes, including 320x240.  I used the smaller size to save on memory!  nPlayer can use any size, provided that it fits the screen! :)

Yeah I know but that's not what I was asking. I was asking if it would be possible in the future to display smaller resolution videos in full screen, using zooming/scaling?

Also do you plan to include Omni link (to the Nplayer discussion) in the next versions? Also are you planning to put it in the downloads section?

Yes, that is a possibility in the future, but my first priority is working on a better compression method.

I was planning on putting this in the Omni archives tonight, but I had to go to a friend's party and was away from my computer.  Likewise, I could have sworn I put an Omni like in the pdf file (I probably accidentally deleted it when I edited the last part of it last night).  I will update both tomorrow!

Now for color videos...

Very nice job!

Oh yeah color vids will be nice when Ndless arrives on the CX. I wonder, though: Would they be possible in Lua? I assume they would take much more space and have slightly lower FPS, right?

Right, DJ, videos would certainly be slower and take more space in Lua :)

I am now very sad that I have OS 3.0.1. :P
Nice job! :D

Nice work with nPlayer
I think this was mentioned a while ago, but someone pointed out students might start taking "inappropriate" videos to school on their calcs. :P

That may be indeed, but it's out of the scope of apcalc and, in general, the community :)

I think it would be pretty slow, as a 240*320 15 bit color takes a little while (under a second, but still slow) to load. It would probably be a frame rate of 2fps :/

I agree with Jim Bauwens, it would probably be very slow :(

pr0n... followed by calculator ban from school...  <_<

J/k, I doubt anyone from the community would do such thing anyway, and school students that mostly care about that kind of material will most likely not necessarily find nPlayer online, as they probably don't spend their time on calc/technology sites. :P

I agree. I don't think horny teenagers would be wasting their time on the computer here on Omnimaga, so it is unlikely to happen.
