Title: Nspire CX Officially Announced by TI!
Post by: apcalc on February 24, 2011, 09:56:58 pm
Although it was announced today that the Nspire CX woudl be "released" on TI's website tomorrow at noon, it seems they have already done so:

http://education.ti.com/calculators/products/US/nspire-family/

Lots of nice pics of the new calcs are there!

Here is the rundown of the new features of OS 3.0 Release Notes (http://education.ti.com/sites/US/downloads/pdf/TI-Nspire%203%200%20Release%20Notes.pdf):

3D Graphing
Differential Equation Graphing
New Statistics Stuff
DataQuest App
Picture Viewing

Sadly, there is no mention of new programming capabilities, or updating the 84 emulator. :(

Here are the technical specifications of the TI-Nspire CX and the TI-Nspire CX CAS:

Screen size: 320 x 240 pixels
Screen resolution: 125 DPI; 16-bit color
Powered by the TI-Nspire Rechargeable Battery (included)
Memory: 100 MB storage memory / 64MB operating memory
USB port for computer connectivity, unit-to-unit communication with other TI-Nspire family handhelds.

:w00t:

UPDATE: Some new pictures of the calculator can be found below. We are linking to them since they are big:

THanks for posting this, I was gonna post a news but was unsure if someone would beat me to it. I'll edit your post with technical specs.

100 MB of storage memory and 64 MB of operating memory seems nice, but I hope on the old Nspires OS 3.0 will not take like 30 MB O.O

Hmm...looks like for the wireless functionality a special adapter is needed :P

Now I am curious what programming capability it will add...

According to Apcalc the calc doesn't come with a slide case. They have to be purchased separately. O.O

Greedy bastards...

EDIT: Since it was supposed to be announced at noon time tomorrow, I wouldn't be surprised if they removed the site pages until then now that people found out, but again maybe they'll not. In case, however, I made a low quality video where I navigate through parts of the new site sections :D

This is great news, but

Wait, what? Every calculator since the TI-80 has had a slide case! D: What is TI doing?

And still no signs of any decent programming functions or assembly... Hopefully we still can someday.

But on the other hand, the specs are great. Especially for student use.

Now if only we could use it...

Does that mean 128mb of flash and 64mb of ram, just imagine what we could do with a color screen and that much space. Come on TI, you know we'll find a way in eventually.  :banghead:

I wonder what compatibility with older nspires actually is....I don't see anything in the docs. They probably switched keys too :(

BTW android could prob. run on this :)

No case ?! O_O

The wi-fi thingy, will we able to actually utilize it?
(Well, the only thing that I can think of is.... color screen + touchpad + wi-fi = StarCraft in nspire...)

A CAS allows you to use a lot of extra functions (like simplifing and expanding equations) that the ACT board apparently wants you to be able to do in your head...

Here is a quote from Foster@TI:

TI-Nspire is our newest product focused on secondary and higher education math and science. At this point, we have not yet opened the platform to programming, however, that is in our future plans.
That was found here. (http://www.unitedti.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=9649)

I wonder if this means there is more info they have yet to release, though? They did say that info was coming out today and I even got a message from this Foster@TI to check today at noon.

Therefore someone needs to write a CAS for those poor CASless Nspires.

Deal  :D

By the way, the Nspire CX will have a slightly lower screen resolution than the Casio Prizm:125 DPI as opposed to the Prizm's ~146. Since the screen has fewer pixels as well, I hope that the display won't be too blocky.

It depends if the slide-cases or not included:

In the package:
Handheld
TI-Nspire Rechargeable Battery
Wall Adapter (the TI-Nspire CX Docking Station is included with teacher packs)
TI-Nspire Software (student or teacher, trial or perpetual depending on the configuration purchased)
USB computer cable
Unit-to-unit cable
Slide Case or TI-Nspire Screen Cling (depending on the configuration purchased)

My guess is that they will make this available for the CX eventually, through a paid SDK (seeing as slidecases are now sold separately, I wouldn't be surprised if they also made us pay for the SDK), but I do not think it will ever match the freedom of Ndless. They'll probably put some limitations to make sure we don't crash the calculator as easily.

I bet OS 3.0 will come out a bit later but not too far after the new calc release. I wonder if the older Nspires will still be available in stores afterward? One bad part of the Nspire was the screen quality so students most likely complained about that. After all, the TI-83+, 89T and 84+ screen was much easier to read than the Nspire due to better contrast.

According to one article I read about the CX, the old Nspires will still be produced short-term and TI will "let the market decide" if they will be produced long-term.

This new calc looks cool!  I wonder what it's like with the slidecase on.  Because of the stand in the back, does this mean that sometimes the slidecase won't go on the back of the calc?

I think the stand is optional to purchase separately (so is the slide case).

We don't even know if there's programming... As shrear said, it could very well just be the Nspire BASIC "language."

I guess the slidecase will be about $10, the calc about $145, the battery $49, the keypad $10, the LCD $10 and the keys in it $10. :P

Just kidding, but damnit I'm really shocked they even sell slidecases separately now... to me it looks like they want the price to look artificially lower, but finally you need to buy extra accessories...

Hmm I didn't see that. But does environment and programming libraries necessarily means BASIC commands such as Line(), pxl-on, Text(), Getkey and the like?

Also will they improve the ease-of-use of this calc in general? I never understood why it was so hard to figure out how to perform 2+2 on this calc.

A lot of my friends who got Nspires were immediately confused by the document system. Most people who use calculators for math expect math to be the first and only thing they see when they turn the calculator on, or at least a click away like on the TI-89. TI should have kept the document system separate as an actual editor IMO. It's like they meant for the Nspire to be a developer/teacher's calc and then left out the programming.

Can't wait for this to come out, but it might still be a while before people start putting it up on EBay for a way cheaper price. I might possibly get it for the full price, but does anyone know a cheaper way to get it? I mean way cheaper way, you can get TI-89 on ebay for like $50 if no one else bids on them.
Title: Re: Nspire CX Officially Announced by TI!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 25, 2011, 09:57:34 pm
I'll get mine on Ebay even at full price, unless it's over $200 including shipping to Canada. However, watch out for prototypes, if people leak them. We know what happened with regular TI-Nspire and CAS: prototypes could not be updated with official OSes. Sadly I do not know a cheaper way to get them.

Definitely not.
The line found by broooom has neither explicit mention, nor explicit denial, of this system of libraries being limited to BASIC. But "programming libraries for global access to user-defined functions & programs" has been available for a while, and "dedicated programming environment" is very vague a wording.
It's not entirely impossible that TI gives up on their 5-year-old shut-the-door-to-programming stance, that said. But it's probably not likely :)

If OS 3.0 / the Nspire CX proves to have a better programming environment than the previous versions, I'll admit to have rained on the parade and dashed people's hopes (even though I usually mention that a change is never impossible). But until then, I do, because people shouldn't fall to TI's marketing campaign :)

Wow, 100MB storage and 64MB operating memory. How generous, I was not expecting this. Also; It appears that some units will ship with a slide cover and some will ship with a screen protector. I am also glad that this is being advertised as their thinnest design yet, very promising.

Yea, this doesn't mean anything unfortunately. The previous Nspire models have the same exact description. And what do we have on those models? That's right! A shitty dumbed down version of BASIC. =(

one way we can protest to this new Nspire if it has crap programming abilities is everyone in the TI community rating it one star on Amazon and other online retailers, and put a detailed description why ;)  then TI will know not to mess with us, a 1 Star average rating with 100 reviews/rates will make them lose a LOT of money on this thing.  You see, Email isn't the only way to go ;)

We should warn TI we will do that if there is no programming environment and see what they do. We have plenty of members who own nspires because of nDoom. We could just post if you want a programming environment on your calc go rate the CX down and give detailed descriptions why. I believe that might be able to help.

I doubt giving the new Nspire poor reviews because it lacks the programming capability to make decent games will change anyone's mind. Least of all TI's. It is a calculator first and foremost and it's primary function is to be able to carry out math functions with speed, precision, and ease of use. The primary userbase/ education community could care less if this thing is open to gamedev.

there are plenty of math things you can do with the programming. It might do nothing I don't know. I just would realy like a non-hacking way for a programming environment.

I guess TI realized how much space their OSes took up :P I'm guessing it is really a 128mb flash chip, with 28mb reserved for the os. The 64mb of ram it comes with will sure be useful, though. I wonder if 3d graphing means it gets 3d rendering hardware?

Unlike the prizm, this seems to have a normal lcd display with backlight, so the battery life won't be that great.

And yeah 3D is all software-generated. The 83+ has no native 3D graphing function, yet you can still do 3D on the calc or make your own 3D grapher.

First off, congrats on the 1000th post.

And basically, that letter says to me that you shouldn't ask questions, hush now... Oh well, let's try once someone actually gets one.  (Any volunteers?)

Stefan Bauwens already did, about Getkey, to the Belgian division of TI-Cares. Here's the topic: http://ourl.ca/9364
I don't think this will help someone who wants to use the getkey command on an nspire but because I was interested to know if there would be an update(ever) to have the getket command, I contacted TI.

This is what I wrote:

Comments: HI,

I have a question about the ti-nspire.
I heard that you can program for it. But I also have heard that you can't use the function 'getkey()'.
This is quite important in many programs. I program 68k basic programs and I see this as a very negative point.

Isn't the ti nspire supposed to be more 'advanced' than the 68k calcs?

I would be pleased that in a future update this function can be used.

Waiting for a reply,

Stefan

And this is what I received:
Code: [Select]
Dear Stefan,

The TI-Nspire indeed does not have the getkey() programming function.
Actually, the only I/O command is 'disp'.
In general, programming on the TI-Nspire was not meant for real programming, but more for writing small programs requiring one input (entered before program execution) to e.g. automate calculations which need to be done frequently. There are currently no plans to make changes in the programming abilities of the TI-Npsire and TI-Nspire CAS models.

The TI-83/84 Plus series, Voyage 200 and TI-89 Titanium have greater programming capabilities. They do support a full range of I/O commands, hence being the better calculators to suit your needs.

Kind regards,

This all happened today in case you would want to know.
Also because I'm from Belgium, it looks like the guy is too.(He has a dutch name.)
NOTE: I do not have a ti-nspire, but I was thinking I could ever buy one because I heard it has almost the same language as the 68k family.

I just post this in case any of you guys were interested or were expecting TI to make an update 'fixing' that function.
